  1. The entire Sox coaching staffs for two different managers assure you that Swihart is not a better catcher than Leon or Vazquez. Yes, he is a better runner, but that only helps if you get on base. With Vazquez and Leon catching last year, the Sox caught 39%--second best in MLB--of opposing baserunners stealing.
  2. Yup. About as bad as letting Baltimore score 7 runs. A bad night all around, but most of my anger is toward Pom.
  3. Yes, "smart" was over the top, but I was and am still torqued at the notion that JBJ should have been in that game because he would have K'd instead of GIDP'd. Indeed, that same argument can now be made for every single GIDP the Sox have: too bad the hitter didn't K because we'd have been better off. That too me makes no sense because it depends entirely on 20-20 hindsight. But of course hindsight runs rampant on our game threads, so why the heck not? As for JBJ, as handy as his K's might occasionally be (in lieu of a GIDP), it would appear Cora and the FO are going to let him watch some more games.
  4. Agree. Mancini looked awful, but it's actually not that easy a play because the fielder is worried about hitting the wall plus maybe the wind blew the ball to the right.
  5. Fine. And I stand by the notion that using that example--that in this case a K would have worked better than what happened, a GIDP--is a good reason for having JBJ play more is absurd.
  6. If so, you have stats I don't.
  7. My impression is he doesn't. Usually, he is the mostly likely to take the first pitch and maybe even a 2d strike, but he usually defends the plate/zone with 2 strikes. It was just a smart pitch by Cobb.
  8. Sadly, something to remember is that, with that at bat, the Sox remain the worst pinch-hitting team in MLB this year--1 for 19.
  9. The full context was that, had JBJ been in the game, he would have struck out and that would have kept the rally alive. I consider that to be an absurdity and the worse kind of 20-20 hindsight. And it was said to advance the argument that JBJ should continue to be the starting centerfielder.
  10. Didn't look near the left fielder to me. I'll check the replay when it shows up on the game videos. You could be right.
  11. If Nunez gets on, gotta pinch hit for JBJ even if it is the 6th.
  12. I am astounded, but it's real. The knuckler is definitely working.
  13. He looked terrible last time and like magic tonight.
  14. It's true. Someone actually said that, had Bradley been the batter in this one game, he would have struck out and kept the rally going. I don't remember who the guy was that hit into the GIDP. I kept saying you never want a batter to strike out because you fear the GIDP, but made no headway.
  15. No, no, no. It's an article of faith by some on talksox that Beni is both the dumbest and the worst baserunner on this team. He is constantly being chastised for doing anything besides advancing cautiously to the next base.
  16. Manley Ramirez, on the other hand, gets the booby prize. Let's hear again from the advocates who believe that, with men on 1b and 3b with 1 out, the smart play by Manny was to strike out. The rally would still be alive if he had played it smart. And, yes, that was said on a game thread the other night.
  17. OK, ladies and gents, this guy here is the man of the hour because he called it.
  18. That is absolutely astonishing that he barely made it to 3b from 1b on a clean double. Not a good baserunner, period. But of course he did make it all the way home from 3b on the single. There's that.
  19. But he's so great in the outfield\.
  20. Good point. He has done so tonight. But six fastballs right down the middle and zero contact are on the hitter, not Cobb.
  21. Will the JBJ fan club please take note that tonight he has struck out twice on fastballs right down the middle.
  22. At this point in this season, it's kind of hard to imagine anyone overrating Vazquez.
  23. I think Leon is better, but I'm not so sure he gets that one cleanly. The problem is Pom, not the defense.
