    The Red Sox announced a variety of signings, including that of second-rounder Nick Decker. A New Jersey high-school outfielder who was slated to attend the University of Maryland, Decker will instead take home a $1.25MM bonus to join the Boston organization, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe (via Twitter). That payday lands just north of the $1,010,500 allocation for the 64th overall pick. Decker drew a variety of grades entering the draft, with Fangraphs placing him just on the cusp of its top fifty. While the jury is out on Decker’s pure hitting ability, scouts love his present-day physical ability and big power at the plate. -MLBTR

    Bogey, too. He's up to about .850 again. Betts, Bogey, Beni and JD might be all we need on offense. I hope other can up their game, but we have as solid a 4 as anyone else.

    I'm happy with the team, as is. It would be nice if we had a little more to spend or a few more prospects to trade without totally screwing the future, but it is what it is. Big contract failures, injuries to Pedey, Pom, Smith, Thornburg and others and maybe a little bad luck have put us where we are today. We're still a top 3 team in MLB by record. We're not as bad as we have looked recently. We're not a 17-2 team either, but I firmly believe this team will hit its stride again, and maybe have another rough patch here and there along the way, but come playoff time, we'll be a strong contender. That's all I really care about in terms of this year.

    We spent $8M on Nunez as a remedy for the Pedey situation. DD already addressed the 2B position, and he used up just about every scrap or resources we had to build the current roster. I'm not arguing that 2B may or may not be our weakest position, but I think we are going to sink or swim with Nunez/Holt (Lin/Marco). By the deadline, we'll know more about Pedey, and if Nunez/Holt are still not getting it done, perhaps 2B is where we look to upgrade, but by then, maybe another position looks like it is a higher need. We only have a few precious resources left and can't fill all our needs. My guess is that we wait it out and make our decision near the end of July.

    He played in 44 games with us and got 177 PAs. If he played in all 87 games (highly unlikely even if "fulltime"), he get about 350 PAs. Yes, that would put him over, but in reality, I'm looking at these aspects: 1) He'd have to take a few games in AAA to get back into form. 2) He reportedly rehabbing an injury as we speak. 3) When he gave us those 44 games, it was over our first 50 games. That's 88%. Even if he was signed and added to the ML roster today, and played at the same rate as pre-DFA, he'd only play in about 76 games. In reality, it might be more like 70 tops. At 4.43 PAs per game (pre-DFA rate), he's get about 310 PAs. At less than 68 games played, he'd be under. In reality, you are right. If he started tomorrow and played at his previous rate, he vest by a few PAs. Anyways, it's not happening.

    At this point, we could bring him back as a FT'er and he still wouldn't vest.

    DD did a lot beforehand to get Cora the tools he needs. The problem is, he pretty much shot his wad totally. The max luxury line might be higher priority than getting some instant offense via trade, but maybe it isn't. The draft penalty is not all that bad.

    To me, too many people assume that what a player has done for a few weeks is what they will continue to do. I'm not saying Lowrie won't continue to blow Nunez/Holt away, but I certainly think the gap closing will be a strong possibility this summer. Lowrie is too weak vs lefties for me to jump on his bandwagon just yet. Maybe in 5 weeks my mind will be changed.

    At .180, I'm not sure about (big) raises.

    Slight upgrade at too much cost, IMO. Holt should not have to play much, so maybe he won't wear down. Plus, he got all buffed up this winter. I'm not sure a Nunez/Holt combo at 2B is our biggest weakness. Maybe I'm just wishful thinking on Nunez regaining form or Holt breaking the cycle.

    Totally agree. He won't be harmed in any way by going through some growing pains.

    Lowrie might cost too much for what we get, and he doesn't solve the line-up issue vs LHPs.
