    One amazing game--thus am I responding to my first page gloom and doom. This was the kind of win moonslav says to look for because it happened when least expected. We had family over for the 4th, so I missed big chunks of it, but the box score tells the tale: out of nowhere the bullpen, especially Crawford, pitched an absolute gem when one was sorely needed. I would say that Cora's managing was masterful, which it was, but Crawford went way beyond what we had any right to expect. 2d time Arroyo starts at SS and again is solid in the field and excellent at the plate. Wow. And the lineup did get those 2 runs, which were all they needed although the 2 in the 8th were sweet. It is still daunting that Sale, Eovaldi, Whitlock, Wacha, and Hill are on the IL with no guaranteed date of return for any of them. Thus the mantra: one game at a time.

    Sale, Whitlock, Eovaldi, Wacha, and Hill are on the IL. That leaves Pivetta, newbie Winckowski (who's looking pretty decent), and newbie Seabold (might be OK) to fill a five man rotation with no days off. Meanwhile, the boo birds on talksox insist that Cora only send out relievers who are guaranteed to shut down the opposing team--all this during a 17 game stretch without a break.

    Actually, I think injuries to the rotation--Sale, Eovaldi, Whitlock, Wacha, and Hill are on the IL--makes it really hard for the Sox to compete. Sale has at least recently pitched in AA ball. The other guys are just throwing off the mound, waiting to throw off the mound, or whatever. The Sox rotation right now: Pivetta, two rookies--Winckowski, Seabold--and two players to be named later, like Davis.

    During the Toronto series, I was encouraged. That went away during the Wrigley field series, when the hitters didn't, Wacha and Hill joined Eovaldi and Whitlock on the IL, the defense looked awful, and the bullpen was heavily used in the first 3 games of 17 straight without a break. Oh, and the guys already on the IL are not coming back as soon as we hoped. So here come the Rays, right after taking 3 straight from the Jays, with solid pitching and defense and maybe an offense that's hitting again.

    Actually, it's 17 straight games with no days off before the ASG and another 17 after. Thus Cora's abortive attempt to get Robles back into the mix. Meanwhile the lineup's big three--JDM, Bogey, and Devers--are struggling, which puts pressure on the rest of the lineup as well as the pitching.

    Normally, I would point to the standings and how the Rays .544 winning percentage puts them just 3.5 games ahead of Seattle. But a couple of days ago I said that the entire AL East is tougher than all other MLB divisions, mostly because of the Yankees, but also because the Rays, Jays, and Sox all have winning records despite playing the Yankees a lot (Sox not yet, but soon).

    7 stitches, day to day. Also, I don't think the Cubs baserunner was as vicious as Machado was. Looks like Bogey was trying to make a play and his knee was in front of the bag. All the more credit to him for getting the out. Wacha reported a "heavy arm" and might not start tomorrow. Might be Kutter Crawford. Whitlock and Sale both at least a week away, Eovaldi longer. Kike could start minor league rehab in a week. Hill could take a month.

    Did the commentators say anything about that spikes up slide into 2b that injured Bogey? Same exact thing Machado did to Pedroia.

    Back to the bullpen. With Houck and Whitlock back, plus Schreiber, Davis, Dieckman, and Sawamura, I have more confidence in them right now than the lineup which has stopped hitting and fielding. Decent rotation, but riddled with injuries--Sale, Eovaldi, and Hill.

    Lately the Sox seem to have perfected the swing plane that leads to long outs. They lead MLB in doubles, which is great, but . . .

    I think Fenway Park is one of the most photogenic ballparks in America, but I disliked it intensely when I watched a game from the right field side. Rotten sight lines--but still expensive.

    Just like the Jays, the Cubs hitters have gotten good at hitting away from the bold shifts. Sox not so much. They prefer to smack the ball hard right to someone.

    Absolutely true. And he's done well in the leadoff spot. Wild applause. But that comes at a price.

    That throw from CF missed 2b and home plate. Duran place CF like the headless horseman.

    Actually, Dalbec's is the new bat to replace JDM, so he did the JDM thing--GIDP.
