  1. Sox leaders in OPS (200+ PAs) .804 Beni .791 Nunez (2 teams combined) .784 Pedey .784 Betts .777 HRam .775 JBJ .756 Moreland .741 Bogey .738 Young .730 Vaz .682 Leon Interesting to note that Betts is in danger of falling to 6th place on his own team! He's only .009 ahead of JBJ and .008 ahead of HRam. 6th out of 11 players! WOW!
  2. Does a 60 day DL guy need to be on the active 40 man roster by September 1st to qualify for the playoff rosters? I know he's on the 40 man roster now, but what's the rule here?
  3. Good point.
  4. I don't disagree, and I understand why management has held off releasing anybody until they NEED to, but with some rule 5 guys needing to be added in November, it's getting close to the time where we need to clear some dead space off the 40 man roster. Yes, Someone has to go to take Smith off the 60 day DL, and if we want to add Brentz, we'll need to drop someone else. Of course, the rule 5 needs are secondary right now, so we need to look at who is on the 40 man roster than may not provide any assets this year, and who does not look to be an asset going forward as well. Some of the players I listed below may be too good to DFA, and we could trade for a prospect not needing to be on the 40 man roster this year or next. Here's a list of possible 40 man roster casualties by September first or by rule 5 time. Henry Owens (add Beeks or Butler) Steve Selsky (add Brentz or Butler) Josh Rutledge (on 60 DL, so does not open a new slot by DFA'ing him) Blaine Boyer? Possible trade (most likely after the season but before rule 5 time): Brock Holt Roenis Elias (1 option) Hembree (out of options and a crowded 2018 bullpen) R Ross (still has 2 options) Kyle Martin (3 options) Hector Velazquez (3) Marrero (1 option)
  5. One major reason to add a third catcher, is that it allows a manager to more freely PH for the starting catcher, although the way Vaz is hitting, we may not want or need to do that too often.
  6. Very well said. It's hard, for some, to handle the long slumps he's had in his career, but when the season is done, he ends up with pretty consistently good offensive numbers to go along with his exceptional defense. Last 3 year's OPS .832 2015 .835 2016 .775 2017 I'm not sure any other Sox player has been within .060 in each of the last 3 years. Inconsistent but consistent offensively. Always great defensively.
  7. Another night where the pen does not allow a run! How can they suck? (LOL)
  8. What's the word on A Miller? Is it something serious?
  9. WOW! Fister- 1 hitter Devers goes 0 for 5 and still has an OPS above 1.000. 4 guys with 2 hits. JBJ and Bogey are showing signs of coming around. 7 guys with a run or an RBI- many pitching in. Bull pen rested. Gotta feel good!
  10. It seems that way, but it will be hard to just make it to the WS through the NL. There's 3 other teams with 68+ wins plus the Cubs. There's no easy first round match-up. Then, they'll have to go through the Sox!
  11. They are not. I mentioned Owens might be DFA'd. Elias wasn't bad in Seattle. He may bounce back from injuries, but I agree, I'm not counting on him for anything. I could see us signing another Fister type, but I doubt we sign a significant SP'er.
  12. Yes, but they'll have to DFA someone (Selsky?) to add Brentz to the 40 man roster. DFA Selsky and add Brentz. I could see 7 or 8... Add to MLB team roster on Sept 1st: Brentz (Assume Velazques stays for Barnes) Lin Marrero Travis Butler or Swihart Carson Smith Boyer Maddox Maybe Beeks or Johnson
  13. A bridge to September 1st call-ups.
  14. Even if Price has Tommy John, we might not try to acquire another starter. Wright Johnson Velazquez Beeks Elias Haley Owens (if he's not DFA'd to make room for a rule 5 player)
  15. Probably right, but his main issues have involved his throwing arm (shoulder). Maybe he can still hit and/or play 1B. Again, I'm not saying I want him.
  16. Andrew Miller and Danny Salazar to the DL. Looks like aren't the only team with pitchers on the DL. David Wright begins a rehab assignment. Is it time for him to move to the AL as a DH? Could he play 1B? Is he an option for the Sox (assuming the Mets take on some of the money)? $20M 2018 $15M 2019 $12M 2020 (I'm not saying I want to take on another high injury player.)
  17. Probably. My question was a bit facetious, especially the "infatuation" choice. We all know he's not playing him because of his offensive or defensive skills. I guess the "playing him, so we can see if he deserves to be DFA'd or not" excuse is about the best I've heard, so far. Maybe there's an unknown reason Young is not being allowed to play more. Nobody on this site knows everything going on behind closed doors, but we give our opinions anyways based on what we know or believe.
  18. 50+ PAs Best Sox OBP .398 Devers .380 Travis .379 Lin .378 Pedey (Only 1 of the top 4 are on the active 25 man roster right now.) .358 Beni .354 Nunez .342 Betts .341 JBJ .337 Bogey .336 HRam .331 Vaz .326 Young .300 Hernandez .297 Leon .297 Rutledge .276 Holt .269 Pablo .258 Marrero SLG .667 Devers .522 Nunez .449 Beni .445 Betts .437 HRam .427 Moreland .422 JBJ .406 Young .406 Pedey .400 Bogey .399 Vaz .395 Travis .380 Leon .379 Lin .354 Pablo .328 Hernandez .318 Marrero .262 Rutledge .218 Holt WRC+ 172 Devers 128 Nunez 109 Travis 107 Beni 107 Pedey 102 Betts 100 Lin 99 HRam 99 JBJ 96 Moreland 91 Young 91 Bogey 90 Vaz 73 Leon 62 Hernandez 58 Pablo 48 Rutledge 45 Marrero 31 Holt 400+ PAs 2016-2017 wRC+ 163 Ortiz 121 Betts 116 Pedey 115 HRam 110 JBJ 110 Beni 108 Young 104 Bogey 101 Leon 96 Moreland 87 Shaw 79 Hernandez 74 Vaz 74 Holt
  19. What a difference between the AL and NL. The AL Wildcard is wide open. Although the Yanks are 2.5 games up, there are 8 teams within 5 games of the last slot! That's only 3 teams essentially out of it right now. There's 5 teams with 2 games: - MN -.5 LAA -1.0 SEA -1.5 KCR -2.0 TEX All division leaders are up by 4.5 of more. The Sox are just 5 behind the Astros for the best record in the AL. The NL has 2 divisions locked up, but the NL Central is still in play: - Cubs -2.5 MIL -3.5 StL Milwaukee and St. Louis are farther behind the WC than the division: +0.5 COL --- AZ -3.5 MIL -4.5 StL (The Cubs would not make the WC with their current record.)
  20. Good point, but there are so many players who will obviously not be on the 40 man roster next year that we can DFA before Sept 1st. DFA Selsky and add Brentz. DFA Owens or Kyle Martin and add Butler or Barfield. Maybe DFA Boyer and add Beeks. We'll need to protect Beeks in rule 5 anyways.
  21. If Moreland aand HRam are both unable to play 1B, then maybe Travis needs to be called up. Lin can probably wait until Sept 1st.
  22. I think they know what Holt can do. I guess they may have wanted to see, if he was over the effects of his health issues. That's a fair point, especially with Pedey's playing time at 2B in doubt. I just think it is Young who needs playing time. He's a lefty-killer normally, and needs to find his stride. With out OF locked in, any time an OF'er rests or a DH is needed, I feel it should be Young- not Holt.
