  1. Leon got his pitch on the 3-2 count and just screwed it up.
  2. When behind in the count, Porcello is inclined to throw a fastball near the center of the zone which opposing hitters of course are sitting on. He's predictable, but just maybe Leon (calling the pitches) is too.
  3. Is it possible our starters just aren't ready to pitch when the game starts? ERod does this too.
  4. True. Heat's also off the team because of Bogie's 2 run dinger off a pitch so far inside it almost went behind him.
  5. Porcello's bad, but only 2 of those 5 runs are earned because of 3 errors in 2 innings--Porcello, Devers, and Leon. All three throwing errors. This is a team loss as much as it is Porcello's.
  6. Porcello is throwing lots of strikes, most of which the Orioles are feasting on. My guess is both runs will be unearned because the pitcher as fielder--which is part of his job, for crying out loud--is totally divorced from the guy throwing pitches. Complete pitchers like Sale know how to make throws from the mound, how to get to first quickly on grounders to the right side, but those skills don't count when determining the sacred ERA for a pitcher.
  7. Ok, first real look at Davis in the lineup. moonslav says recently (82 PA's) his OPS has been very good. My NOAA maps says clear skies, except in SE Texas, which looks almost as nasty as it really is. This year the Orioles can only be spoilers, but they have relished that prospect in the past. I wonder is Machado will go after Nunez having done a thorough job on Pedroia's knee (which Pedroia insists was a clean slide).
  8. Hell, I am deaf enough to require hearing aids in both ears. A lot of charge 6 one day in June 1967. But my eyes ain't deef.
  9. Agree. Lots of numbers and graphs for something simple--sliders this year have almost killed Betts' bat. But the writer is betting Betts is too good to let that continue much longer. Plus he is hitting the ball hard, even with the popups. This year more and more I think the pitching coach is doing a better job than the hitting coach, but what do I know?
  10. Reasonable. Devers back to 6th, where he has flourished (small sample size) vs. languishing in the 5 slot. Avoidance of playing both Davis and Holt. Davis 8th and Leon 9th, about right. Without JBJ, just four lefty bats against righty Hellickson--about right. Beni and Betts switching can't hurt. Plus 3 fast guys at the top of the order with some power. Moreland OK at cleanup, and Bogaerts "promoted" to 5th--might work. I really like Leon 9th because, like JBJ, he can do some damage there, especially batting lefty. Young is suspect at DH, but still better than Holt with Ramirez hurting (I guess). If Porcello is truly back, if Fister continues his recent successes after early disasters, if Pom just stays 2017 Miracle Pom, if ERod can pitch well early as well as late, you gotta like this rotation. Who needs $217M Price or knuckleballer Wright? I think there's another starter, not too bad, but can't remember his name. But when the Sox need to close a deal and make the sale, that guy ain't too bad.
  11. Strongly agree on those 6 runs last night--always good to see when the pitching is bad--the team did not quit.
  12. Even without Ortiz, this team is showing me something despite Price and Wright on the DL. The bullpen is a little shaky, but the rotation--except for that guy Sale--is coming around. Nunez and Devers have really helped the lineup even though Devers is in a mini-slump, which I claim is because Farrell moved him away from his comfort zone and into the 5th slot. Defense not so great, but tolerable. If your Davis numbers bear fruit in Boston, maybe we won't miss JBJ too much. Pedroia could come back and JBJ is sure to. But the biggie right now is that all of the rotation--Sale, Porcello, Pomeranz, ERod, and Fister--have shown they can pitch well. In August, no less. Our 2013 postseason depended heavily on great pitching and just enough hitting. Last year the pitching stunk.
  13. Over Owens? All day long.
  14. Too late. I already joined the "why Brentz" movement. Good stuff, though.
  15. Not such great stuff. The 2016 Sox had a 9 or 10 game winning streak in September which won the AL East even with the late losses. This year, as last year, we are in a race with the Guardians to get the higher playoff slot. Or are we doomed to play each other regardless of who is 2d and who is 3d?
  16. You noticed. I borrowed that word from moonslav.
  17. I also like that the Sox score 6 in a losing cause. The split with the Guardians keep us 2 1/2 ahead of the Guardians and 4 1/2 against the Yankees. Could easily have been worse, especially given the Kluber-Fister matchup. I still think Devers should drop down a tad in the order. I hope Davis can help but was not impressed with the K or the throw to the plate. The downside is going into tonight I thought our chances were good for 3-1 even given Sale's struggles vs. Cleveland. Plus I'm worried he might be getting tired.
  18. The biggest problem with tonight's game is its length combined with a game at Fenway tomorrow night--thank goodness it's a short trip. Also, we used a lot of relievers in the Cleveland series even with Fister's complete game. However, I believe Kelly, Reed, Barnes, and Kimbrel all now have 2 days rest because of Fister.
  19. ESPN is basically taking Girardi and the Yankees side in today's fracas. Granted, the Tigers hit Sanchez first, but it was not lethal and it in fact loaded the bases. The retaliation against Encarcion was with 2 outs and no one on, and you can't convince me the pitcher was trying to miss Encarcion. Then the Yankees hit a guy in the helmet, which to me was totally uncalled for, yet the Yankees completely defended it. The brawl after the Encarion episode also led to a lengthy delay of game, including a long warm-up by Chapman, which probably allowed the Tigers starter to come back cold and throw balls and the Yankees to score 3 to tie. I do believe the Tigers won on merit, not because of the HBP's and brawls. Both Girardi and his bench coach were benched, the latter after the Yankees beaned a Tiger.
  20. Ahem. In his last start--against the Yankees--he went 7 but gave up 4 mostly on dingers.
  21. Same thing to Ramirez. All cutters. 7 straight for the K.
  22. 4 straight cutters to nail Beni. Zero deception. Just a tough pitch..
  23. Boy do I hope you are right. In fact, that was my first thought, that for them he is too predictable. But tonight he also didn't seem to have that high heat he has had when he is scorching hitters.
  24. Might also be time to drop Devers back down if only because he hasn't turned 21 yet. Like everyone else I was astounded at how he came out of the gate. I mean that dinger off Chapman's 103 mph fast ball was the stuff of legends. He seemed to hit almost everything hard even with the K's. but--I'm repeating myself--that great run was a small sample size.
