I totally agree, and if you look at all the moves, signings and draft picks starting after the Nomar trade back in 2004, one could argue it looked like a net negative on paper (not win-loss records- just how his deals worked out). That was a long period of time.

Yes, in hindsight the trade looks awful, and ultimately- right or wrong- GMs are judged in hindsight. Yes, he has take several risks, especially with trading away so many prospects and signing Price to a 7 year deal. I'm hopeful Thornburg can give us some plus next year.

You're looking at the 2017 Shaw not the 2016 Shaw. You ignore Shaw's history: 7 of his previous 12 half-seasons were sub par.

That looks like a possibility, but if the plan is to play JD in LF, I'd trade JBJ for a pitcher and sign Santana or maybe Morrison or Duda to play 1B or DH.

The sample size of Sale with Vaz was tiny. The numbers on Porcello are mixed over 2016 and 2017, but yes, Leon had better numbers. (Again, some sample sizes were small.)

Shaw and others were not "given away for free." We got Thornburg in return. His injury was unfortunate but not foreseeable. His 2.0 WAR in 2016 was the 12th best among all MLB RP'ers. (Kimbrel was 31st at 1.2) Thornburg also had a better xFIP than Kimbel in 2016. His 0.94 WHIP was 14th best in MLN.

He's got 3 years of arb salaries left. There's no need to trade him now, unless we are looking to sign JD Martinez, and JD does not want to DH.

Trading anything for machado makes little sense, unless he agrees to an extension as part of the deal.

Agreed, assuming all of this is accurate. What an awful thing to happen- just at a time when we were really counting on Steven. I hope his wife is okay.

Maybe a three-way trade involving JBJ, but again, I'd rather sign JD and Santana, and if we are going to trade JBJ, get a pitcher for him.
