  1. Not to change the subject--again--but, while I am not much of a Brasier fan, I thought he looked excellent last night and exactly what the Sox needed in the 5th inning with Mets runners on 2d and 3d and just one out. I could be wrong, but I believe Cora these days is less patient with his starters--although he did leave ERod in in the 4th with 2 on and just 1 out and with 2 Mets runs already in--but apparently willing to give almost anyone a shot at relieving. Last night he used 5 relievers--including Brasier and Davis when the game was still close--to cover 4.2 innings.
  2. I agree ERod is worth defending. I don't know whether he will be worth a long-term contract, but right now, Sep 22, he is very much needed because he is demonstrably our 3d best starter. In 4 September starts, he has had one bad one, giving up 6 to the Rays, but also went 6 shutout innings vs the Rays, 6 with just 1 earned run vs. the Mariners, and last night 4.1 innings while giving up just 2 runs when he didn't have his good changeup. Indeed, the 4th inning last night should have been cataclysmic. ERod gave up 3 walks and 2 singles and 2 runs, but was saved by that great throw by Kike to nail that guy going home on a single. That gave ERod his first out and nobody on 3b. After that, with men still on 1st and 2d, he got the last 2 outs on an easy fly to CF and a grounder to Dalbec. Pretty gritty in my book.
  3. ERod does not have a great repertoire, which is why he can't "attack the strike zone" the way folks want him to. He does not have a great curve or slider, so he relies a lot on fastballs and cut fastballs and hitting the corners--and that changeup, which can be really good when it is working. Last night it clearly was not. Thus the scene in the dugout after he gave up 2 runs in the top of the 4th on 2 singles and 3 walks--which actually could have been a lot worse without that great play by Kike--where he is shaking his head while talking to Cora.
  4. He's made a lot of good moves all season long, especially with the bullpen. Last night his timing with ERod and Brasier was exquisite--and greatly helped by that terrific throw and outfield assist by Kike. He's also been pretty good with his lineups, substitutions, and pinch-hitters. His lineups have been tested by the simple fact that his best hitting lineups have not been all that great on defense, which has in turn undercut the pitching. Right now with Kike in CF (where he belongs) and Iglesias at 2b and a very much improved Dalbec at 1b, he has probably the best defense he's had all season.
  5. CPA's are grist for our financial and economic mill--more necessary, even in our litigious society, than lawyers. My son-in-law is one. In any case, kudos for staying focused on what's important.
  6. Lou merloni says erod is tipping his changeup
  7. Excuse me! Excuse me? Who wants a stinking hitting SS? This entire site has griped most of the season about Bogey's defense, so let's get rid of him. Good GM's know that defense is what wins games. Hitters are a dime a dozen.
  8. I'm not much of a Joe Maddon fan either. Iggy has definitely impressed at 2b. Too bad it will be Arroyo in the postseason.
  9. That was some seriously bad s*** Robles was throwing in the 7th. 90 mph sliders and changeups.
  10. Verdugo, batting left vs. a righty pitcher, has swung at 2 of 3 pitches, all of which were way out of the strike zone. OK, he lined out to CF on a splitter near the middle of the zone.
  11. So, there you have it. All the top of the order needed was a little heat from the maxatollah.
  12. I'd like to keep him, but the case against is pretty solid. On the other hand, I can see no reason to keep Bogey--not enough range. The Sox need a real SS!!!!
  13. Looked like Bogey swung under that sinker.
  14. Houdini had nothing on Alex Cora, who once again left in ERod when none of us would have and then pulled him at just the right moment so that Brasier could get the final 2 outs.
  15. Kike saves ERod in the 4th inning and ties the game in the bottom of the 5th!!!!
  16. ERod's miraculous start. He stinks up the place and still goes 4.1 giving up just 2 runs. Great throw by Kike and great relief by Brasier bails ERod out. Score is 2-1, folks. This game is definitely winnable. All it takes is for the top six hitters to, you know, actually hit the dadgum ball.
  17. Alonso of the Mets looked exactly like JDM on that slider away.
  18. Brasier stupidly throwing nothing but fastballs, which is working like gangbusters!!!!
  19. He was unbelievably lucky to get through 4.
  20. Mets overall have significantly better pitching than the Sox, who have significantly better hitting. As the saying goes, good pitching usually beats good hitting. The Mets have been helped by the fact that ERod just stunk tonight. He said as much to Cora when he was in the dugout after the 4th inning.
  21. Some slider ERod has. He throws it to a lefty batter and gets a hard hit single.
  22. 20-20 hindsight. Defense-wise, JDM in LF has not been costly. And Schwarber and JDM both have better OPS's than Renfroe. That said, I would have kept the regular outfield and benched JDM against this righty.
  23. Disagree. Leave him where he is so he keeps hitting. Plus his chances of being brought home are better when he is followed by Vazquez and Iglesias. Great baserunning by Vazquez. Very opportunistic because the Mets didn't have anyone covering 3b. Oops. I guess they did. And Vazquez remains one of the most clueless baserunners in Sox history.
  24. Dalbec, righty vs. righty gets his second hit, a long, long double to CF. One has to wonder what is the problem with Schwarber, Devers, and Verdugo.
