  1. Makes ours look like the Yankees...
  2. Even if JD gets no credit for "protection" or coaching others to do better than they otherwise would have done, his offense has greatly improved our offense from what it would have been with HRam, Swihart and Nunez as our DH all year.
  3. Great to see the Yanks lose to the Rays (again). I guess we wore the Phillies out as they lost to the Mets by 20 runs! WOW! Here's how many times the top 8 slots got on base vs Philly today: 4 3 3 3 3 5 4 6
  4. I always wondered why they didn't list this as an important stat.
  5. He was banking on Smith or Thornburg to be capable "additions" and probably felt the SP'ers who did not make the rotation could bolster the pen. Our pen still ranks 5th out of 30 this year. Sure it would be nice to be #1 at every position, but we're up against the max penalty on taxes for spending way more than anyone else. We're 50 games over .500, and DD is being criticized for not making us the 2nd or 3rd best pen in MLB. Hmmm.....
  6. I don't understand how WAA works, so it must suck.
  7. Agree. I have 2B ahead of 3B or 1B (hitter who can hit LHP'ers). I see Devers as a starter somewhere next year: 1B, 3B or DH.
  8. Can anyone really say, with a straight face, our pen is doing worse than we expected? Same with last year. We have Kimbrel and then a bunch of hopes and prayers, but somehow, Leon & Vaz have gotten our pen to be ranked 2ns in Pen WAR from 2017-2018. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 Our catchers should be praised for getting the most they can from our RP'ers, even though lately, it has looked horrific.
  9. Maybe because there's less time working with them? Seriously though, our pen has over performed for just about 2 years in a row from what they look like on paper. I'd argue Leon & Vaz have gotten the best possible out of most RP'ers, too.
  10. I doubt that was Leon's strategy.
  11. Our pen could get some big boosts from SP'ers being moved to the pen for the playoffs. I'm hopeful ERod and Wright can get sharp before October. That would allow us to move 2-3 starters to the pen.
  12. I was saying that last winter (see my sign Moose rants), but I was okay with giving him time to try and prove he can improve at 3B. I haven't seen improvement, so far. This winter might be a good time to shop for a 3Bman and move Devers to 1B, assuming he begins to hit well again.
  13. Me, too. His throwing accuracy seems to be worse, or at best, the same. His range seems good and probably even a plus. He still has a long way to go, and it is worrisome that he has to learn in a super pressure packed season like this one. That being said, I still think he's a better option than Holt or Nunez. Neither of them can field 3B very well either.
  14. I totally agree with #1, but think JD probably helped them improve even more than they would have without him. I'm not big on the "protection" argument, but I do think hot hitting is often contagious or rubs off on other players.
  15. Almost exactly like my list. My #4 was a batter who hits lefty, and 1B makes the most sense to find that guy. Moreland has played hurt two years in a row now, and we need to start planning on that happening next year, too. I'm thinking a one year solution might be best in hopes that Dalbec, Chavis or Ockimey prove they belong (maybe).
  16. Just because the margin or error may be 17% does not mean anyone with 17% of another is the same. If WAR has a player listed as 0.4 and another at 0.5, my guess is the second one is having a better season (or career) than the first one in a pretty significant majority of the time. The 17% margin you speak of works better when you compare a 6.1 player to a 6.3 player, since both fall within the 17% range, but a 0.4 and 0.5 player are not within 17% of each other, even though they are closer to each other in terms of raw number differential. The 0.4 player is 20% worse than the 0.5 player.
  17. To me, that's really where WAR is most serviceable. I don't watch more than a handful of games a year that the Sox are not one of the teams playing. That means I never watch some teams play. I only watch some teams for 3 games and others for 6. It's hard to know anything about other players except through stats, and WAR gives one number that tries to capture just about all aspects of what gives a player value: hitting, power, defense and base running. It saves me from having to look at ech player's BA, OBP, SLG, UZR/150, DRS, Running indexes and more and then compare 12 stats to dozens of other players to try and figure out if the guy I never see play is average, above average or worse than others. It's not perfect, but it turns a complicated task into an easier one, for me, even though I don't take WAR as the gospel.
  18. Well put. I will add that had we not signed JD, I'm pretty sure DD would have signed someone else. many of the other choices have been duds, but had he signed someone else that is doing well, maybe the loss of JD might not have been as bad as some think it might have been. I'm sure glad we signed him, and I loved the signing at the time. I do believe he has helped others do better this year than had he not been here. I'm not sure by how much, but I am pretty certain he has helped.
  19. So, how would you rank our off season priorities?
  20. If you threw your best pitch everytime there was two strikes, the batter would know what's coming and gain the advantage. Mixing it up is needed to keep batters off balance and hopefully, guessing wrongly.
  21. No stats came close to capturing everything, so yes, all stats were and still are bad, in the sense that none are very close to being perfect. WAR is an attempt to do better than what we had before. It's not perfect. It's not close to perfect, but in my opinion, it's closer to perfect than it is to the next closest single stat- for what that is worth.
  22. Exactly. Probably just about everyone (except Vaz) would have been doing better without JD, but he surely has helped some (maybe most) do better than if he wasn't here.
  23. GG quality RF'ers who play Fenway like they were born there are very hard to find. Why mess with a great thing? To me, it's harder to find a top RF'er than 2Bman.
