    Pivetta has a new/better breaking ball this year which really works. Also Sale has a cut fastball that’s more effective than his fastball. The cutter, slider, and his good changeup are his strength. Sox lineup is fine against weak pitching and supine against good pitching. Devers got screwed in that one at bat, but also looked awful in the one with bases loaded. Story and Duvall on the IL does not help.

    I doubt Duvall would have made a difference against the Rays. Against the Pirates the Sox scored 3 runs in 26 innings with Duvall. I won't say this is a weak Sox lineup, but will say the Rays excellent pitching made them look comatose tonight.

    Well, that was interesting. Sox kept in the game by excellent pitching supported by decent fielding, but the hitting just stunk to high even. Devers had the bases loaded and struck out looking, which kind of confirmed just how lousy the Sox hitting can be. Good game, but Rays win their 10th straight, 1-0.

    Game 1 looks like the Pirates series right after that 5 run first inning of the first game. Even with Duvall in the lineup, the Sox scored just 3 runs in the next 26 innings. Turner takes a fastball right down the middle for strike three.

    Yes, we all miss Duvall. But I simply do not believe he was magically going to nail Rays' pitching. In fact, before this game, the Rays demolished three different pitching staffs in 9 straight games--and the Sox pitching tonight is holding up awfully well.

    So, Dalbec for Casas. Before the season started, I would have bet on Casas to hit well this year. Shows what I know.

    Couldn't score???? Anybody who's gotten on base has celebrated afterward as though they'd hit a grand slam--and by "who" I mean Sox so-called hitters.

    Great 7 innings by the Sox pitching and, dare I say it, defense. Hitting, not so much. I rarely say this, but tonight the home plate ump has definitely given the close ones to Tampa and not to the Sox. However, even with that advantage, Tampa has not scored in 7 innings.

    Thanks. Based on the talksox commentary, I believe the Sox when they say they don't have an exact timetable for recovery. Tough break.

    Yep. Good field, no hit means "not in Boston." The Sox are fine with a good hitter who can also field, but hitting uber alles.

    Whoops. I wrote before reading moonslav's report. My guess on the x-ray report is that the Sox are deliberately withholding it.

    Used to be, "no news is good news," but not on something like this. Jarren Duran is reportedly on his way to or already in Tampa.

    Fair enough. One game at a time. Tampa has some great stats--pitching and hitting--to go with the 9-0 record, but they have played Washington, Detroit, and Oakland. Spotrac says the four lowest team payrolls in MLB belong to the Pirates, Rays, Orioles, and, at the bottom, the A's. Sox payroll has dropped to 14th and Detroit's is 19th. Here's another stunner. Of the Rays 9 straight wins, 6 have been at the Trop, where so far the averaged attendance--to watch the red hottest team in all of MLB--has been 17,945, ranked 26th. It should be 27th, but Toronto hasn't played a home game yet. Sox home attendance, also six games, is 17th--29,114.

    Very sensible. I'm with moonslav in thinking the pitching will in fact improve. Klubar and Sale both stunk in their first starts and then came right back with decent starts the second time around. I think they will be OK, but we'll just have to see. I see no hope for Crawford, but know both Whitcomb and Bello are on their way back and have pitched well against non-MLB lineups. I also have doubts about Houck and Pivetta, but both have had decent starts. Undercutting the pitching so far has been an absolutely dreadful defense who/which (Devers and McGuire) caused two of the four losses to date. Hernandez already has 3 errors at SS. On top of that, not much range in the outfield, nor especially good arms. Baserunning is also so-so. But, if the pitching--including an improved bullpen--and hitting are OK, the Sox could finish above .500.

    Meh. Think of it as a rain out without the hassle. I remember telling my wife that MLB teams always play on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays--and sometimes on Mondays and Thursdays. But of course every "rule" is made to be broken.

    To which "we" do you refer? I ask because the attendance for the final home game of the six game opening homestand was 24,477. Opening game a week earlier was 36,049. I freely admit I have whined a ton this season so far and vastly prefer moonslav's more upbeat attitude. But I got into the whiny habit during the last 54 years of the 86 year curse. Right now, I'm pretty happy with yesterday's win even though the defense continues to stink. The pitching could indeed be coming around, and the offense, except for those lousy 26 innings vs the Pirates, could be OK even though the 3, 4, and 5 batters (Turner, Yoshiba, and Duvall) are brand new. For that matter, none of Casas, Arroyo, and McGuire/Wong have been regulars before this season. The rotation has also been reconstructed--with probably more to come (Whitlock, Bello).
