  1. Do you mean Benintendi? Who gives a s*** if he is once in a generation? He's pretty doggone good--except for the arm, a five tool player. That's plenty good enough for me.
  2. Meh. My take is it's great to see consistent starting pitching, period. My number 5 guy was Porcello, and today he is the world's greatest starting pitcher, at least thru 5 innings. We really need this win. Oops, make that thru 6 innings. Fantastic! Starters helped sweep the Orioles to start this trip and helped enable us to split in Seattle and just might prevent a sweep here in Minnesota. And, I'm not making excuses for the lineup, but sometimes the opposing pitchers are a factor in how well our guys hit. And sometimes they hit it hard but right to someone. Twins have hit some liners today--all but one caught.
  3. Right people ain't been doing so hot either--lately. Betts and Leon have the rbi's. Everybody else has left people of base.
  4. So Mookie did get the word. Nice.
  5. Stunningly good. What could be better than a 1-2-3 inning right after grabbing the lead? Well done, Porcello. Someone else pointed out that following Wright is advantageous for whoever gets that start because the other teams timing will be off. Maybe Porcello benefits from pitching after two lefty starters. Nah.
  6. If Porcello can hang tight thru the 6th, this game might be winnable. Then, when the team returns to Boston, we can have a parade and give him the keys to the city. Words from a desperate fan.
  7. On top of which, I am fine with out catching tandem. Nice when they come thru on offense, however. More than nice.
  8. Is that the bottom of the order wreaking all the havoc? Mookie, Beni, and JDM, please take note. That ain't Bob Gibson on the mound, but a pale imitation.
  9. Devers is a sucker for a high fast ball.
  10. A man on base! A man on base! Moreland magnificently did not swing at four balls.
  11. Forget the two-seamer. That slider is absolutely destroying our lineup.
  12. This visit to Minnesota is proving to be a real downer which could become a sweep. Basically, no hitting. And we can't blame that on injuries because Mookie and JDM are both healthy (for all we know).
  13. The uproar is over the bottom of the order, but I'm not seeing much from the top of the order either, and I mean Mookie, Beni, JDM, Moreland, and Bogie.
  14. Our guys are doing their level best to get Gibson a nice pay raise or something. They look worse, so far, the second time through the lineup. Beni strikes out swinging at 3 straight sliders!!!???? Gibson's throwing a lot of low pitches and some of them are out of the zone but they are swinging anyway. Must be a heckuva slider.
  15. So far, all fastballs, 2 seam and 4 seam. One single and one line drive out. And a 4 pitch walk to JDM. 2 on, 1 out, and GIDP time at the old hacienda.
  16. Thanks for the reminder, moonslav. I agree the options are limited. Nevertheless, silliness has broken out all over the trade thread. I am also prepared to keep rooting for the team we have. I agree with you Devers will get better and that it's still possible for JBJ to get hot. The catching is about defense and helping the pitchers--hitting is a bonus when it happens. I'm OK with Holt/Nunez at 2B.
  17. Maybe 3 days ago the cry went forth, "the Sox can't hit lefties." Well, now they can't hit righties either. But maybe the Twins can't either because here comes Porcello. vs. righty Kyle Gibson, who last time out went 7 and gave up 1 run vs. the Guardians.
  18. Good analysis and succinct.
  19. I try not to agree with you, but this time I have to about last night. As for DD getting another Cora another offensive weapons, I think his options are limited. Nevertheless, I am about to go to the trade thread and admit that a deal does make sense at this point.
  20. That's close to where I am although I don't see tiredness as a factor this early in the season. One new thought I've had is that the 12 position players kind of underscore why Devers and especially JBJ stay in the lineup. I think most of us are fine with Devers, but many have wondered about JBJ's weak hitting and Cora apparently believing in him or trusting him or whatever. The real explanation is there are no other options. Your 2d point about Cherington and the current salary situation is of course right on target. It's why HanRam is gone and why Castillo can't be brought up and why we are still paying Pablo, etc. Cora is basically playing the cards he was dealt.
  21. The overwhelming majority of MLB teams carry 13 position players and 12 pitchers. Since Travis went back to Pawtucket 10 days ago, the Sox have carried 12 position players and 13 pitchers. I don't think this is because of some overwhelming need for good arms, but, more likely, because of a dearth of good bats in the Sox system. I was completely in favor of dumping HanRam--the sooner the better. Now I'm not so sure. The real point is that the bench right now consists of Leon, Swihart, and Holt--or maybe Holt/Nunez. Swihart's OPS right now is under .400 and his OWAR is -.7. Leon is the backup catcher who I think catches about 1/5 or 2/5 of the games.
  22. You're darn right he screwed up. Sale had no business pitching in the 6th--he was done after the 5th--and Kelly had no business pitching in the 8th. When will Cora learn to make good judgments about the pitching staff? For that matter, he also removed Scott in the 8th right after he got that out. The Twins got all their hits last night off righty pitchers and exactly 0 hits off of lefty pitchers.
  23. Scott is no babe in the woods. He's been here before and he's good against lefty bats and was going against the bottom of the order. Plus he actually pitched better--with those two walks but also an out--in the 8th than Sale did in the 6th and a whole lot better than Kelly (a walk, a double, a triple, and no outs) did in the same darn inning. If you blame Cora for sending Scott out for the 8th, you also have to blame him for sending Sale out in the 6th and Kelly out in the 8th.
  24. Meh. Scott pitched better in the 8th than Sale did in the 6th and way, way better than Kelly in the 8th. If you blame one of those guys, you have to blame all of them--and the lack of hitting. Scott is 28 and has been pitching in MLB since 2016. He's been good against lefty bats and was sent out there to do his job, nothing more and against the bottom of the order at that. On top of which, we weren't preserving a lead but simply hoping to score again and maybe win.
  25. No way am I going for the price on Lynn. All my money's on Price.
