  1. 2 more "killer bees?"
  2. I'm wondering what Sox prospects might make the top 100 this spring. Groome might be top 50 or 60. Chavis might squeak in the top 90. Mata and Houck might be long shots.
  3. They traded away the other top 20's.
  4. Yes, but if the field was larger, it's been a very well kept secret. Usually, teams don't hide the fact that they are interested or involved in negotiations. There could be 5 teams; there could be two teams; there could just be one with an offer much higher than anyone else, even if much higher is just $100M/5.
  5. Maybe not "pointless", if $100M ends up being close to the top offer.
  6. There might not even be a "field".
  7. However, if nobody bids more, we might make out like bandits. I was thinking $125M/5 might be the top offer, but if $100M/5 is the top offer right now, but someone else comes along with a better offer, we could offer $125M/6 or something like $105M/5 with an option for year 6 at $20M with a $5M buyout- making it $110M/5 or $125M/6 (club choice).
  8. I think we are used to seeing major signings by now, so the frustration level is getting high. For some reason, this off season is going very slow. I'm starting to lose my strong desire to sign JD, but until the big shows begin to drop, I'm fine with waiting it out. I just don't want us to lose out on our plan B and C before getting shut out of plan A.
  9. I'm not sure we will see much input from any prospects this year. If we do, it will likely be because of a major injury or struggle.
  10. Chavis or Brentz? Sam Travis could get a long look, if Moreland/HRam struggle or get hurt. Hernandez, Lin, Marrero, Quiroz at 2B. Velazquez, Johnson, Beeks, Shawaryn at SP'er. Is Maddox still considered a rookie?
  11. Health is going to be a big factor. With Pedey, ERod & Thornburg out to start the season, we can't afford much more.
  12. Yes. I just don't see another taker for JD. I'm worried that Darvish and Arietta sign, and then what are our options beyong JD? Cobb/Lynn and Morrison/Duda?
  13. I can't imagine the D-backs topping $125M/5. I'm wondering if the Sox offer is for even less than that.
  14. I'm a Bucks fan, so Jo Jo had a role in dashing my dreams, but the guy was a true pro. Solid player.
  15. If players start signing in a flurry, DD better not let plan B escape and be forced to overpay for what's left (JD?).
  16. Surely, if we can afford JD, we can afford a solid pitcher and someone like Duda. Morrison might be a bit too expensive, depending on which pitcher we get, but it looks like we could get Darvish & Duda or Cobb (or Lynn) & Morrison for what it appears JD might get. Doing this might also allow us to trade ERod mid season, if our rotation looks healthy and we have a big need somewhere (2B? Clean-up?)
  17. Since nobody is signing, I'm not sure if DD is being patient or just playing the game everyone is playing right now.
  18. Good one. I've been high on JD for a long time, but I'm cooling off some. I'd be okay with a solid pitcher plus Duda or Morrison, instead. I can't see us doing nothing significant. We chose last year to reset the tax, so we could spend this year (and beyond). It wouldn't make sense to stand pat.
  19. Yes--went back and edited.
  20. From soxprospects.com http://news.soxprospects.com/2018/01/fallwinter-league-roundup-castillo.html Rusney Castillo went 8 for 21 over six games, with two home runs, a double, and one walk to go along with two hit-by-pitches. Hector Velazquez In the first game of the semi-finals, he got the win for Navojoa. He was able to limit the damage to only one unearned run despite allowing eight hits over five innings while striking out only two.
  21. Apparently, they had a 1,000 acre farm.
  22. I found this... Forbes cites Henry’s source of wealth as “self-made,” and it couldn’t be more accurate. Growing up in both the green plains of Illinois and the brush land of Arkansas before relocating to California in his teens. Growing, he always had a knack for numbers and a love for baseball, but despite this his future in sports investment wasn’t fully realized until the 1970’s, after his father’s death. Suddenly in charge of the farm and its sales, and began to self-teach himself hedging and trading tactics. By the early ’80’s, Henry began the John W. Henry & Co, a financial trading firm where he could bring his knowledge and expertise to paying clients.
  23. Say we end up signing JD. The Pirates are in rebuild mode. How about... Trade: Holt ($2.2M and 1 arb left), Brentz (out of options), Hembree (out of options and 3 arbs after this year) and Beeks for Josh Harrison [18:$10M, 19:$10.5M club option ($1M buyout), 20:$11.5M club option ($0.5M buyout)] and $3M cash
  24. Ockimey is probably a little high there. If he's going to be an impact bat, he needs to take a big jump this year. He did have an .820 OPS between A+ and AA ball last year at age 21. His power numbers were low (14 HRs & 43 EBH in 452 ABs), but I don't think he needs to make a big jump this year. He's got 2-3 years to get ML ready. He still is a bit "raw", but to me that can mean his ceiling is high, if he can ever refine himself. His K rate is way too high, but with a .385 OBP, ipt may not be that big of an issue.
  25. Did you know Sean Cleary & Steve Boyd? They are good friends of mine that lived in Flanner for a couple years before moving off campus.
