  1. My goodness, I completely forgot the sheer pleasure of second guessing DD. Before the fact--the actual season--I was fine with not re-signing Kelly or Kimbrel. Kelly because he was so up and down last year (but super in the postseason)--and now stinks. And Kimbrel because he wants too much money for reliever who won't do windows. The bullpen doesn't look so hot now, but earlier they were pretty good and way, way, way, way, way, way better than our putrid rotation--you know, the guys with the huge salaries.
  2. Poodles throughout the Red Sox Nation can rejoice at the valuable social service provided by talksox.
  3. Reverse mojo advocate. Coming from a Yankee fan with, what, 27 World Series wins stashed away? We Sox fans come by our pessimism honestly. I lived thru 64 of those 86 years (but was only a fan for 55 of them). And oldtimer and bosoxmal go back further than I. Of course, the John Henry era has kind of changed things, but I personally have found it difficult to give up old habits of dour pessimism. It's never too soon to push the panic button, shout to the world that the sky is falling, etc. Failing that, it also helps to go after individual players, the rotation, the bullpen, the outfield, the salaries, etc.
  4. Nice. The two obvious perps in last night's lineup were JBJ and Vazquez, but both got 2 hits. Of course, there is the other meaning for "hit."
  5. You could well be right. I never did like POM, but those numbers from last night don't lie. My guess is you only need the fingers on one hand to count the number of times he went six shutout innings for the Sox.
  6. Yes, I am talking about the Sox and this season--and more specifically about an obvious trend on the Mike Grace Memorial game threads. Quite simply, the game threads for losses are longer, often much longer, than those for wins. Can you possibly imagine how boring--with a possibility of outright abandonment--talksox would be right now if the Sox were a boring 18-5 instead of the far more delectable 9-14?
  7. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.
  8. This one looks pretty much in the bag.
  9. 3-0 Sox in the 5th. ERod looking very good.
  10. Is Bobby Orr still playing?
  11. Tyler Ross (R, ERA 3.38) vs. Eduardo Rodriguez (L, ERA 7.20) Beni LF Betts RF Moreland 1B JDM DH Bogie SS Devers 3b Chavis 2b JBJ CF Vazquez C Four lefty and five righty bats vs. righty Ross. I can't think of any good missing lefty bats not in this lineup (and not on the DL). The problem remains the pitching staff with their 2d worst ERA in MLB. Also of interest, however, is that the team OPS is 22d in MLB and last night the lineup went 1 for 12 with RISP in a 4-2 game (Moreland and JDM each left 6 runners on). Weird factoid. The Sox currently have the same winning percentage (3-5) at home as they do on the road (6-10). That's not so weird. What is weird is that all four of the other AL East teams actually have worse home records than road records. The most dramatic are the Orioles--2-10 at home and 7-6 on the road.
  12. JDM really blew that one. If Mookie had been in RF, that runner would have been out at the plate. When will Cora learn that JDM is the worst right fielder in the history of MLB?
  13. 2 runs in 5 innings was part of the problem? Did you stop watching the game after the 5th inning? Would you like a briefing on what happened after Sale left the game?
  14. Ace went 5 and gave up 2. Bullpen so far has gone 3+ and given up 5 with 2 on and no outs in the 9th, so I'm having a hard time blaming Sale. And the lineup has 3 runs against the 5th best staff in MLB. All in all, I have to say this one is on the bullpen.
  15. Going into this game, the Tigers staff had the 5th best ERA in MLB--3.25. For awhile, the Sox ERA was double that.
  16. Back to the subject of Chris Sale. I've alway felt he relies too much on K's on not enough on pitching to contact, which this guy Boyd for the Tigers seems very good at. That said, 2 runs in 5 innings is not half bad, but the pen is worse than bad.
  17. We need to hear from the CERA uber alles crowd for a comment on the magnificent job Leon is doing behind the plate.
  18. Not when they are pounding Brewer, it isn't.
  19. See that double off of Mookie? JBJ would have caught that 95% of the time--blindfolded. When is Cora going to learn no one but no one can play CF like the great Jackie Bradley Jr.
  20. Wrong! Sale looks terrible, awful, disgusting. Too many pitches.
  21. Didn't an Oakland pitcher get a no-hitter against last year's lineup?
  22. Might as well shut this thread down because the game situation is hopeless--no JBJ in CF. I read recently that, had JBJ not been in center field for the Rays, they would have swept us.
  23. This still appears to be the lineup for game 1 today.
