  1. I'm quite sure Machado was trying to miss the bag because it was intended to be a late slide, which means he would arrive at 2B a lot sooner and with a lot more momentum than usual. I think his intent was simply to overslide 2B as he in fact did. I do not think he wanted to get Pedroia, however, and he certainly acted as though he did not--and that's the way Pedroia took it. He was looking for speed to 2B to beat the throw and not to nail Pedroia. As for Barnes, I have no problem agreeing it was simply a terrible pitch, but, however, with serious intent to hit Machado. FWIW, my initial interpretation of that slide was the same as yours and I in fact compared it to something Ty Cobb would have done--come in with spikes high. Two things changed my mind. First, Machado's actions after the slide when he grabbed Pedroia who was going down. This suggested that spiking was not his intent. Second, Pedroia's reaction, which was that it was part of the game and not malicious.
  2. Betts has played 15 of 18 games.
  3. Meh. The only key MIA has been JBJ. Plus, let's face it, you can't assume everyone on a team will be healthy all the time and in no need of bereavement or other leave. Yesterday's 3-dinger win was instructive--for me, anyway. Our biggest shortage so far is home runs--even with those three the Sox are still dead last of 30 MLB teams in hitting them. To me that's a serious power outage that can't easily be explained away by JBJ's absence. By Ortiz's absence, maybe, but not JBJ's. I'm not saying this team can't bounce back because of course they can. But at the same time, I think what we have seen so far suggests that a repeat of last year is less likely than before the season started.
  4. Thanks to Kimmi for ending the two game losing streak.
  5. Going after Machado's head was stupid, also clearly intentional. Machado's slide was all about beating the throw to 2b, which he almost did and is why Pedroia said it was no big deal after the game. To me the Sox, especially Farrell and Barnes, look foolish.
  6. Really stupid to go at Machado's head. Makes the Sox look like bush league, especially since it was clearly intentional. The spiking was not intentional, which was obvious to anyone watching the innumerable replays. Machado was simply trying to beat the throw to 2b and he almost did. That's why Pedroia said right after the game he did not think that slide was a big deal. I'm with Pedroia on this one.
  7. Second that. Abad sucks.
  8. Great run to 3b by Bogie.
  9. Bogie starts it with one of his patented weak singles to right.
  10. Guts ball, Kimmi. I am completely in support. Time for the real Sox to show up.
  11. A couple of you mentioned Ortiz. Not long after Manny Ramirez left, I think in 2008, Ortiz began to complain that he couldn't "get a pitch to hit." This was and is a reminder that really good hitters like Manny and Papi help other hitters, especially those in front of them.
  12. What home runs? We're dead last in MLB with 8, vs. 13 by the 29th team.
  13. Anytime you hit a dry period, you gotta ask. Right now opposing pitchers are finding it too easy to get our guys out, especially with RISP. One number stands out--8 dingers. That isn't just the fewest for any MLB team, it's just a bit more than half--8 vs. 13--than the team in 29th place. Massive power outage. The good news is that we probably have a pretty good lineup. I certainly thought so. And it's early--we're just past the 1/10th point into the season.
  14. Good arguments on both sides. I don't like him because of his defense, but agree the smart move is to give him more time.
  15. That slide reminds me of how Ty Cobb, one of the meanest players ever, is reputed to have slid into 2b. Now, however, there is a rule designed to protect infielders. The problem in this case is that Machado did in fact slide directly into the bag. It was a late slide to give him a better chance of beating the throw and in fact he almost did. It was a close play on the force out. Apparently, that's the way Pedroia sees it too. Given that, I'm going with Pedroia despite the graphic evidence of the replay.
  16. Meh. I think good pitching always beats good hitting.
  17. RISP disease--0/9. First four Sox hitters left 16 people on base. Some were the same guys, of course, but still. Benintendi left 6 on.
  18. Great at bat by Young!
  19. Pom was great for Pom--2 runs in 5.1 innings. Bundy is simply a much better pitcher.
  20. Bundy is actually dominating our lineup. We haven't come lose to scoring even with men on base. The second time through our line up we had one hit, a single by Hernandez.
  21. ESPN had an article this week saying that sac bunts are dying fast all over MLB. tonight we've seen why maybe they should not be.
  22. He lost the weight, but did not regain his skills, assuming he had some. Why are we required to root for someone who is working on torpedoing his 2d of 3 games? There might be hope for his hitting, but his throws are inaccurate and his glove has a hole in it.
  23. Also, against a righty starter, we are going righty lefty righty lefty righty lefty righty righty lefty--with that last righty being Vazquez.
  24. Herndandez at SS batting 9th. Is Bogaerts hurt or is this a planned rest day?
