fyi, thanks to the insane rules of mlb, Hembree had a perfect outing--4 outs, no runs. he kept his precious era down at 1.29.

this is of course impossible, but sometimes I think this team wants to sabotage the manager.

, Let me tell you something based on bitter experience. You do not want to mess with the northern long-eared bat, especially if you want to do construction near their possible (not actual) habitat. Around here we kind of think, "let sleeping bats lie."

Last night I was pretty sure the Sox would lose because of the weak hitting and was delighted to be proven wrong. I still think the hitting is weak, but love that Uehara did not have his good splitter and quickly gave up 3 singles before Maddon could pull him. Hernandez single was weak, but Bogaerts and especially Beni had solid singles. Then Betts struck out, and the Cubs went into their own comedy routine of wild pitches and bad throws, thank goodness. Given my almost continuous griping about this team's underperformance so far, I now look forward to this series with some excitement because short term--it's a very, very long season--is potentially at hand. We will go with Porcello, Sale, Pomeranz, and Wright against the Orioles' Bundy, Asher, Gausman, and Jimenez. I do not foresee a slugfest if only because I don't think our guys have it in them. So far we have lost slugfests except for beating the Jays 8-7.

That's what I think. If one catcher is hitting better overall and still a decent catcher, then try to match catcher to pitcher where you think that makes a difference. For example, I think Leon has caught Sale all 5 games, so I would favor using him whenever Sale pitches.

You just described Sunday night's win over the Cubs. 3 singles, a K by Betts, then the deluge of wild pitch, error, you name it, to bring in 4 big runs. The Sox took 2 of 3 despite errors, bad base running, and not that much hitting.

This game and this team are not worth staying up for.

Gang, it ain't the umpire. It's our guys who these days can't hit, can't field, and can't run the bases. Right now this team is finding ways to lose, but the worst part, because it is so crucial, is the weak hitting.

the runs will come??? how many is the question. last year the sox led the american league in runs by over 100. will they even lead the american league this year? I ask because right now the yankees and orioles both have solid pitching and better hitting than the sox. plus let's not forget that this team does not have the baserunning, bunting, hit and run, or other skills needed to manufacture runs. pedroia trying to stretch that single into a double yesterday was a public spectacle, borderline clownish. the sox don't need to lead the league in dingers to score a lot, but they can't afford to be dead last as they are now. major power outage. we also ain't going to win games on defense. heck, right now john henry needs to go public with $1000 bonuses for each time a pitcher successfully covers first base on a grounder hit to the right side because they sure as heck are not going to do it on their own. or he can fire farrell and get a manager who will get their attention on fundamentals. In other words, this team, despite much better than expected pitching, badly needs to hit and especially score runs to win. given our--mine, anyway--offseason expectations, they are a real disappointment so far.
