We did need 2 starts from Houck. I think one was a doubleheader and the other was at the start of the year, when ERod was given a late starting the season. We shouldn't need a 6th starter, unless someone gets hurt or a rainout forces a doubleheader, again.

I see it this way, having a guy that can go 3-4 innings every 3-5 days gives the whole pen a day off, and since all of our starters hardly ever go 7 innings, we don't have to postpone using him every 4 days or so, because someone went 8 innings. Having a guy ready to start and give us maybe 4-5 innings in a start is a big plus. We've gone 7 weeks without anyone missing a start. That could be considered very lucky. We very likely will need at least a spot start here or there, soon- maybe more. If Whitlock comes in the game in the 5th or 6th, preferably starting an inning, he can finish the game, thereby getting some high leverage innings along the way and saving Barnes from pitching back to back.

Agreed. Everyone says tied for 3rd, but really it's both.

You never said what you said, today, about Montgomery. You have not always said only good things, but just days ago you were praising him.

It's actually 3rd and 4th, but we always say the higher of the two. If I asked, who is in 4th place, the answer would not be the O's. Let's see how real our starters are when they face this mighty Jays lineup.

Kike homered twice, yesterday at AAA. Lopez homered, again! Duran went 1 for 3 with a walk and a double. After starting the year 0 for 11, Duran is now 13 for 35 in his last nine games with 25 total bases in that stretch. Marcus Wilson continues doing well by going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.

The Yanks are now tied for 4th place in the ALE with the Rays. The Jays are in second, so the easiest way to put some distance between us and them is by beating them, at least 2 out of 3.

That is for sure, but I think the question is has Cordero's leash been too long based on his skill set and scattered sample sizes of okay numbers? I'd argue it was just about right, and had we had players ready to play, maybe he'd have been sent down to AAA to work out his issues a week or 2 ago. IMO, he deserved a pretty long look. Not having an extra sub on the bench to PH or replace him late in games hurt his image. -
I never said you called him an ace, but it was just days ago you were praising him up and down and finding criteria that made him look much better than our starters.

Andriese is the other "long man," already. I guess it shouldn't be surprising that starters off to a good start would be going 5+ innings almost every start, but to me, the IP numbers are almost as surprising as their ERA+'s. Eovaldi 97 (just dipped below 100) Has gone into the 5th inning in all 9 starts and has given us 5 or more IP in 8 starts. ERod 105 (considerably down from his last few seasons) Has gone 5.0 IP in all 7 starts. Richards 112 (slightly above his career 106 mark) Went just 2 IP in his first start but has gone 4.2 or more in his next 7. Has gone 7 IP, twice. Perez 128 (career tops was 104 in 2020 and 2016) Had two starts with 3.2 IP and 5.0 or more in his other 6. Pivetta 138 (by far his best career ERA+) Went 3.2 IP in one start and 5 or 6 IP in his other 7. (Houck has gone into the 5th inning each of his 2 starts. 4.1 in one.) Total Only 4 starts out of 42 with a starter not going into the 5th inning. 36 out of 42, our SP'ers went 5.0 or more IP!

I don’t care if Brice wins the top set up role! We need someone, quick. With me, I’m not big on thinking a player’s past few games is an indicator of what is to come. That doesn’t mean I don’t think Valdez or Taylor can do well. Both have past seasons of success. I know I’ve been calling most of our pen “sucky”, lately, but many have histories of pitching well for long stretches, so I do think maybe 2-3 end up with overall good seasons this year, but maybe not quite good enough to fill the #2 slot that Ottavino seems to not do well enough to feel safe. I liked Valdez, last year, and Taylor was pretty good a couple years back. Maybe they step it up. Maybe Sawamura or Andriese do. Maybe DHern suddenly finds control. Maybe Whitlock stops being stretched out. Brazier, someday? Houck? Maybe Eovaldi ends up in the pen. Lots of maybes but too few probables.

True, and is not on pace to a career high in pitches thrown. His 4.03 pitches per PA is his lowest in 6 years, and he’s not on pace for a career PA against number, either.i He may end up having a career high in IP but not batters faced or pitches thrown.

What’s gonna happen to our pen, if some of our starters stop giving us 5-6 innings? I think we’ve only had 2-3 starts all year where our starter failed give us close to 5 or 6 IP. I doubt anyone is in trade mode, now, so what do we have for in house solutions?.

I still have total confidence in Barnes, but we need to ease his workload. Avoid back to backs. Avoid 4 or 5 out saves. That’s hard to do when we have no reliable set up men. A huge problem can arise, if some our starters stop giving us 5-6 innings.

Yes, but I don’t think that is why he is on pace for 88+. We probably shouldn’t push our luck on extending our starting pitchers’ IP. We have to hope some steps up.

I hesitate to expect one more inning from our starters, but it’s like playing Russian Roulette with anyone Cora chooses not named Barnes.

We need to start thinking about keeping Barnes to just one inning- not because of today, but because we shouldn’t let him reach 80 IP, this year.

I have no idea who will be available for what little we are going to offer. I’m thinking Chavis and maybe someone like Groome for a decent RPer who is overpaid.
