Wright has another knee surgery

Some of Wright's injuries were not arm related, and while the knee is very important to a pitcher, it might be better than arm problems. Depending on how extensive the surgery was, I'm hopeful Wright can help us next year. -
True. He's done pretty well on all deals, big and small.

No, he wasn't, and that's why they found other catchers to be Wake's caddy after 2000, and VTek went on to become one of the best defensive catchers I have ever seen, despite a weak throwing arm.

Not the two years VTek led the league in PBs. Mirabelli wasn't even on the team. 1999 Wake had these PAs against with these catchers: 579 with VTek 56 others 2000 495 w VTek 211 w Hatteberg

He's actually done better with his non-splash deals: Eovaldi, Pearce, Brasier, and last year's Nunez, Fister & Boyer. He rarely misses on these choices.

While I agree, it may be presumptuous to expect his "boom or bust" players to have risen quickly at this point in their careers. The problem is, we will need some sort of youth infusion by 2020 or 2021 at the latest, and nobody really jumps out as being that guy. Sure, we have guys like Feltman and Groome, but they seem like long shots. We could have used a nice rookie for 2019 as well, maybe a 1Bman, 2Bman, 4th OF'er, pen arm, 5th starter...

I don't see the Yanks getting Machado. He wants to play SS, and the Phillies have gobs of cash. I think the Yanks get Harper and pitching.

I will note for the record that being the American League's Passed Ball King for 2 years straight, including a year when you only half-time it at catcher and STILL pass more baseballs than you did in a full year of catching the previous year, is rather discouraging to say the least. An interesting tidbit: Jason Varitek also led the league in passed balls for 2 straight seasons, thanks in part to catching (or trying to) Wakefield's knuckler.

Lost in all the noise is the fact that we'd been in a drafting slump under Cherington for years BEFORFE DD ever got here. Theo had not drafted well in his last few years, and I'm honestly not certain if we have any decent Cherington draft picks in system outside of maybe Devers (was JBJ a Cherington guy? Unsure. Ben drafted or signed as Int'l FAs: Beni, Devers, Johnson, Moncada, Kopech & Basabe (who helped get Sale), A Espinoza (who got us Pom), Chavis (our current top prospect), Guerra (part of Kimbrel trade) and D Hernandez (maybe the top sleeper in our farm). Farm building was not Ben's weakness. Top FA signings were.

It works great for Pearce, since he may be lucky to get $16M/2 or $20M/3. I'm not sure we want $8M on the luxury tax budget for 2021, when we'll be pinching pennies everywhere to try and keep Betts.

Pearce might view 2018 as the best he can do, and this is the time to max out on his biggest contract dream amount possible.

I don't think Swihart's bat will ever be good enough to play the long side of a 1B platoon. Chavis might deserve a look, and if he doesn't work, then try to trade for next year's Steve Pearce.

Voit will get a look, as will Byrd, but if Andujar doesn't improve his 3B skills, he might be the best bet to be the Yanks 1Bman of the future.

Injuries and PED suspensions. Groome is the best of our prospects to get hurt. Chavis was suspended for PEDs. Casas & Flores are just 18 Mata is just 19 Dalbec & Darwinzon Hernandez showed some promise, but I'm not sure they will ever crack anyone's top 50 MLB prospect list. Feltman has been talked up by some. Houck and Chatham seem like longshots. We are going to need some major strides by some of these guys to move up in the rankings and have some hope for some help from the farm.

Oh, I know why, My point was more directed at those that felt we'd rebuild the farm in a short time, even though doing so has gotten a lot more difficult for perennial winning, high-spending teams like the Sox. Last graduated top prospects: Devers Beni ERod Swihart Last traded top prospects (after start of 2017 season): Jalen Beeks (Eovaldi) Ty Buttrey (Kinsler) Shaun Anderson (Nunez) Not exactly on the level of Moncada, Kopech, Margot, Espinoza, Dubon, Basabe & others, but a pretty good haul in return, right?

Add to that is the fact that we didn't just lose anyone to graduation. True, Devers is young and was in the minors not too long ago. Same with Beni, but many teams have a weak farm do to recent graduations- not us.

We can afford Pearce, if we can find someone to take Moreland and pay his contract ($5.5M x 1). 2016-2018 vs RHP .789 Pearce (597 PAs) .755 Moreland (1248 PAs) vs LHPs .908 Pearce (314 PAs) .725 Moreland (290) Chavis could provide a platoon, if needed, or we could try to get JD to play 1B some. (Ockimey bats LH'd.)

IDK, it was your point to defend. Clearly, Pearce was signed to platoon, but he did pretty good vs righties. That may have played into more playing time- not just injuries to Moreland.

Do teams really promise a guy like Pearce he will be guaranteed a FT position? Now, that's not to say, he and his agent might look at team rosters and determine what place he should play more often, but this is likely his last big contract, so he is probably not looking for someone to assure him 150 starts, so he can put up a big year and get a bigger contract later. I'm not saying he doesn't want to play everyday, but players who are looking for that (contractually) are usually doing so to increase future contract value. They sign one year deals. Pearce is probably going to sign with the highest bidder, unless the numbers are close. If someone goes 3 years, we probably can't compete. I'd love to have him back, but even if we do re-sign him, it's not lock he keeps doing very well with us as he ages out.

Does anyone still think our farm will replenish itself by magic or something? I've heard for 2 years, we'd build it back up. It's not easy, these days. The system ain't what it used to be. Winning doesn't help. Limited international budgets don't help. We will need farm infusions starting in 2020 or 2021 at the latest. I can't see where that's coming from. I'm okay with the situation, because we won a ring by trading away a lot of highly ranked/rated prospects. DD got some top talent in most of the deals. I will say, I wasn't expecting a 29th ranking, especially since nobody great just graduated this year.

I want Eovaldi back, too, but he's older than Sale and Porcello and will be aging more when they reach free agency. A 4 year deal for him may really bite us in 2021.
