Meh. Mookie's SB's are down even more. He used to lead the team in steals. So far this year he's attempted 3 and was caught once. Beni has attempted 4 and been caught once. -

I didn't. My bad. But, while I will occasion attack Beni or almost anyone on a bad night, in the aggregate i'm not that concerned even though it sure does look as though he has slowed down. I will almost guarantee, however, that, if Beni regains his speed and goes wild on the basepaths, he will immediately be labelled stupid for any mistake he makes. Speaking of the effects of gravity, I think it is fair to say that neither Devers nor Vazquez will ever compete in the featherweight class--heavyweight, most likely. Yet Devers leads the team by a bunch with steal attempts, 8, and caught stealing, 3. And Vazquez has the same number of attempted steals, 3, as probably the fastest baserunner and formerly best base-stealer on the team, Betts. Beni, FWIW, has 3 steals and was caught once. Mookie stole 2 and was caught once. JBJ has stolen 3 of 3 and Nunez 4 of 5. -

This is one nutty thread. I myself have criticized Beni this year and do think he has slowed. Shame on him. That said, it is not, as the thread title implies, a grave matter--at least, not for the team. First and foremost, other OPS are also down from last year: Mookie, JDM, and Bogaerts--and theirs are down more than Beni's, which was .830 last year and is .803 this year. On the other hand, Devers and Vazquez are way up, as is Moreland. Best of all, Chavis OPS is .986 vs. Kinsler's .604 last year. The only real liability in the lineup is JBJ, and we all know that, as does Cora. Nunez and Pearce are way down too--which is why they are on the bench most of the time. But Sandy Leon's OPS is an almost respectable (for a catcher) .627. Thus are the Sox currently 4th in MLB in runs scored vs. last year's 1st. In other words, the hitting is not the problem and this thread to me is a tempest in a teapot. -
Big win. Lineup, bullpen fix Cora’s bad decisions in the 7th. Great GWRBI by Chavis and equally great double by a Bogie.

Cora should have sent Walden out to pitch the 7th. Maybe he’s losing his touch.

Perhaps, but it is stupid to manage as though your only choices are to keep a tired starter in or to bring in a guy who pitched two innings last night. This is on Cora.

This loss will be on Cora, pure and simple. Horrible decision to leave ERod out there. Or even to send him out to pitch the 7th.

Which is basically irrelevant. They won game 1 and have a very good shot at winning tonight. Down by 3 but bases loaded and no one out in the 7th.

I said I think he "bulked up," but I'm not sure that bears scrutiny. He does seem slower, however.

Disagree vehemently. With Chavis and Vazquez both hitting well, this lineup will be better than last year’s. With JBJ in the lineup, the Sox still have 8 good bats. Leon is good behind the plate and has an OPS over .650. Bullpen is ok too, just nit tonight. That doesn’t mean I’m not disgusted with this loss because I am.

Just a lot of bad stuff tonight. Mookie and Beni at bat. Two 2 run dingers off Sale and Workman. Brazier two incomprehensible walks in the 11th, then a hard single by someone hitting under .200. I do not for the life of me under all the griping about Chavis’s defense at 2b, which looked pretty solid tonight. And, you know, the fact that he is hitting up a storm, as remarkable as that is for a Sox second baseman, should not be held against him. One more thing. Beni looks slower this year—at the plate, on the basepaths, and in the field. Did his agent tell him to bulk up and get more dingers?

Mookie and Beni are for 8 with 5 k’s. Sox are lucky to have 3 runs.

Chavis for Bumgarner would be great for the Giants, idiocy by DD. Chavis has a better future, is under team control for a long time and therefore costs way less, and is less likely to get a serious injury. Oh, and he so far has been just what the doctor ordered for the Sox offense. Bumgarner will be just another arm who may or may not be able to handle lineups that include DH's instead of pitchers. In 2013 that other GM gave up Iglesias to get Peavy, but already had two SS's, one of whom is now a mainstay on the Sox. The Sox currently have no backup for Chavis at 2B, and please don't tell me Nunez is--or Holt for that matter.

Could be right about Lynn. As for Bill Russell, I agree he was the greatest NBA title winner ever. He arrived in late 1956 after playing in the Melbourne Olympics and when the Celtics had Sharman and Cousy at the guards. Cousy had I believe been voted something like the best player of the first half of the 20th century, but couldn't win a title until Russell came along. When Cousy retired, he said he would not be missed as long as Russell stayed, and he was right. KC Jones stepped right in--not as good as Cousy, but good enough. And Sam Jones replaced Sharman--and so on. Russell was a great rebounder and defender and pretty effective on offense, but never as the primary scorer. Plus he was smart and very determined--and, for all we know, playing in front of racist fans (Russell says that) may have spurred him on. I could be wrong, but I believe that the Celtics never sold out the Garden during all those seasons Russell played. Not so the Bruins. Not so the Sox. -

I defer to no one on complaining about JBJ, who I don't think is the best Sox CF ever or the best CF in the AL or MLB today. Plus his hitting is just miserable. All that said, right now he's not a bad fit as the Sox starting CF because the three subs are Leon, Pearce, and Nunez, none of whom are hitting well. Plus JBJ in CF solidifies a pretty solid defensive outfield and lets JDM be the DH. Most times, Cora can go with 8 other guys over .800 OPS (Beni, Betts, JDM, Moreland, Bogie, Devers, Chavis, and Vazquez) in the lineup plus JBJ with his miserable .450 OPS. When Holt gets back, maybe it's a different story, but right now I'm fine with JBJ in CF despite by attacking him continually on this very thread.
