  1. Yeah. That's why the Yankees never refer to those 27 WS wins and why nobody gives a crap that John Henry has brought 4 WS wins to Boston after some insignificant and, really, unimportant period when they didn't win the WS. I do agree teams can get hot in the postseason, but crapshoot it is not. Last year the Sox crunched the Yankees best starter in the wild card, then beat the 100 win Rays 3 games to 1 in the ALDS. The Astros were simply better in the ALCS.
  2. splendidsplinter is the man, Texas is the right team, Pivetta is the right starter, the lineup is solid, and the bullpen terrifies me.
  3. Rod Serling would love this--straight out of the twilight zone. In other words, you blew my mind.
  4. Interesting. If the Sox keep Sale and Bello, they just need to be worth $26M. Bello was pretty good in his last and at Worcestor, and Sale is very competitive except when he is recovering from elbow, rib, pinky, wrist, and other broken stuff.
  5. I did not mean to imply Schreiber's solid year has been a fluke. I'm just saying it's one year. I agree he has good stuff and pretty good command. He's pitched 53.2 innings with a 2.18 ERA, which is pretty darn solid.
  6. Nothing unfair in what you opine. Boston ain't Tampa, and Bloom must adjust. What we don't know is what guidance JH has given him. For example, I just read that the Mets owner has said he's reluctant to go over $300M for salaries. What John Henry will underwrite is especially important now because Bogey and especially Devers want big contracts at the same time the pitching needs rebuilding after a season with the 2d worst team ERA in the AL. At the same time building a good farm system is also important.
  7. Pham LF Verdugo RF Bogey SS Devers 3B JDM DH Story 2B Kike CF Arroyo 1B Wong C Seven right bats against Texas lefty starter Keuchel, who might not last long.
  8. Tonight's lineup has the infield I preferred and 3 of the outfielders and JDM as the DH. Wong will catch.
  9. I don't like his defense, but would not argue with continuing to play him. I'm just saying the four best available outfielders are Dugo, Refsnyder, Kike, and Pham. Pham and Dugo are hitting, but not so good on defense. Refsnyder can hit and defend (however, see below). Kike is the best defender, but not hitting--yet. In order, the outfield WAR's are Dugo +0.9, Refsnyder +0.8, Pham +0.4, and Kike +0.3. Their DWAR's are Kike +0.5, Pham -0.2, Refsnyder -0.3, and Dugo -1.0.
  10. And the night before.
  11. I’m for Arroyo at 1b, Story 2b, Bogey SS, Raffy 3b, and an outfield of Dugo, Kike, Pham, and/or Refsnyder. JDM at DH is almost OK.
  12. Sale and Paxton are both damaged goods and a gamble for 2023. I’m glad I don’t have to decide whether to let Paxton go or to make a Price-like deal on Sale. My guess is Bloom will also look at what else is out there in addition to evaluating what the Sox have now. To complicate things further, Bloom and JH have to decide about Bogey and Raffy. Moonslav has estimated significant salary space should be available, but I don’t think it’s enough to cover those two and to rebuild the rotation.
  13. This is Schreiber’s only good season ever. He’s been terrific vs lousy before, but he could be tiring and/or opposing teams are getting smarter. This is Whitlocks 2d season, and he too may be tiring. But he’s been excellent both years as the ace reliever. Houck just might have the best temperament to close. And Barnes should be able to contribute. Lest we forget. The rotation is also pretty important and there are a bunch of questions about next year.
  14. No, I did not expect the 9th inning rally. Yes, I though the Sox pitching stunk. Yes, I was pretty pissed at the 3d base coach, but he assumed a decent throw. Just imagine Devers going just a tad closer to home, a good throw, a quick pealk at 3d base, and wham, Devers gets picked off. Might I also add that it sure looked like the Sox hitters had that closer on the ropes--which Refsnyder confirmed. Devers got 2 doubles, Bogey two hits, and the Sox hitters overall had 13 hits including 4 doubles and a dinger for 9 runs. Who needs pitching?
  15. Actually, I'm glad he left because I think he's been the problem all along. It isn't bad juju in the locker room. It's all those bad internet vibes. Players are a lot more sensitive when we think.
  16. Boy, have you got that right. Even with a great 9th inning rally, there was hardly any reaction from the dugout. Just mopin and dopin. Worst morale and worst locker room I've seen in years. Of course, I've never actually seen a MLB locker room, let alone with the players in it ignoring their incompetent manager. But I can imagine what it looks like. Starters drinking beer during the late innings.
  17. I love the movie's premise, but it gets that wrong. Howe was far more cooperative than painted. And GM's have no business in the locker room.
  18. A stunningly good at bat by Arroyo in the 8th with 2 on, 1 out. Those were all good pitches, including the one he hit for a single.
  19. Cheap shot. None of us know about the locker room. Plus who the heck cares? Games are not won in the freaking locker room. I have seen no lack of effort by anyone, including Hill. The Sox team ERA is 14th out of 15 AL teams. That's the problem. Plus the hitting cooled off in August--especially Raffy and JDM, but Bogey also struggled.
  20. Way too early, plus keeping just 5 means going out and getting 8 new arms. That's daunting.
  21. I don't think so. But Schreiber has already pitched more innings than in the rest of his career. Last year Whitlock pitched 73 innings, and he's there now despite time on the IL.
  22. Schreiber has the highest WAR in the bullpen at 2.0 and the best ERA, 2.22. But in August his ERA was 3.95.
  23. This has to be the worst Sox bullpen ever. Schreiber and Whitlock have been the two best, but Whitlock tried to give the away the game last night and Schreiber has done his level best to ensure both runners he inherited scored. Plus he needed 22 pitches, of which 9 were strikes.
