  1. MLBTR reports.... Giants To Hire Brian Bannister By Steve Adams | December 4, 2019 at 8:49pm CDT The Giants are set to hire Red Sox vice president of pitching development away to join their own front office, reports Jon Morosi of MLB.com (via Twitter). Bannister’s title with his new organization will be director of pitching, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area tweets. As Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe points out (via Twitter), the new position allows Bannister to live closer to his Bay Area home and spend additional time with his wife and two children.
  2. Blind squirrel. Broken clock.
  3. I know you won't want to hear this, but the numbers back up your and my opinions. Career UZR/150 LF:+1.6 in 3518 innings CF: -3.4in 525 innings Career DRS: LF: +9 CF:-9
  4. Here's a doozy 3-way I just posted on TS: Sox: Pressly, Margot, Marisnik & Myers HOU: JBJ & Walden SDP: Chavis, price, Reddick & $3M (from BOS) We'd then have 4 OF'er, not counting Myers (1B for us) and could trade Betts, if we wanted.
  5. And, Wheeler has a longer and more severe injury history- just not recently. Sale's contract starts in 2020 at age 30. Wheeler will be 29.
  6. I'm hoping for this: Georgia beats LSU close (I don't want Utah, Baylor or OKL to make it.) Wisconsin beats OSU badly Clemson beats Virginia Final Rankings: 1. Clemson 2. Georgia 3. Ohio St 4. LSU That's a nice, but unlikely, playoff schedule. Most likely: 1. OSU 2. LSU 3. Clemson 4. Oklahoma (Utah/Baylor)
  7. Nobody thought we could ever dump Crawford. We could trade Price by paying part of his deal or taking back a lesser salary dump-type player (Price for Myers suggestion). I wouldn't trade Sale. Eovaldi's injury history has not changed much since when we signed him last year, so I think there is a market for him, even if we have to pay some of his contract or take some salary back. Maybe Eovaldi and $2M a year for Reddick and Marisnik, then we trade JBJ & Betts for pitching.
  8. Yes, teams in great need of a SP'er might "overpay" for one of our oft-injured starters in hopes of guessing right.
  9. Well, if we get a good, low-cost ML player or two with 3+ years of team control as part of the return, I can see not including a "top prospect."
  10. Wheeler vs Eovaldi: Last 2 years: Wheeler (378 IP) 23-15 3.65 (107 ERA+, 1.19 WHIP, 3.6 K/BB) Eovaldi (179 IP) 8-8 4.63 (97 ERA+, 1.30 WHIP, 3.1 K/BB) Last 3 years: Wheeler (464 IP) 26-22 3.94 (100 ERA+, 1.27 WHIP, 3.1 K/BB) Eovaldi (179 IP) 8-8 4.63 (97 ERA+, 1.30 WHIP, 3.1 K/BB) Last 5 years: Wheeler (464 IP) 26-22 3.94 (100 ERA+, 1.27 WHIP, 3.1 K/BB) Eovaldi (458 IP) 31-19 4.52 (95 ERA+, 1.35 WHIP, 2.7 K/BB) Even the 5 year numbers are not really close, except for the IP. Still, if Wheeler is worth $118M/5, Eovaldi's deal looks like a bargain.
  11. Wow, $18M/1. No way Porcello gets just $8M/1 as some said he might take.
  12. They have 6 roster slots on the 40 man, and depending on us trading JBJ (or other), we might have a couple more. As for the 26 man roster, I see only 18 sure bets with one being Lin by default. Sale, Price, ERod, Eovaldi, DHern Workman, Barnes, Taylor, Walden Vaz Chavis Lin Bogey Devers Beni JBJ Betts JD That's basically 8 slots open, not counting a likely JBJ trade. Add Hembree, Velazquez & Brasier or some other in-system RP'er, and we still have 5 slots: 1B 2B OF SP Rule 5 guy or another SP'er
  13. I'm not for moving Devers, but I will say this- nothing seems to faze this kid. High pressure situations, going through some bad slumps and having some very difficult stretches in the field- he's bounced back from all of them with an air of superior confidence in himself. I'm not expert on psychology, but if I had to pick one guy on the Sox (other than Betts) who could handle a major position change without it creating issues, it would be Devers. For one who seems to love Devers more than anyone here, you seem to have little faith in his ability to adjust. Maybe I love him more! Lol!
  14. You keep tooting this same horn, and I'm not going to say I know more about injuries than you, but I still think Sale is going to surprise you. He may have to re-invent himself a little bit, but he started to last year, and had his highest K rate ever while pitching with this issue. There is reason for hope, but certainly we Sox fans must be ready for disappointment as well.
  15. I have loved Devers from day 1 in the Gulf league. Yes, I was one who thought he should probably be moved to 1B, but I have always said he should get a chance to prove himself at 3B, first. He is improving a lot, so I am currently not for moving him, and I love the kid. BTW, he's a very good baserunner. He has good instincts on the basepaths, and is twice the runner Beni is- not even counting speed.
  16. I said "It is not the right thing to do" to move Devers to 1B, even if our defense would be improved. Dalbec is rated much higher than "adequate" at 3B, and while Devers greatly improved his defense, last year, and may continue improving, let's not kid ourselves. He started near the worst in MLB and has moved up to adequate or maybe a little better. Again, I'm NOT for moving Devers to 1B, right now, but I do believe, from what I've heard and read, Dalbec is a better defensive 3Bman at this moment in time.
  17. Trading Price for Myers is probably the best way to recoup some of the money and still have some hope on better-than-meager returns. (I'd even throw in Chavis and more, if we can get Margot also.)
  18. I agree, and I probably shouldn't try to speak for Nick. I don't think any of us want to trade Dalbec for a middle pack RP'er. I might trade Chavis for a slightly upper-middle pack RP'er who is dependable or who can give 70+ IP.
  19. notin came up with this one on trade simulator: BOS: Fisher, Gaviglio, Giles LAA: Dalbec TOR: Marsh Here's another he made, but I swapped Dalbec for Chavis: BOS: Hader, Ramos NYM: Houck MIL: Dalbec, Smith, Vazquez
  20. Well said, and if we really want Betts back after trading him, we could tell him that. We could offer him a great deal now, and say, if you don't take it, we may trade you, so we can be better when we bid for you next winter. We want you back. If it's all about money, then we'll have to make the best offer. If it wasn't about the money (unlikely), then we did well by trading him.
  21. I get your point. The 3-way deal makes sense. if we don't want prospects for Betts. In theory, no team trading for 1 year of Betts would want to give up equal ML talent, since they want to win in 2020. They want to give prospects. If we don't want prospects, we find a 3rd team that will take the prospects, since they are in rebuild mode. They give us the ML talent we want and need.
  22. Maybe he meant ML RP'er. In theory he may be worth a top prospect RP'er.
  23. I like Dalbec a lot. I like him more than Chavis. However, I think his greatest value is at 3B, and I think moving Devers to 1B might create issues we shouldn't mess with. Devers at 1B and Dalbec at 3B makes the most sense to me, on paper, but that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I'm not for trading Dalbec because I don't like him or I want to weaken the farm. I'm thinking that trading him (maybe as part of a package) for a higher need area prospect or young player might be the best plan.
  24. I'm glad we were able to keep Osich & Marco and reduce our budget slightly.
  25. Oh, I agree, but our unique situation and the roster being expanded to 26 next year might change the equation enough to make a go at rule 5.
