  1. Another tough starter from the Cubs, lefty Imanaga with 4 good pitches (fastball, slider, curve, and changeup) and command. The Sox hit lefties better than righties, .790 vs .744. Some OPS's: Gonzalez 1.409, Bregman 1.019, Ref .932, Narvaez .902, Rafaela .822, Story .740, Abreu .686, Toro .608, Anthony .591, Duran .564, Wong .533, Mayer .400, and Yoshida .000. I'm guessing Cora will go with the first nine above, which would mean no Duran and no Mayer.
  2. It sure did. And I would have been fine with keeping Devers as DH, which meant no slot for Yoshida, which is why Breslow wanted Devers at 1b. Right now I'm not so sure Yoshida has a real role. Today once again we saw Anthony, a better hitter than Yoshida, as the DH so that Duran, Rafaela, and Rafaela could all start in the outfield. Yoshida was 3/4 in his first game and 1-10 in his next three starts. Plus he K'd today pinch-hitting for Narvaez.
  3. Ian Browne has a very good write-up of the game on mlb.com. He points out that the first pitch to Suzuki in the 1st (with 2 on) was a fastball above the zone. Without that dinger, it's a ballgame. What's left out of the story on those 2 walks by Giolito in the first inning is both were on 3-2 counts. In the first BB, his 5th pitch was close enough to have been called strike 3. In the 2d BB, Tucker fouled off 4 pitches before getting the walk on pitch 8. Toro's baserunning mistake was bad, but I'm not confident the Sox would have scored if he had made it back to 2b. The next better walked, and Narvaez hit a perfect double play ball, which in reality was the 3d out so no relay 1b was necessary. The Sox had some hard hit balls that were caught, but so did the Cubs. Plus their bullpen was excellent, as was their defense, especially their right fielder. Duran made a terrific catch to prevent a double or worse. The Sox had 7 hits to Chicago's 6. Both pitching staffs gave up 4 BB's. So I agree this game was winnable against a very good team on their home field where they 31-16.
  4. One of the most vitriolic posts this season and totally without merit. I myself complained about Narvaez being too high (4th) in the order and that Story and/or Rafaela should have been higher, but I did so in the context that I think Cora's lineups have been really good this year. In fact, one of the things I kind of like lately is not overloading the lineup with lefty bats against righty starters. Now it's more liked 5 lefty bats, including Toro's S bat, and 4 righty bats. The fact is that the Cubs had superb pitching today, which is why the 3 run dinger in the 1st proved to be the game winning hit. Rafaela has in fact flourished near or at the bottom of the order. Maybe he's comfortable there. He leads the Sox in runs scored with 58 and is 4th in rbi's with 48. Duran leads off but is 3d in rbi's with 50 and 2d in runs scored with 53.
  5. Not so. Over the past 15 games the Sox have scored 110 runs, 7.3 runs per game. Today, granted, not so much.
  6. Of course. He was great in 2016, the year the Cubs finally won the WS.
  7. Well, I suppose the good news today is that after the 1st inning it's been a 1-1 tie through 7 innings. I think the Sox lineup works better with Narvaez dropped down to about 8th in the batting order. Hah! Yoshida just struck pinch-hitting for Narvaez.
  8. We know for a fact that it bounced inbounds but landed out of bounds. The question is whether it was fair when it passed over 3b. I think the home plate umpire called it right because it landed just beyond 3b and therefore probably was out as it passed over 3b.
  9. Meh. I think a case can be made for Duran despite those stats. His speed is still ridiculous. I think his so-so fielding days are over even though his throw home was on the wrong side of home plate. He's 4th on the Sox in rbi's. And, believe it or not, he leads the Sox in total bases with 172. Rafaela is 2d with 153. My guess is he has a lot more fan appeal than Abreu.
  10. You're so clairvoyant. And modest too. As I said on page 1, the Cubs win 2 of 3 games at Wrigley and the Sox have a losing record on the road. We should have been dead, dead, dead after that 1st inning 3 run dinger. But Giolito righted himself until the 6th when Weissert did him no favors.
  11. Abreu has a higher OPS and higher WAR than Duran, leads the Sox in dingers with 18, and is a better outfielder. Duran has 103 K's to Abreu's 71 going into this game.
  12. On the other hand, you can make another argument that Wong could not have prevented the 3 runs in the 1st and that Narvaez has done well with Giolito over the next 4 innings. Thielbar made mincemeat of of Abreu and Mayer in the 6th. Story with the popup wasn't much better.
  13. I'm going to say it. I think today Wong would have done better than Narvaez. That does not mean I would have started Wong because Narvaez is the main man behind the plate. But I say it for 2 reasons. First, of course, no catcher interference. Second is that Wong would have batted 8th or 9th and done less harm than Narvaez batting 4th. Giolito just saved Narvaez's miserable ass!
  14. Narvaez egregious error. Not the the throw to 2b, but catcher interference on an 0-2 count.
  15. Narvaez partially redeemed Toro by hitting a perfect GIDP ball with 2 outs. Had Toro stayed at 2b, the inning would have ended with a GIDP.
  16. He was great in May but has slid backwards since--.961 to .780 in June to .701 in July. In this lineup he has no business batting 4th
  17. Probably, but ahead of him were Duran, Rafaela, and Abreu. Great, gutsy grab by Duran!!!
  18. Giolito: 3 up, 3 down in the 2d with 2 K's. He needed 30 pitches in the 1st, 10 in the 2d. Bregman opposite field single--good at bat. Duran to 3d of course. Walking him was stupid.
  19. The first five OPS's in the Cubs lineup are .927, .884, .878, .852, and .894.
