I'm sure some team thinks he's better than their 39th or 40th guy on their roster, but that does not mean they are willing to give up much for him. I'm seeing him more as a throw-in with others to slightly improve the return. Hopefully.

Johnson started just 13 games for us this year and had 60.2 IP'd as a starter. His ERA as a starter was 4.15 (slightly better than as a RP'er but his WHIP was pretty ugly at 1.451. I'm really not so sure he'd win a starting role on even half the teams in MLB, if he puts up those numbers next year. Sure, there are teams with holes in their rotations that he'd have a good shot at making the rotation, but I don't think that number is close to 24. Of the 165 MLB starting pitchers with 60+ IP, Johnson ranked 150th in fWAR (0.2), 146th in xFIP (4.91) and 143rd in WHIP (1.45). If you drop the IP to 30, there were 170 starting pitchers with a higher fWAR than Johnson. 5 starters x 30 teams= 150. I like Johnson and think he can improve, but I'm not seeing what you're seeing.

That's certainly a possibility, but my guess is he will be traded before the rule 5 draft. His value cannot be that high, since everyone knows he can be taken for nothing in the draft. Maybe we trade Swihart, Ockimey and a pitcher for a better pitcher. It has to be a team that has roster room. How many are there?

Here's a write up on Colten Brewer from MLBTR Brewer, a fourth-round pick of the Pirates in 2011, has just 9 2/3 innings of big league experience, all of which came with the Padres in 2018. He was tagged for six earned runs on 15 hits and seven walks with 10 strikeouts in that time, but he was much better in Triple-A El Paso. Despite the hitter-friendly nature of his home environment in Triple-A, Brewer posted a 3.75 ERA with more impressive marks of 11.8 K/9 against 2.8 BB/9 with a 55.8 percent grounder rate in 48 innings of relief. Brewer only recently turned 26 and has two minor league option years remaining, so he’ll give the Red Sox some bullpen depth that can be shuttled back and forth between Boston and Pawtucket next season.

So, we add Chavis, lakins, D Hernandez, D reyes, Josh taylor and newly acquired Colten Brewer. I count 39 roster slots filled. I imagine a FA signing will fill that void. I'm not for trading Vaz or Leon. Our pitchers love them too much. I was just responding to a post about trading Vaz and mentioned i thought it would take more than Vaz to get Colome. I do think there are other catchers out there who know how to handle a staff, but I'm not sure about risking a lengthy learning curve during another championship drive in 2019. If it wss up to me, I keep Vaz & Leon and maybe trade Swihart with prospects for something of value.

I'm not afraid of that rotation at all. You still need a big name like Kluber or Corbin. (Maybe Keuchel, but I'm not high on him.)

I don't think anyone is suggesting just Vaz for Colome. Since Seattle is in rebuild mode, they may take a prospect or two with Vaz. I'm not so down on Vaz anymore. He slumped at the start of the year- both offensively & defensively, but he came on strong just before getting hurt and then struggled to come back until we saw him catching in the playoffs in situations usually reserved for Leon. It won't surprise me, if we trade Vaz, but I think he bounces back next year for whomever he plays for. He's basically had one bad half season out of his last 4.

It was a brilliant move by DD. I loved it at the time and love it more now. They gave HRam his shot. They actually played him more at the start of the year than I thought he deserved. When he slumped, and it appeared his playing time would diminish, Cora rightfully saw a problem with how HRam would probably not handle his new role all that well, but to me, and yes it is only my opinion, if it wasn't for his contract, he'd have been on the team to the end of the season. No Pearce. Probably, no vesting option, as his PAs would have been significantly reduced by Moreland playing against all righties.

Even then, I'd trade someone.

Yes, we have to plan for zero innings from Wright. Pressure is on Johnson & Velazquez. Since Wright is out of options, putting him on the DL will give us a little roster wiggle room in the pen. I seriously doubt Wright is ready by May, let alone April.

We'd have Wade Miley and Travis Shaw. I'm not sure Henry opens the wallet all the way, but he could. I wouldn't be surprised if he only replaces 2 of the big 3 that are leaving (Eovaldi, Kimbrel & Kelly) Johnson, Velazquez or Wright might start the year in a key role (5th starter or key pen role). Barnes, Brasier or Hembree might be expected to move up a notch in the pen, and we could back fill with ... Poyner/Workman/Thornburg/Maddox/Walden/Scott/ others I think we'd be very strong replacing 2 slots and keeping some money for the summer. Look what DD dug up this summer!

Even if Quirox, Marco & Pedey never amount to squat, I'm happy with Holt, Nunez & Lin with maybe Chavis or Swihart as emergency depth. We will not address the 2B issue this winter. We have other priorities.

Nathan certainly showed grit and determination. He was also very impressed by how he was treated by the club after that 18 inning loss. I'd love to have him back. He seems like a real "gamer", even though the sample size is smaller than Price's was when many were calling him a choker/loser. He turns 29 before the season starts and doesn't have a lot of innings on his arm, but two TJ surgeries are concerning, and he'll likely want and find an offer for over 2 years- more likely 4. Not knowing what Henry's tax re-set plans (if any) are, it's hard for me to be all in on bringing him back. I love the guy. I'll never forget what he did for us, when it counted. $60M/4 is a pretty big risk. I'm torn. I can see both sides of this choice. There's not much else out there, in terms of RH'd starters, but we do need pen help more, so it it's either/or, I'm leaning 2 solid pen arms instead.

I have Lin ahead of Hernandez, but If Marco hits like a pitcher, then Lin hits like a pitcher batting off-handed. Minors .716 Marco (.752 AAA) .657 Lin (.742 AAA) BTW, what's up with Lin's splits in the tiny sample size of his ML career? .797 vs RHPs (115 PAs) .401 vs LHPs (just 24 PAs) If the guy can hit just .750 vs RHPs consistently, he could start 100 games for us.

Marco has been a pipe dream for me. I'm not sure why I have clung onto any hope with him. Moreland is a plus defender and does okay vs RHPs. He's not a net negative with his salary, but I'm looking at our tight budget and where we might be able to free up some cash and where we have depth that may not be as big of a drop off as other positions. I'm worried that Pearce cannot play FT and give us over 600 PAs. His recent 4 year OPS vs RHPs is equal to Morekand's, so I dee a glimmer of hope. Let JD learn some 1B, use Swihart, Holt and maybe Chavis as depth, if needed. If DD has an unrestricted budget this year, I'm all for keeping Moreland.
