While true, you don't know if we got the best deal out there.
We do know what FA pitchers signed for, and while the RP'er FA market was not very strong, many decent to very good RP'ers were traded that winter. Some did well: some did not so well.
Pretty much everyone agrees we overpaid, and overpaying is necessary at times, but in my opinion, we overpaid in two ways: money and prospects.
I hated the deal at the time, but I understand why it was made. Since the deal was made, the closer salaries have sky-rocketed, so that aspect does not look so bad, in hindsight.
My opinion of the trade has nothing to do with Kimbrel's somewhat lackluster 2016 season. When we got him, I thought of him as a top 3 closer in MLB and expected top 5 closer going forward. That being said, I thought the "overpay" was too excessive. I still do. In comparison, I thought the Price contract was "overpay" but essential and logical.
I've talked about trading Holt to allow Marco more playing time, but maybe trading an infielder or benching (Pablo) will be his only quicker way to a FT role with the Sox.
I wouldn't be surprised, if we end up trading Marco instead. Sad but possible.
Bogey and Pablo have 3 years of team control and Pedey has 5.
One issue is that Marco's worst non 1B infield position defensively is probably 3B.
Another issue is that Devers is viewed as Pablo's replacement, with Pablo possibly moving to 1B or DH as early as next season.
If Marco or Pablo could play 1B, Marco would be starting game 1. (Maybe Marco's quickest route, without an injury, is for Pablo to play 1B and Marco 1B.)
If Marco could play OF, Holt might have been traded by now.
I hope Marco gets a chance soon, but it looks like the only way he gets a legitimate shot with the Sox is if someone gets hurt or implodes.
Maybe JF will go with this...
(When everyone is healthy)
vs RHPs
2B Pedey
LF Beni
RF Betts
DH Ramirez
CF Bradley
SS Bogaerts
3B Sandy
1B Moreland
C Leon
vs LHPs
2B Pedey
SS Bogey
1B Ramirez
RF Betts
DH Young
LF Beni
CF Bradley
C Leon/Vaz
3B Rutledge/Sandy/Holt/Hernandez
I have always thought that there is a better way to spend money than on relievers. I think Kimbrel will be fine...
I was fine with paying Kimbrel good money or trading top prospects for him but not both.
Pedey might need a day off every 3-4 weeks, at most.
Who would Marco PH for? I just see Leon or Vaz... maybe Moreland.
Marco's best shot at significant playing time is for Pablo to fizzle or an IF'er gets hurt.
He had the team's 7th best OPS the year before he bolted.
The Yanks made a big mistake.
(At the time, I said I wouldn't have paid him half of what the Yanks did.
Okay. The context is different; I agree.
Even if Brantley does not produce, adding EE (with loss of Naps) and the return of Carrasco & Salazar for the playoffs certainly make the Inidans look better than before the series started last fall.
MLBTR...
The Orioles have placed outfielder Aneury Tavarez, one of their two picks in last year’s Rule 5 Draft, on outright waivers, reports Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun. If no team claims Tavarez, the 24-year-old will be offered back to the Red Sox organization, from which he was selected in December.
Any club that claims Tavarez would need to follow the same Rule 5 restrictions facing the Orioles; in other words, Tavarez must be carried on a team’s 25-man roster or else be placed on waivers and, upon clearing, offered back to Boston. Tavarez’s waiver period ends on Friday, according to Meoli. If he ends up back in Boston, the Red Sox are free to option Tavarez back to the minor leagues.
The theory is sound; put your best team on the 25 man roster and deal with depth issues as they come. I don't disagree with the theory, but I think, in this case, we made the right choice.
Pablo is going to play- probably everyday. I'd prefer he platoon, but even with a platoon, I'm not sure Marco is the best choice to play vs LHPs out of Holt, a healthy Rutledge & Marco. So, where does Marco get playing time? Certainly not SS or 2B, and he doesn't play 1B or OF, so I think the choice was right. Besides, keeping depth with players out of options does have value. There may come a point where that value does not outweigh the value of Marco being available everyday off the bench.
I'd love nothing more than for Marco to have a major or significant role on the team. I'm such a big fan of Marco that I'm willing to trade Holt to make it happen.
As of now, I think the best move is to have Marco play everyday in AAA, until he's needed FT or in a more significant role than he'd have right now.
We lost Papi: they gained EE & Brantley, however, we "gain" a whole year of Beni, Pablo, Young, Moreland Leon (Vaz-Swi).
The addition of Chris Sale is "priceless" to me.
I think we both got better.
I still think we are the better team on paper, but it is close.
