The sample size was 3.3 years. He sucked for about 2.3 of them. (3 negative WAR years and one 3.0 WAR year) Stat w LAD w BOS BA .299 .260 OBP .368 .326 SLG .506 .450 OPS .874 .776 OPS+ 144 102 We got the guy to hit, and an OPS+ of 102 was not any where near what we expected. DFA'ing a player who comes up that short is certainly a reasonable thing to do.

Nobody is going to pay HRam a significant salary. We may get more relief than we did for Pablo, but probably no more than a 2-4 million or so. If you add that to the $2-3M we already have, I guess it might allow us to trade for 2 mid range salary guys (pro-rated) or one high salary guy (pro-rated).

Yes, it has changed the game, so did changing the mound height, how RP'ers are used, dead balls/live balls, the DH, and more. They used the shift against Ted Williams. I'm not saying I like the shift or that it hasn't changed the game, but I think changing the rules of the game so drastically is not warranted.

The shift has nothing to do with the further unbalancing of the league into good and bad teams. The game has always changed. Many earlier changes were much more radical than the shift.

I'm not missing that point. That point was based on him playing well in April and amassing enough PAs to "be on pace" to vest. That may be a point they use in a possible grievance, but HRam was playing himself into a benching and a no vest. 18 crappy games is significant enough to warrant a benching or DFA, Asking a team to bench a guy that was slated to be a back-up DH just so a grievance will not be filed is ludicrous. Moreland's hot start was a factor, because it basically relegated HRam to a DH role that was taken by JD. There literally was no place to play him, so the DFA was well founded and can be supported with a lot of evidence. Yes, HRam has some points on his side, duely noted, but IMO, he's not even close to winning a grievance. I believe that so firmly, I doubt one will even be filed.

Usually, the first step is a demotion in the line-up and then a benching with perhaps a later look-see. Jumping from batting 2nd or 3rd to DFA seems strange. I still think the DFA was justified. He's given us nothing for 3 of his 4 years here. We gave him all the chances he could ask for. One could easily argue he hadn't won a FT job to start the season to begin with. Cora gave him the chance. He started off like he was going to claim the job for himself, despite Moreland and JD's great starts, but his last 18 games sealed his fate. The fact that Moreland and JD were both over 1.000 at the time of the DFA, makes the release grievance-proof in my book

Excellent point, S5. It's too early to make a definitive call on where we need an upgrade. We only have $2-3M left to spend, and precious few prospects, so we may be up for one significant acquisition. We better be sure we chose the right slot to upgrade and the right player to fill our needs.

I doubt they'd win the grievance. The one thing in their favor is the fact that Cora had HRam batting 2nd or 3rd right up to his release, Moreland & JDM hitting over 1.000 helps the Sox. HRam sucking 3 of the last 4 years is the clincher. Sox win any grievance.

I've always felt like trying to improve your weakest link, even if it is not necessarily weak, is the best way to improve your team I do not think catcher is our weakest position. I do not think CF is our weakest position. Just because the first 8 weeks has seen weak offense from those two slots does not mean we need to upgrade at either of those positions. I actually think 2B has been our wekest position, so far due to awful defense AND weak hitting. The catcher and CF positions (along with RF) have carried our defense to respectability. Maybe by the time the trade deadlin is here, I'll be fed up with JBJ and Leon, but it's too early yet, and Leon andJBj seem to be heating up a little bit, so there's no rush at this point. If I had to guess, I think we'll trade for a RP'er, SP'er or a hitter who kills lefties.

It also just seems wrong to change the rule, to me. Players should be able to stand anywhere they want. If a batter can't hit it to a wide open spot on the field, then so be it. I know it's frustrating to see a Sox player rip a line drive right at a "misplaced" fielder, but I think we noticed it more, because we were kind of late on applying the shift on opposing teams.

Personally, I'd prefer 5 IP and 2 ER over 6 IP and 3 ER as "quality," but the taxing of the pen is a killer, at times. Maybe a QS should be this: 5+ IP 2 ER 7+ IP 3 ER 9+ IP 4 ER This would take away the 6 IP 3 ER QS as well as 6.1 and 6.3 with 3 ERs.
