  1. I'm not sure Marrero is a plus at 3B, but I do think he's better than anyone else we've tried there this year. Marrero only played 45 innings at 3B on the farm- another example of not getting players ready to play the position we most likely will need them to play. I don't Devon as a 3B solution due to his super weak bat.
  2. I think the argument became upgrading the rotation was a way to minimize the loss of Papi and was supposed to help lessen the need to find a Papi replacement. It is related.
  3. Agreed. I do think Francona's "friendliness" turned into a fault as he let some of his vets get out of hand.
  4. Edwin Encarnacion
  5. I do not think Papi would be a good choice. Managing does involve motivating, but I don't see much energy. Never have with JF, except on walk-offs. I think he has also been overly "loyal" to struggling vets. It has worked sometimes, but has back-fired too many times, IMO..
  6. Once I saw what EE got, that made a lot of sense, however I'm not sure who would have paid Moreland $5.5M. Also, the luxury tax limit will be tight in upcoming years as EE ages and likely declines. His signing might have been great for this year, but if it meant we couldn't keep Bogey or Betts later, then what? Weighing all factors, I'd rather have EE than Moreland, but I'd be worried about future finances even more than I am now (i.e "the cliff").
  7. I'm usually the last to call for a manager's removal, but I have not been a JF fan for a long time. I just don't see any plus traits at all. I've never said to myself, "JF just made a call or decision that won us a game". I hate to go game by game or blame a single person for one loss, but I never feel like JF wins us anything. There are a lot of time I felt he had a hand in a loss.
  8. I agree: he looks better than anything we have now, but I trust the Sox brass to know when "ML ready" is.
  9. I would not have signed Holliday, although he's off to a good start. I liked Beltran, but I think staying under the luxury limit will end up being a critical and good choice. Not signing Moreland and getting someone better was an idea, but Moreland has done well, so It's hard for me to fault DD on this one. Hindsight is 20/20, but let's wait a while before we get too worked up.
  10. Factor in park advantages, and 15th is more like 20th.
  11. Sale has been a huge addition, but instead of helping to make up for the loss of Papi, he's been used to make up for the loss of Price & Wright. Thornburg was supposed to make up for losing Uehara and Ziegler, at least until C Smith returned. I'm not happy with DD's plan, but I still maintain it was not far-fetched to think this team, on paper, was going to be as strong, if not stronger, than last year's team.
  12. Here's a look at our possible options and future at 3B and 1B: 2017 stats: S Travis (98 AB at Paw.) .245 2 6 (.692 OPS) Dominquez (94 AB at Paw.) .223 3 13 (.641) R Devers (105 ABs at Portland) .324 7 20 (.984) Longhi (104 AB at Portland) .269 2 14 (.684) M Chavez (94 AB at Salem) .,330 7 25 (1.076) Ockimey (112 AB at Salem) .313 4 32 (.924) Dalbec (106 AB at Greenville) .264 2 12 (.716)
  13. Things haven't worked out so far, but maybe with the return of Price, we can start playing much better than .500 ball. Of cource, Price alone cannot do it by himself. The offense will have to improve. I do think it wasn't far- fetched to think the addition of Sale, Moreland and Thornburg along with more games from Beni and C Smith, it would be enough to make up for the loss of Papi... on paper, anyways. I still think we should be better than a .500 team, even without Price, Smith, Thornburg & Wright.
  14. I think he felt a full season from Beni, and a platoon of Moreland and Young would be enough. So far, we seem to be lacking, but the season is long, and a few players have yet to warm up. I hope this isn't like 2014 or 2015 where nearly everyone seemed to have an "off year" at the same time. If just JBJ was hitting like 2016, we might not be in such bad shape.
  15. Rutledge looks to be the best option vs LHPs, although Holt has a slightly better OPS vs LHPs than RHPs career, however, I don't think we have anyone in the system who can defend 3B decently, except maybe Devers. I agree with your points.
  16. Yes, and although Guerra's stock has fallen off a cliff, I have to think we could have gotten something worth while for him before he dropped in value. Allen and Asuaje have not fallen in value. Margot still has upside. He's currently ranked 24th by Baseball America.
  17. Good point. Maybe a "handful".
  18. I totally agree, but I've" made my bed" concerning Espi, so I'm sleeping in it. I realize I could be very wrong, but my gut still loves the kid.
  19. I agree, and I didn't mean your "numbers" had to be hard and set. He could be batting .680 with a ton of line-outs and hits robbed by great defensive plays, and I'd give him longer, and certainly his defense has to look better than earlier this season. A lot also depends on Sox management's view on Devers' readiness. I'm not for bringing him up early, if the Sox do not think he's ready for the bigs. I wouldn't mind seeing Hernandez get another shot before Devers as well, but I'm pretty close to convinced that 3B is not a position he will ever master.
  20. What would you say his minimal numbers need to be to go beyond 6 weeks?
  21. Well, he was out hurt for a full season. I get the frustration, and to me, this has nothing to do with his bloated salary. The guy used to be an average to slightly plus defender and a plus batter. I know it seems like ancient history, and I don't disagree that it's been too long since he was a plus. I love the idea of bringing Devers up, but I don't want to rush him either. When I said 5-6 weeks, that's assuming he's doing the worst I'd accept as "a leash": maybe .250/.330/.350/.680 and 2 errors. If that's the best he can give us in 6 weeks, I'm ready for Devers. If he does much worse, the leash gets shorter.
  22. He's been excellent this year. Last year's full season value was $9.8M.
  23. I hated the Pablo signing from the start, but he is not old and he does have a history of being decent or better. By long leash, I'm saying 5-6 weeks, assuming he's not batting .150 and making an error once every 3 games.
  24. Depends on what we would have done with his $13M salary available and who else we might have gotten for Margot and the 3 others traded for Kimbrel. Certainly, in today's RP'er market, $13M is not as bad as it looked at the time of the trade, but it still buys you a lot of pen talent on the open market. I'm glad we have Kimbrel. but he cost a lot. Here's some interesting numbers on pitchers with 16+ IP this year: K/9 17.8 KImbrel 16.4 Devenski 14.5 Knebel 14.0 B Parker 13.1 Salazar 13.0 C Sale
  25. I won't have to. There will be dozens of posters coming out of the woodwork claiming they hated the trade at the time.
