Last guy I want is Castillo. I'm just saying JD is OK in LF now and then. He wasn't all that bad in RF about a week ago when he made a good grab in deep right center.

Time to alert the media. The 2018 Sox have completely thrown caution to the winds and allowed a very solid hitter but not so good outfielder to play left field. Wasn't it Jimmy Piersall who once said he should get twice the salary because he had to cover LF as well as CF? Yesterday's lineup worked because Betts was out and Cora wanted Moreland as the fill-in bat. You wanted Swihart in LF? Devers plays 3b for the same reason JD goes to LF now and then--optimizing the offense while taking a risk on defense.

Are you seriously unaware that his OPS as a left fielder is .377 higher than his OPS as a DH? And in this particular case Betts was out, so Beni went to CF and JBJ to RF. Are you also unaware that Devers has 5 errors compared to the entire rest of the team which as 3?

Amazing, difficult win. Porcello is the ace on this squad, which I never thought I'd say. Devers left 7 on today and Moreland 4. JD had 4 of our 7 hits, scored 1 of our runs and batted in 2 others, so I frankly didn't give a s*** if he misjudged (waited too long to go back) a shot to LF. It's possible Leon is a better defensive catcher than Vazquez.

OK, Porcello is the man so far this season and that is beyond question. Better than Sale and better than Price. I'm pretty sure I said early in the season there was no way, no how he could be effective this year. The 2 run dinger today was off a decent changeup that was low in the zone, but not low enough. The rbi single was off a great pitch, outside and low vs. a lefty bat.
  6. Maxbialystock
Yup. He left 6 guys on so far.

Porcello is know as a sinker ball pitcher, but that only works if you go low in the zone, which today he seems to have a problem doing.
  8. Maxbialystock
Another no doubt simplistic generalization. Sox pitchers, at least for the last few years, have never been as comfortable pitching low in the zone as other teams pitchers have been--or so it seems to me. Today Andriese has thrown the majority of his pitches either low in the zone or below the zone and still had no problem with walks.

It's bad both ways. Porcello just gave up that 2 run dinger, but is easily the best starter we've had in this series unless the wheels come off. Meanwhile, the Rays pitchers are having no problem getting outs when they need them.

I'm not sure it's all about rest. Part of his plan seems to be to keep all 13 position players involved vs. the norm of having the same 9 guys every day with maybe one platoon guy. The only guy he hasn't been able to do that for is Swihart because he clearly doesn't trust him--or maybe the pitchers don't--at catcher, and he already has plenty of choices for LF and 3B and 1B. I believe Swihart's one start is as a DH. Weird. Is it worth noting that playing 13 guys hasn't helped the pinch-hitting? I believe the Sox so far this season have 0 pinch hits.

Like Kimmi, I'm fine with almost all managerial decisions and believe managerial accountability is all about wins and losses, with the one caveat that the FO can always choose to boot a winning manager who they think should have won more. Occasionally, too, they will keep a losing manager--see Farrell, who won it all in 2013 and finished at the bottom of the AL East in 2014 and 2015 and stayed 2 more years. As for Cora, I give him credit for that 17-2 opening run and now await what he and the team do after going 2-5. Completely unfair to say this, but he is managing the highest paid team in MLB.

Through the first 19 games the Sox were an astonishing--no other word for it--17-2. Through the last 7 games the Sox are 2-5 and by the end of today will have lost two of three series. Beat the Jays at Toronto and lost to the Athletics at Oakland and the Rays at Fenway, where a sweep is now possible. Oakland beat us with pitching, and the Rays with hitting, lots and lots of hitting. The Sox have lost exactly one game this season by 4 or more runs, and last night was the game and Price was on the mound for the first half of it. To me all of the above is fodder for moonslav's thread on a realistic view of 2018, part deux. What's the Bette Davis line? "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night." We done been bumped.

Bad day in black rock. We need Spencer Tracy, and I sure as heck ain't him.
  14. Maxbialystock
Price vs Chririnos Betts Beni HanRam JD Bogie Devers Nunez JBJ Vazquez Price rights the ship.

I just don’t like Pom’s dependence on a lousy fastball. Plus he is a lefty without a decent change up. To me his bad pitches are inevitable, not bad luck as you seem to think. A pretty good curve, that’s it. The reality is that he is a 5 inning guy because he cannot afford to challenge hitters with his weak stuff. You could be right and Pom could turn into a 7 or even 8 inning stud. Me, I’m skeptical. Plus I honestly think Velazquez has better stuff.

Vazquez's OPS last year was .735, better than Swihart's when he started over half the games in 2015. To me that's good enough. As for his pitch-calling this year, I'm pretty sure the calls are coming from the bench. I'm far from a scout, but the Sox have tons of them and they just re-signed Vazquez to a longer term contract because they think he's a keeper.

I watched the at bat more closely than you did, it seems. The 3d strike was a great pitch and an even bet Beni would have missed it had he swung. Just as important, it was on a 3-2 count with Devers on deck and Betts behind him. Your over-reaction made it seem as though that was the only play in the entire game worth noticing--you know, with the giant print/font and all.
  19. Maxbialystock
Some missed opportunities, but also some excellent pitching by Velazquez and even Hembree. Great to see Bogie back. This one is all on Pomeranz, who right now looks like the worthless piece of s*** I thought he was. He loves his 88 mph fastball, but not as much as the hitters do. He does have a changeup, which is good, but it's a lousy changeup and therefore worthless. One guy on here kept ranting about how terrible Vazquez was/is, but he threw out two basestealers, got a double, and scored our first run.
  20. Maxbialystock
Right. Blame it all on Beni. Had you watched the game, you would know this one was entirely on Pomeranz. That was a great fastball on the outside corner. Too bad Pomeranz's great fastballs are nonexistent.
  21. Maxbialystock
You're wrong, simple as that. In 2015 he was the starting catcher for over half the games and was terrible. 16 passed balls. Lousy at throwing guys out at 2b. OPS .711. That's why they've used someone else ever since. That's why they keep using him as a DH or LF or 3B this year. Good athlete. Maybe a good hitter, but sure hasn't shown it yet. But the Sox have better players at the positions he can play, especially catcher.
  22. Maxbialystock
Who gives a s*** whether he gets an at bat? He's got no position for which he is better qualified than the guy already playing it.
  23. Maxbialystock
Swihart is definitely the man. Great hitter. Well, he didn't K, anyway. He's our man when we need a very weak fly to right field.
  24. Maxbialystock
Vazquez lined out. Nobody in the lineup has a hit, and 5 of the 9 have K'd. And you want to pick on Vazquez?
  25. Maxbialystock
The contrast between Pom and Snell, both lefties, is stark. Pom is lucky to have held the Rays to 3, and Snell so far looks unhittable. Plus he is throwing a lot of strike and not needing a lot of pitches.
