Yes, and the point was that Castillo's contract might be totally over the max $40M line, and the tax would be massive. Once we put Castillo on the 40 man roster, we can't put the genie back in the bottle, and his contract would count in 2020 as well- plus any taxes we may be ar, if we chose not to re-set after 2019. Adding Castillo would almost certainly mean no re-set after 2019.

I thought the Castillo signing looked good at the time. I didn't like the HRam signing, but I didn't think it would end that badly. I hated the Pablo signing, but never expected a total collapse from day one.

I think the idea was that "putting fans in the seats" would equate to winning more games. The Pablo signing did just the opposite. Looking back, signing Scherzer instead of Pablo & HRam was the best move, but some context is needed. At the time, we needed offense and pitching. The long list of top FA pitchers (like Price) coming onto the market the following year was at least a reason to think of the 2 year plan as build offense one year and pitching the next. Ultimately, the GM gets the blame in hindsight. Porcello and HRam sucked during Ben's last year, then did very well to great DD's first year in control, and we win the division. Much of being a GM is rolling the dice, and Ben deserves the criticism he gets for several bad choices, but he also made some good moves, like Porcello and farm building, even though he was not directly benefited by them. I'm glad we had Theo, Ben and now DD. I'm happy with all 3.

There has been some tendencies of blaming LL for more of the bad deals than the good ones, but I have pretty much put all of the blame and praise on the GM. Whether pushed by LL or not, Ben should never have signed Pablo. The HRam and Castillo deals didn't work out too well, in hindsight. To me, the CC & Beckett dump more than cancelled out those bad signings. He won us a ring and built a strong farm at the same time. The 3 last place finishes sucked, but it was worth it. The 2013 ring and 2018 ring can be directly related to Ben, and that is not meant to take anything away from DD.

Youk clouded their vision. Yes, Rizzo at 1B and Beltre at 3B for many years would have been sweet. We might not have been able to dump Crawford, though.

There's also a buyout after 2019 only: 18:$23.75M, 19:$23.75M, 20:$23.75M, 21:$19.375M, 22:$19.375M may opt out of contract after both 2019 ($2.5M buyout) and 2020 seasons (no buyout)

It certainly looks great, but there are some big question marks. Sale's injury. ERod never pitching a full season. Eovaldi's injury history and never really being great for a full season. Porcello has had some recent off years. Price was called a "choke" and a "waste of a signing" just 2-3 months ago. Here are some past rotations that challenge for #1: Going into 2018, we basically had the same rotation, except for Pom (coming off 17-6 3.32). 2011: Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Wakefield, Buch/Dice-K (They didn't do great that year, but on paper, it looked solid.) 2009: Beckett, Lester, Wake, Buch, Smoltz/Penny/Dice-K 2007: Beckett, Schilling, Dice-K, Wake, Lester/Tavarez 2005: Schilling, Wells, Clement, Wake, Arroyo, W Miller 2004: Pedro, Schilling, Lowe, Wake, Arroyo 1986: Clemens, Hurst, Seaver, Boyd, Nipper/Sellers 1978: Tiant, Eckersley, M Torrez, B Lee, Wtight/Ripley 1977: Tiant, Jenkins, Wise, Cleveland, Lee/Aase 1975: Tiant, Wise, Lee, Moret, Cleveland

Good point. Our reset clock may very well depend on JD's choice, but I also feel he will not get much more than $25M/yr when he opts out, so we could always re-sign him at $26M and keep the same budget another year.

I was ecstatic when we traded Nomar. Losing Clemens sucked, but he quickly showed what a jerk he was, so that softened the blow. Mo began to suck almost immediately after he left, so that lessened that feeling of loss. Once Boggs signed with the Yanks, I could have cared less about him. Losing Beltre sucked, but we did get comp picks JBJ and Swihart as a result. Lester hurt, but here are my top six Sox losses: 1. Fred Lynn 2. Carlton Fisk 3. Rick Burleson 4. Jon Lester 5. If we release Castillo, and someone else takes him at min wage, and he makes their ML roster, are we then taxed on his salary?

I really hoped we had signed Miller after getting ERod for him. In a sense we ended up getting Porcello for Lester, and his deal ends before Lester's. 2015-201i8 13.7 fWAR Lester ($155M/6 including 2 years to go) 11.6 fWAR Porcerllo ($85M/5 years including 1 to go)

I'm glad we have DD, and maybe there will come a day that Ben gets his due.

I wonder what role Ben would have ended up with had he stayed. Certainly, he would not have had the same power as before, but he might not have had as much power stripped away as we seem to think. Remember how the Larry vs Theo and Larry vs Ben debates went on for years.

Certainly, everything DD has done cannot be traced to Ben, but a lot of it had to do with the farm Ben left him. Of course, one could also argue Ben's Pablo, HRam and Castillo signings restricted DD in a major way (and still is).

An opt out makes sense. It gives Betts long term insurance, if he gets hurt or, dare I say, gets worse, but it also lets him re-enter the market if salaries keep going up and up and he keeps doing very well or better. The more you front load it, the better chance he opts out, which might be what some of you guys want anyways...(like with Price).

I'd call it a bad day (LOL). Moreland up 3rd cannot happen. Bogey is on the rise. Devers could be, too. I might even hit Pearce vs a good chunk of righties.

That's fine. I am glad Cora is looking to move Betts to the 2 slot. I wanted him there this year. I'm hopeful Beni will improve vs LHPs, but I'm fine with keeping him up first full time. Cora did use Pearce in the 3rd slot thirteen times last year and in the playoffs, too, I believe, so I'm not really that much more radical than the status quo. I could see Cora doing this... 1.
