  1. Big win last night that needed the best efforts of Sale, Whitlock, and Ottavino. Tonight it's ERod, who has pitched well in 4 of his last 5 games. 3 weeks ago in Boston he went 5.1 innings against the Rays, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs while getting 8 K's. Lotta guys out, mostly from covid--and including relievers Sawamura, Taylor, Barnes, Perez, Hernandez, and Rios.
  2. Our Sox will go as far as their pitching will take them. The Yankees, Rays, Astros, Chisox, and A's all have better pitching. Indeed, it's to Cora's credit that the Sox are 2 games ahead of the A's for one wild card slot and 2 behind the Yankees for the other.
  3. Ahem. I have always believe good pitching beats good hitting. Tonight the Sox went with their three best pitchers--Sale, Whitlock, and Ottavino. The Rays always go with good pitching, but tonight Vazquez and Duran came through for 3 badly needed rbi's.
  4. Sox still up 2 on the A's for the 2d wild card. So all you naysayers--and you know who you are and I'm not afraid to name names (like Maxbialystock)--need to admit you don't know squat about this team this year. A pretty big win, all things considered. As much as I enjoy giving credit to Vazquez for those big hits and rbi's, my biggest praise has to go to Chris Sale for pitching 6 big innings and giving up 2 runs, 1 of which was thanks to the Sox offensive defense. This was a gritty performance on a night when he didn't have his best stuff, when the defense was not so hot, and when the umpire was hostile (albeit unintentionally so). And he did it against the best team in the AL on their home field
  5. When the Sox went up 1 in the top of the 9th, they showed Ottavino warming up, and I was happy because Whitlock gave up a double in the 7th and again in the 8th. It took good defensive plays to prevent the Rays from scoring.
  6. Fastball right down the middle for strike 3 on Lopez, who also has an error.
  7. There you have it. Vazquez was out at home because he's actually as slow as a catcher (and doesn't know it). Devers had exactly the same play and scored standing up.
  8. Vazquez was entitled to that K and he was right to recognize the 3d strike was just a very good slider at the top of the zone.
  9. I'd like to give a big shout out to JDM for no GIDP. He is a team player all the way.
  10. Nope. It was a good pitch. JDM was doomed anyway.
  11. That right there is way I think it is foolish to say hitters can tell balls from strikes on pitches close to the margins of the strike zone. That was a strike, and JDM whined.
  12. I agree the Rays got more calls and that Sale got screwed a couple of times. But I think the defense was the bigger problem.
  13. Really dumb. Devers hit right into that shift.
  14. Yes, but sometimes the odds can be, well, odd.
  15. It sure looks as though that balk was because Whitlock keep shaking off Vazquez's signals. All's well that ends well. Except ain't nothin ended yet. Whitlock has 2 scoreless innings, but the Rays have a bottomless well of good relievers.
  16. Cash needs to check his computer program that says you will always score from 3b with 1 or no outs.
  17. That's the 2d double off Whitlock plus no K's. But thank goodness he is rested. I mean, that's the real goal, isn't it? Rested pitchers. Barnes really needed a rest and now should get 2 full weeks. Good system.
  18. That call against Renfroe was close enough. Plus tonight ain't his night.
  19. Far from beautiful because he didn't have his best stuff. But he sure was gritty and definitely did not let the weak defense get him down.
  20. Cora needs to protest. Robertson actually threw strikes to Arauz, which is just not fair. And yes, I do remember the grand slam when all the Sox needed was a sac fly or a single.
  21. Agree. Rough first 2 batters, but then he was fine, and he is easily the Sox best reliever. No one else is close. He also does windows (2, even 3 innings).
  22. Rays 9th bat hits a perfect sac fly to deep CF to move runner to 3b. And Vazquez makes the Sox defensive play of the game by catching a short hop throw by Devers and tagging the runner from 3b out. Despite the double and the sac fly, a scoreless inning for Whitlock. So, good on him. Plus no Barnes.
  23. Sure glad Cora took Sale out. Whitlock looks great out there if you ignore a double off his first pitch.
