  1. Hanley to DH the Rest of the Year MLBTR by Jeff Todd The Red Sox won’t count on Hanley Ramirez being capable of playing first base again this year, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters including Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. Shoulder troubles have persisted for the veteran, relegating him to DH duties. “The potential negatives of him going out and [playing first], at this point don’t outweigh the positives that we get from having his bat in as our DH,” Dombrowski explained. “We just have to maneuver around it.” For the time being, at least, rookie Sam Travis is up to provide a right-handed-hitting option at first along side lefty Mitch Moreland.
  2. I'm fine with Beni 1st and Bogey 2nd. That was my line-up choice all winter and still is now. I'm okay with them flipped as well. While Bogey may have a better SLG%, he's also better at getting on base by about the same as he's better in slugging.
  3. No issue there. The way Beni has been running into outs, maybe Bogey up first is better. Plus, Beni has shown more power.
  4. 1st or second makes the most sense, at least until that projected power materializes.
  5. I doubt Beni or Betts would complain about this... 1) Beni 2) Bogey 3) Betts 4) HRam 5) Pedey v R/Young v L 6) Moreland v R/ Pedey v L 7) JBJ 8) Leon v R/ Vaz v L 9) Marrero
  6. ...and Bogey shuts me up with his first HR this year!
  7. Will you kick me out of the gang, if I say Bogey should be batting 2nd? (Or at least first not 3rd?)
  8. I agree and said I still think we end up a top 5 scoring team with a good chance to be top 3.
  9. We currently have the MLB's 12th best catcher wRC+ at 94. I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up between 10 and 20. Last year, with Hanigan & Holaday on board, our wRC+ was 79. Many assumed our catcher offense would decline as Sandy "came down to earth", but they neglected to compensate for the loss of H & H and the chance Vaz could improve on 2016.
  10. Just shows how short sample sizes can skew numbers and outlooks.
  11. Sox OPS+ numbers (75+ PAs): 126 Bogey 126 Betts 118 Moreland 112 Vazquez 110 Beni 106 HRam 100 Pedey 100 Young 68 JBJ ERA+ 187 Sale 142 ERod 101 Porcello 89 Pom 485 Kimbrel 275 Kelly 121 Barnes 105 Hembree
  12. Sox are now 13th in runs scored- just 10 runs behind being top 9, 18 runs from top 6 and 25 runs from top 4. Granted, park adjustments should be applied.
  13. Nice to see our 1Bmen (Moreland PH for catcher for 1 PA) go 4 for 6 last night.
  14. Shaw looked good for us this time last year, too. Let's wait and see if he can do it for a prolonged time, before we pass judgment.
  15. 12 Ks in 8 IP tonight (3-4 by Napoli)
  16. Moreland has not done very well vs LHPs over his career. He's also rarely gone over 465 PAs in a season. They may want to start just giving him a breather, so he can "last" all year. I don't expect Travis to stay on the MLB roster, unless HRam never gets well enough to play 1B or Travis wows us.
  17. I want to find out what Travis can do as well, but I'm not sitting one of our best hitters this year (Moreland) or our best hope for a legitimate clean-up hitter going forward (HRam) at this point in the season. I'm not sure I'd have called up Travis just to platoon, but that is what seems to fit best with him RIGHT NOW on the 25 man roster.
  18. If he plays FT, who sits? HRam? Moreland?
  19. How many outs can a team run into in a quarter season?
  20. MLB.com By Quinn Roberts / MLB.com BOSTON -- The Red Sox called up No. 3 prospect Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday with the intention of him starting at first base against left-handers. With a rested bullpen, Red Sox manager John Farrell said it was the right time to have the bench at full strength. To make room for Travis, the team optioned right-hander Hector Velazquez to Triple-A. "He's been swinging well. There is some momentum with Sam," Farrell said. "The fact is, we are probably looking at four left-handed starters over these next four series, so we felt like it was an opportunity to add another right-handed bat...."
  21. From MLBTR... Marco Hernandez To Undergo Shoulder Surgery By Steve Adams | May 23, 2017 at 4:17pm CDT Red Sox infielder Marco Hernandez will undergo surgery to repair his injured left shoulder on Friday and is likely to miss the remainder of the regular season, tweets Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. Hernandez has been on the disabled list due to a left shoulder subluxation since May 4. The 24-year-old Hernandez hasn’t solidified himself as a regular big league contributor to this point in his career, but he’s been a useful utility option for the Sox since making his MLB debut last year. In 61 games and 116 plate appearances, Hernandez has batted .284/.328/.349, and he’s logged time at second base, shortstop and third base in the Majors. [Related: Boston Red Sox depth chart] Hernandez’s season-ending injury further thins out a depleted third base mix for the Sox. In addition to Hernandez, both Brock Holt and Pablo Sandoval are on the disabled list, leaving Deven Marrero and Josh Rutledge to split third base duties for the time being in Boston. Hernandez will now accrue a full year’s worth of Major League service in 2017, and the ability to move him to the 60-day disabled list will give Boston a bit of flexibility with the 40-man roster. As for Boston’s third base alternatives, it doesn’t seem that the 28-year-old Holt is especially close to returning to action; Britton also tweeted that the versatile 28-year-old was removed from his rehab assignment due to the fact that he wouldn’t be ready for activation within the requisite 20-game window. He’s being shut down for another five days as he continues to deal with the aftereffects of a concussion. Sandoval, meanwhile, is on a rehab assignment in Triple-A but is out of the lineup today due to illness, per Britton.
  22. We wouldn't need any. 5 years/$32M (2014-18), plus 2019 club option (only $6.4M off luxury tax budget) $0.5M signing bonus 14:$1M, 15:$3M, 16:$5.75M, 17:$8.75M, 18:$11M, 19:$14.5M club option ($2M buyout)
  23. Trade him for Goldschmidt!
  24. ...so do I.
