  1. John Ford used to give Wayne a hard time about his lack of service because in fact Ford did serve and did go in harm's way. Ford didn't like McCarthy or his front man in Hollywood, Cecil B. Demille.
  2. For a movie to work it has to engage the audience, a perfect example of which is Bull Durham. Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig worked because of ALS and that speech at the end. Eight Men Out Worked because of the director/writer and telling the Black Sox Scandal story from the players perspective. That Williams was a terrific fisherman is nice to know, but not very engaging. Same for being a great hitter. Lots of baseball players served in World War II, but a movie about Ted would omit the fact that he tried like the dickens not to join up--he played the entire 1942 season. When he did join and became a pilot, he never saw combat. And he was not an ace in the Korean War. But the real problem with a Williams movie is coming up with a dramatic center. Few people know that the movie Patton succeeded because Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay--and wisely chose to lead with that speech by Patton, delivered wonderfully by George C. Scott (but without Patton's high squeaky voice). Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig is a boring movie right up until we found out he has ALS and then delivers that incredible speech at Yankee stadium. Nothing Williams did comes anywhere near that for dramatic impact.
  3. Both points are good. Sheriff pitched in both games, and Jansen was well rested before today. He should not have been tired. The problem these days is you can't be sure he will have good control or good stuff.
  4. Sheriff pitched in both games, and before today Jansen was well rested.
  5. True, but I had to look it up. To "shoot" a movie or a scene also means the physical parts of acting, directing, camerawork, etc. So, for example, High Noon was shot in about 2 months (late summer, early fall of 1951).
  6. I think Ted Williams was too complex a guy for Wayne to play. I also don't think his life was interesting enough to make into a movie.
  7. No run if Wong wasn't running his ass off from the get go.
  8. He certainly did. Now Bernardino gets a scoreless 7th. Dugo and Devers are both hitless.
  9. It was not, repeat not, "shot" in real time. Fred Zinnemann was great, but not that great. The time elapsed in watching the movie, 85 minutes, was the same amount of time as the time depicted in the movie.
  10. Crawford 3 innings, Garza 1.1, and Sherriff 1.2. Not exactly creme de la creme, but the Rays have just 2 runs in 6 innings.
  11. Tapia going for redemption. But Casas will have none of it.
  12. Neat. Don't forget Grace Kelly, who dropped one of the four.
  13. Well said. I was going berserk watching Sheriff.
  14. Two consecutive at bats, the second one very important, in which Tapia looks completely brain dead. In the second, he gets a fast ball down the middle and ignores it. Not to his taste. Then three straight curve balls in the dirt, all of which he swings at and misses. Then Casas, whom I have been beating up on, steps in and gets a triple, his 2d hit of the game.
  15. Glasnow is throwing some good stuff.
  16. Terrific at bat and double by Casas.
  17. Crawford is starting game 2. Not a bad choice, but chances are he won't go 5. Dugo Devers Yoshida DH Duran Tapia LF Casas 1b Reyes SS (!!!!) Valdez Wong
  18. Casas is 23, 6'4" and 255 freaking lbs, which to me means he is not serious about being a professional athlete. Because everyone else stunk at 1b last year and it looked as though he could hit, he was basically handed the job this year. And he hasn't done much with the opportunity because he's 1/3 into the season and has the lowest WAR on the team, -0.7. Nevertheless, it's clear Cora has instructions to give Casas every opportunity to show he can play--basically, hit--at this level. But two things could limit Casas's ownership of 1b this year if he doesn't improve his hitting. First is whether Bloom and especially John Henry want the Sox to get a wild card berth. If they do and Casas continues to have a negative WAR, he could sit more or go back to Worcester. Second is the return of Duvall, who will be the 4th outfielder along with Yoshida, Duran, and Dugo. Little doubt in my mind Duvall will play. If he's in the outfield, either Duran--who is hitting and playing better than Casas--sits or, more likely, Yoshida takes over at DH. If that happens, Cora ain't going to bench Turner so that Casas can play 1B.
  19. Glasgow vs. TBD I think it's Pivetta, but it could be Kluber or even Houck, who last pitched Monday. A shout out to moonslav who has been the most upbeat of all of us this season. He has said repeatedly these guys can come back from deficits, and today they did it against the best team in MLB--who, I hasten to add, are not playing in the freaking Trop today. He has also said the bullpen's pretty good--and boy were they today. Huge win, very uplifting for us fans--and for the players too. It also occurs to me that 4 games in 3 days presents some special managerial challenges, and I think Cora gives us an edge in that department.
  20. Good description, especially on the pitching. That freaking rally was what this "no name" lineup has pulled off several times this season.
  21. God, he was so great and easily the gutsiest closer I ever saw. 88 mph 4 seamer, when he was feeling really strong. Kimbrel stunk in the 2018 postseason, but still got a bunch of saves. Jansen looked really good just now.
  22. Thanks. When you say it, it makes sense. When the team says it, I think they are hiding something. No question we need good Sale this year. Plus he's great fun to watch.
  23. You and Tedballgame are both right, of course. I wanted Martin because he was pitching well and I just want to win game 1. Game 2 is centuries away with its own dynamics. Plus Jansen makes me nervous. Except right now, despite the double, he looks like the Jansen from early in the season. Sox win, and I could not be happier that Cora sent the right guys out throughout this game.
