  1. Exactly, but ERA + and ERA- don’t really make Porcello look much better. One would think over a long career many things like inherited runners allowed to score or not would all even out, but really there are probably significant variances from pitcher to pitcher. To me, the biggest flaws in ERA is with the E. earned runs are often the result of poor fielding that is not called an error. Whether a ball hit is determined to be a hit or an error is also often arbitrary calls made by the scorer. Park difference can make huge differences. That is one reason I look at stats like OPS against which to me is a stat that is a “run prevention indicator.” It’s been shown to have a high correlation to how many runs are scored. Using multiple categories to definitively value a player makes the most sense. Using just ERA, SIERA and ERA+ will not tell the whole story.
  2. His OPS against is pretty bad 7 or 8 games back.
  3. Yes, I know his grip on a slot is tenuous. His last start was not bad, so he'll get one or two more, unless we trade him. I'm okay with moving Houck into the rotation, when needed. I'm not sure now is the time, unless weplace ERod on the IL. Richards and Perez will get 1-2 more starts, minimum.
  4. This looks like a steal for the Sox, but the BTV value is 32.4 to LAA and 28.4to BOS. Downs, Dalbec & Groome for Walsh(1B) & R Iglesias (RP) Jared Walsh .832 OPS (22 HRs & 66 RBI) 4+ yrs of control Raisel Iglesias 3.43 ERA/ 0.918 WHIP (13.5 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9) rental
  5. I'd rather have Dalbec + Cordero/Kike/Marwin
  6. Barlow was a joke. I'd give Dalbec & Potts for Santana & Staumont (Maybe Dalbec & Groome)
  7. I wasn't aware. Thanks. That is not a bad contract.
  8. BTV accepted Ro Hernandez, Groome, Potts & Rosario for Aguilar (1B), Thompson (SP) & Bleier (RP) Jesus Aguilar .791OPS (17 HRs & 71 RBI) Zach Thompson 2.45 ERA/ 1.061 WHIP Richard Bleier 2.82 ERA/o.861 WHIP
  9. My last line was we trade for a RP'er. That's 2 for 2 plus Sale (maybe minus ERod). Gray > Richards
  10. Dalbec has way more value than Santana. I know it sounds whacked, but 2 month rentals don't have much value. Yes, Barlow has a lot of value. I was just being sarcastic. BTV accepts this trade: Dalbec for Santana & Staumont
  11. "Well" to us is mediocre to him. This argument is NOT about Porcello. It's about what some consider "good" and "mediocre."
  12. Downs will not be called up, if he remains near .600.
  13. Maybe Dalbec for Santana & Barlow.
  14. BTV Trade: To BOS: Gibson (SP), Kennedy (RP), N Lowe (1B) To TEX: Downs, Dalbec, Groome, Ro Hernandez
  15. I'd say yes. If Downs keeps struggling, he may never make the bigs.
  16. BTV accepted this trade, and all values came out exactly even: To BOS: Jon Gray & CJ Cron To OAK: Richards, Sawamura & $4M cash (out of $6.4M owed) To COL: Groome, Potts & Guldberg (from OAK) We could then trade for another RP'er.
  17. No, and my idea is to not have him in the rotation unless there is another injury.
  18. Upcoming roster moves (beyond any trades): It looks like Arroyo, Marwin & Santana might be out a while, so there's not much on the farm to bring up. Our 3 man bench is Plawecki, Chavis & Cordero. Theonly position players on the 40 man on the farm are: Arauz Wilson Wong (AA: Ro Hernandez, Potts, Rosario) (We could add Munoz or Ockimey, but I doubt we do.) It is likely we trade for a 1Bman or bench piece. Pitching: IL Sawamura, Andriese, Bazardo & Brasier Rehab: Sale (Seabold) Replace: Workman Rios Valdez (ERod to IL?) I think Sawamura for Workman is easy, as is Sale for Rios. I think we'll DFA Andriese (out of options), unless someone goes on the IL(ERod?). If we trade for a pitcher without trading away a pitcher, who do we demote or DFA?
  19. Sox XBH Leaders 53 Devers 50 JD 44 Bogey 39 Kike 31 Renfroe 29 Verdugo 24 Dalbec SB Leaders 8 Vaz 5 Bogey 5 Verdugo 3 Devers, Marwin, Santana OBP .374 Bogey .373 JD .356 Devers .340 Verdugo .323 Kike .313 Renfroe SLG .580 Devers .565 JD .524 Bogey .466 Kike .455 Renfroe .410 Verdugo .397 Dalbec
  20. We could give them Chavis in return... LOL!
  21. Odor has actually done much better than I expected, but when you traded for him to make him a permanent fixture, I knew there was trouble in Yankee Kingdom.
  22. I trust Sox management to know when promotions are due, but I always feel like I want players doing very well moved up quickly.
  23. I've been very cautious on Houck, but the sample size is small or even tiny. (Houck has 5 PAs on 3rd time arounds.) I'll ask this: How do Perez and Richards do the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time around? I see Houck as an improvement or at least a possible improvement getting very near the point where we try and find out. Besides, my idea of trading Richards or Perez does NOT involve making Houck a starter. He remains the starter depth, just in case.
  24. ERA is highly flawed. ERA- and ERA+ try to fix some of the problems, but even they are highly flawed. We are not saying the stat is meaningless or should not be a major factor in determining the value of any SP'er, but no stat should ever be used, by itself, to determine how good or bad anyone is or was. The value of going 6 innings vs 3, 4, or 5 is enormous, too. There's a reason they call 6 IP and 3 ER (a 4.50 ERA) a quality start. It's the 6 IP not the 4.50 ERA that makes it quality. Many of his other stats and metrics place him in the top 30 (a #1), 31-60 (a #2) or near the top of 61-90 (high #3). I'm not sure how this is viewed as mediocre. I can see calling a 4.40 ERA mediocre with no context added, but there is more to pitching than ERA.
