The more interesting question is whether the Yankees would make the offer. Doing so would save a lot of money, but Yankees fans like their stars even when they can't hit. I knew a Yankees fan who swore Ellsbury was an OK deal--before he missed his last 3 seasons.

Last 3 innings are almost like a new/different ball game. Bullpen vs bullpen.

WEEI guys think yes because the bullpen has been used hard in this series. Plus ERod has been pretty darn good, your commentary notwithstanding. ERod at 96 pitches and could come out for the 7th.

WEEI guys say opposing teams this year do way, way better the third time ERod goes thru their lineup.

Probably should have kept throwing the changeup which was working.

He is doing anything but "pound the strike zone." He's been behind in a lot of counts. What he has done is avoid throwing many pitches right down the middle. Plus he has worked the corners. Plus he has mixed up his pitches and kept the batters off balance.

I'm following the game with gameday, mlb.tv, and on TBS and see the pitches in that order: gameday first, then mlb.tv, then cable (TBS).

Pivetta and Eovaldi notwithstanding--at least not in their last starts. Pivetta was going ape right up until Cora pulled him with 2 outs in the 7th. But you are so right about Cole, Richards, and a bunch of others.

Nice play, but looks like he was safe. Well hit ball against a good changeup. Out!!! Quick inning for ERod, who could go six.

I believe in CERA (catcher ERA) and have to say this season overall I think Vazquez has done solid work, as Wong did last night. I honestly don't think Higashioka is helping Cole that much today.

ERod effective, also cautious--56% strikes. Cole, on the other hand is throwing caution to the winds. That's three dingers and five runs so far.

So much for my theory about Cole's fastball. It was, in my defense, right down the middle. So moonslav called this when he said mismatches like these can lead to surprises. If you are a Yankee fan, you can't be happy.
