  1. They would have paid Hosmer had they DFA'd him. Trading him got them Jay Groome and a tiny savings of the min salary deduction.
  2. Who? We can extend Devers, starting in year 2024, if needed, and not go over the tax line.
  3. If we do go big splash, Correa makes the most sense. While bringing Bogey back would be great, it would not feel like a big splash, even thought it would be.
  4. This could be the year we make trades that involve taking on larger contracts. We could even take on a "dead money" contract along with a coveted player, so the return package would not need to be so great. I agree, the FA market is not all that great, but there are other ways to spend the $90M and improve the roster.
  5. Up until now, I don't think the foundation was strong enough to build a winner with a few significant FA signings or trades, but starting at the 2019 deadline up to the Story signing, that's about all we have seen. I'm not sure 2023 will be the "pounce" season, but there is no reason not to make at least a couple moves that raise heads and open eyes. They can be m oves that brighten beyond 2023, and really, they should (must IMO.) Conforto on a one year deal to bridge to Rafaela? Sorry, we lose Kike, too, so we need a longer term solution for RF. No SS? Really? Are we really going to sign a one year bridge to Mayer, assuming he's ready by 2024? I'd be okay going short term at one of these two slots, if we go very big at the other- like maybe Judge in RF or Correa at SS. I'd love to see Swanson & Nimmo, but I doubt we even get one. We'll see what happens, but MLBTRs bummed me out.
  6. They did get the Pham option amount wrong, when that trade was made.
  7. , The only way taking on that lux tax hit might make any sense is if Max Ferguson and Corey Rosier are way, way better than Jay Groome. (I don't see that, at all.)
  8. Maybe Rogers. Don't know much about Senga. No way will those 4 will draw fans to the park or TV.
  9. If going cheap placeholder at SS meant we could sign Judge, Rodon, Montero and Fulmer, would that satisfy most fans?
  10. All the articles said the Padres picked up all the rest of the contract, minus the min salary. Nobody said the Sox took the tax hit. It would have been reported as such.
  11. Playoff Rankings 1. Georgia 2. Ohio St. 3. Michigan 4. TCU 5. Tennessee 6. Oregon 7. LSU (highest ranked 2 loss team) 8. USC 9. Alabama 10. Clemson 11. Ole Miss 12. UCLA 20. Notre Dame
  12. Maybe Simmons? Can Segura still play SS?
  13. It's my wish, not my prediction. My guess is, we add 2 decent starters in hopes we find the next Wachas.
  14. Some serious gobble-dee-goop.
  15. It has to be on the Padres, but when it comes to MLB, you can't assume the logical answer.
  16. That can't be right, but no site explains where that $6M tax budget differential goes.
  17. The AAV only matters to a team, if they are going over the tax line. It doesn't help or hurt, otherwise. Hosmer signed a $144M/8 year contract that comes to $18M on the tax budget for all 8 years. Nothing changes that, except maybe who it counts against, if a trade happens. Yes, the Padres were paying him $21M for 5 years, and the tax line was only $18M, but it shows $18M for all 8 years, if you look at previous totals on cots. When they traded Hosmer to the Sox, they agreed to pay all but the min salary for the remaining contract. That means they pay the Sox $13M a year minus the min salary, but on the tax line, it should be $18M minus the min salary, as that line never changes. The $18M counts on someone's tax line, and IMO it should be SD, since they are paying almost his whole salary.
  18. I totally agree, and trying to build a rotation by striking gold with #5 starters or long shots like Wacha and Martin perez with the Rangers, this season is not a strategy I support. Building a winning rotation almost always starts by adding solid #1 or #2 types, which pushes Sale and Whitlock to #3-4 starters and Bello and Pivetta to #4-5 or 6 starters. I'm not sure management is ready to trade top prospects to acquire an ace, but I'm thinking they may need to, this winter or next.
  19. Yes, you are right. It's a $13M contract per year, from now on, but the tax number was and remains $18M. Another mistake by cots.
  20. Cots has Hosmer on SDP's tax budget line as $12.28M, which deducts min salary from his salary.
  21. "Those picks" used to be much higher than now.
  22. I'd hate that. I'm all about "Devers Forevers," but I don't want what is happening to Bogey to happen again.
  23. Me, too. I like Houck in the pen.
  24. He should get an award for that.
  25. LAD might offer T Anderson a QO.
