  1. Of course, an injury can change everything. That's understood with anyone's choices.
  2. I want 11 pitchers, but we might only need and use 9 or 10. With 5 days off before game 1 and 2 days off within the 5 game series, we don't need 12 pitchers. We will have Wright and either Eovaldi or ERod as long men, so we don't need all these mediocre 1 inning guys. Wright and ERod/Eovaldi can both go at least 2-3 innings twice in the 5 game series. That will lessen the need for set-up men by a lot.
  3. They may use him in a 10-0 game, but I'd DFA his ass, now!
  4. There are countless examples of managers using starters in long relief once the playoffs arise. yes, except for Andrew Miller and wade davis, you rarely see a manager use a RP for multiple innings several times in one series, but it does happen.
  5. He has been a starter much of his career. It's not like we need to "stretch him out". I realize he is not Wakefield. He throws harder than Wake did. Did you know that in 2015, he was used like this... June 4: 6 IP June 7: 3.1 IP June 11: 2.2 IP June 14: 2 IP June 19: 1 IP June 20: 0.2 IP From 6/4 to 6.11 (8 days- the 5 game playoffs are in 7 days), he pitched 6 IP, 3.1 IP and 2.2 IP.
  6. If I misunderstood your point, I'm sorry, but I will say it again, no decision should ever be made based on a 1 game result (maybe 2 for a RP'er who pitches twice in a 3 game series). I can see, if a manager as 50-50 on the last 2 players for 1 slot remaining using the most recent sample size to "flip the coin", so to speak, but I doubt there are many exact 50-50 choices managers have to make. They watch our players all year, not just in games, but in practice, too, and they generally know who is the better choice, and no one great or bad game changes that. That's my opinion. I don't view it as a "spin."
  7. True, and we'll need this more and more as the next seasons approach. Signing a FA catcher or trading for one will take away from what we can do at high need areas. Our catching position is NOT a need area at all. Yes, I'd like more offense from our catchers, but offense is so far down on the list of what is the most valuable skills a good catcher needs.
  8. Lin is not in. We will never need to us Nunez, Holt and Lin in a game. We won't sub for Bogey. I doubt we ever PH form Kinsler. That leaves just 3B, where we will PH for Devers or Nunez when they switch pitchers to the opposite hand. We won't do that 3 times in any given game. We need to PH for our catchers more than anything else, IMO.
  9. I'm thrilled he thinks this way. Hoping or thinking pitchers only do as well going forward as their last 1-2 games results is not a winning strategy. Thankfully, managers and GMs take longer views than many of us do.
  10. I was thinking that implied 3-4 IP 2 times or 2-3 IP 3 times, not 4 IP 3 times, even though that could be assumed the way I worded it. If he can give us a 38 pitch 3 inning outing like his last game, I could see him doing that 3 times, but that is pushing the limits. We're talking the playoffs, though. I recall bringing Pedro in a game in relief to go several innings, because we needed it.
  11. If you put Swihart on the team, you take either Workman or Moreland off, Honestly I value those two players above Swihart's current level of play, although he is worth keeping around to see if he can take another step forward next season. With 5 days off before game 1 of the playoffs and then a play 2- 1 off, play 2, 1 off, play 1 format, we don't need 12 pitchers. We can use each RP'er 3-4 and maybe even 5 times, if needed for 1 IP. Those who go 2-3 IP can go 2-3 times in this 5 game series format. If needed, we can also use a starter in game 5. IMO, with such weak hitting catchers, having a 3rd catcher makes more sense than having Velazquez (or Workman) as our 12th pitcher.
  12. I totally disagree. All pitchers have games where they just don't have it. Wright has no more of these than others, and in fact, he has less. One thing in his favor, I believe we can know sooner whether Wright "has it" or not and yank him earlier than other types of pitchers.
  13. Wright would have come back as a starter, if we needed him. He actually started this season as a starter. I think you are over-blowing his injury history and his current level of fragility. Wright is certainly a top 3 RP'er right now, since Barnes is still recovering from an injury. Immediately after returning from this year's injury he gave us: Day 1: 1 IP Day 2: 1 IP Day 7: 2 IP From Sept 12-16, he gave us this: Day 1: 1 IP Day 3: 1 IP Day 5: 1 IP He just gave us 3 IP on Sept 20th. It looks like they are working up his IP slowly. He only had 38 IP in that 3 IP game. he had 23, 24 and 30 in three of his 1 IP games. I do not think giving us 35-45 pitches three times with 2 full days rest between each outing is pushing our luck. Right now, I trust Wright more than any RP'er not named Kimbrel. Brasier has done a fine job, but the sample size is small. (I will not argue with anyone placing Brasier over Wright.)
  14. Where did I say that? My first post said: \ Game 1: Sale 6, Wright 2-3, Kimbrel 0-1 Game 2: Price 7, Brasier 1, Kimbrel 1 Day Off Game 3: Porcello 7, Brasier 1, Kimbrel 1 Game 4: Eovaldi 5, Wright 3-4, Kimbrel 0-1 Game Off Game 5: Sale 7, Brasier 1, Kimbrel 1 I think I may have said "2-4 innings three times" on another thread, but if i did, I wasn't thinking it would be a full 4 IP three times. Anyways, it's more about pitches throw than IP.
  15. I firmly believe our catcher position is one of our great strengths. Hitting is a small fraction of a catcher's value to his team. Plus, I doubt our catchers hit .550 next year, as a whole. Here is our catcher outlook: Leon, Vazquez, Swihart O Hernandez, R Baldwin, Kole Cottam
  16. DFA his ass now!
  17. Our biggest need areas for 2019/2020 and our current players/prospects that can play those positions: 2B: Pedey, Nunez (2019 only), Holt, Hernandez Lin, Quiroz, Netzer, Lozada (Chavis?) 1B: Moreland (2019 only), Swihart, Holt Ockimey, Chavis, Travis, Dalbec, Casas 3B: Devers, Nunez, Holt, Hernandez Chavis, Dalbec, Northcut, D Diaz, Castellanos, Granberg SS: Bogey (2019 only), Hernandez (Holt) Lin, Chatham, A Flores RP: Brasier, Barnes, Workman, Hembree, Thornburg, Smith, Poyner, Scott (SP>RP?: Wright, Johnson, Velazquez) Cuevas, Feltman, Lakins, Walden, Gorst, Haley, Shawaryn, Shepherd
  18. Wright has not had throwing arm issues much in his career. I don't think this is overwork: 5 days off game 1: 2 IP game 2: 0 off day game 3: 2 IP game 4: 0 off day game 5; 2 IP or 5 days off game 1: 3 IP game 2: 0 off day game 3: 0 game 4: 0 or 3 IP off day game 4: 3 or 0 IP
  19. How about an HR, JBJ?
  20. Why not this? 1. Betts RF 2. Beni LF 3. Bogey SS 4. JD DH 5. Devers 3B 6. JBJ CF 7. Holt 1B 8. Kinsler 2B 9. Leon C (w Sale & Price)/Vaz (w Porcello & Eovaldi/ERod)
  21. He did have one more good year at age 33, but you're right. His 1988 season was his best WHIP year at 1.17.
  22. Last year arbs are usually near market value, especially the 4 year arb guys like JBJ. He may make $10M and $15M.
  23. He might make $9M then $12M his next 2 arb years.
  24. Yanks-BAL 2-2 into the 9th. Britton next up for a meltdown.
  25. USC lost again. Maybe my Irish can beat them this time.
