  1. I said the same thing in the game thread. Because it happened spur of the moment, I can using a short reliever for the 2d, but Johnson or Velazquez should have gone 4 or 5 innings. This is the 2d game of 13 games without a day off for bullpen recovery. On top of that, Cora has a pitching coach who should also be focused on both the rest of the game (8 more innings after Price left) and on the 11 games to follow before a break. I suppose the good news is that a new manager should be allowed to make early mistakes. Let's hope he is learning. I worry a little because he might still be focused on the two bench-clearing episodes and what might be ahead as a result.
  2. MLB at its best. Testerone uber alles.
  3. Why no long reliever when Cora has 2 of them?
  4. As for Cora, I have to wonder why neither Johnson nor Velazquez has been used. Both should be good long relievers and only one can start against the Orioles.
  5. Meh. Tanaka had 2 outs and an 8-2 lead when the grand slam occurred. Absolutely not time to warm someone else. Plus it was Tanaka on the mound with struggling JD coming to the plate.
  6. Yankees fans may be pissed at their manager, but I'm sympathetic. Those 4 runs all came with two outs and fairly suddenly. No time to warm someone up, especially with a 6 run lead and a pretty darn good pitcher on the mound and a struggling JD coming up.
  7. What is it about Devers that makes him absolutely refuse to take a pass? Especially on a 3-1 count?
  8. Clever. It took me a moment to get it. 60% for a whole season translates to 97 wins, which the Sox have done just twice in the John Henry era. We all know it's a long season and realize that 9-1, while great in itself, doesn't guarantee a great season. Thus your "realistic view" thread is a chance to look at how and why we won those 9 games and to decipher how predictive they are. You have commented on HanRam and others, but to me the most amazing aspect of those 10 games is the pitching and especially the rotation. Even ERod's 3 runs in 3.2 innings (and over 90 pitches) wasn't terrible. And the other 9 starts, including game 1 which we lost, were fantastic--at least, to me. After 10 games we have the 3d best ERA, 2.53, in MLB. When was the last time we did that in the regular season? I'm pretty sure we did that in the 2013 postseason, but usually our pitching lags well behind our hitting.
  9. So that's our winning formula--you weren't watching. A Yankee fan in our office and a very good guy, so today's chat was brief with no gloating. Actually, he's the one guy I enjoy talking baseball with because we know a lot about each other's teams.
  10. Any Sox player who gets a hit in the 8th should be fined.
  11. Orioles had men on 2d and 3d in the bottom of the 8th with the score tied 1-1 and no one out. Final score? 2-1 Jays.
  12. This game is going to last 4 hours without going to extra innings--and in the cold too. Ain't MLB grand?
  13. Another classic Nunez play--he gets to the ball, but can't actually grab it. Time and time again, but still nary an error.
  14. I said that and have seen a high percentage of good calls, but agree he is giving Sale the upper right corner.
  15. You woulda thunk Stanton hit a grand slam instead of the single. Boy, espn loves their Yankees. Or is this actually the YES feed?
  16. That's two on that corner he has missed, so my compliment was a tad too soon.
  17. So far the home plate umpire has been freaking great on calling balls and strikes.
  18. The write up on him says he has power to all fields. Regardless, I'm just happy he made solid contact.
  19. Yup. He is also gifted at stopping grounders without actually catching them or having a play for an out.
  20. espn announcers sure love those Yankees though. Was that five replays on Judge's grab in right field? Plus all the stats about how hard Severino throws, also the other Yankee pitchers. Near the end of ST, their "experts" picked the Yankees to breeze thru the AL which, I have to admit, is entirely possible with that monster lineup. Sale doesn't seem worried, however.
  21. My wife just said, "Yankee pot roast for dinner tonight." Also: "please don't try yanking my chain."
  22. Nunez made contact on 2 pitches and swung at strikes. JD, if anything, was more clueless than JBJ because he hit nothing and K's on 3 pitches. JBJ at least got to 5 pitches. Credit to Severino on the two K's, both fast balls just above the zone--swung on and missed. For the most part Severino seems to have pretty good location and pretty darn good slider and changeup. Fastball up to 99mph not too shabby either. Good new is he gave up a run and needed 27 pitches in the first. 23 pitches for Sale in 2 innings--fantastic. Don't mind the 2 hits one bit.
  23. Actually some truth in that in my view. The bottom third is still the bottom third, except maybe the 2004 Sox. That said, the bottom third was key to that 8th inning rally Sunday.
  24. Thanks, mvp. About what I expected except for Holt. I was hoping for Lin.
