  1. First of all, Steven Wright expects to be healthy for spring training and in that case would be next in line to start. If we need to move Eovaldi to closer, it's quite possible that Wright pitches at a high level. Second, I'm really not sold on Kimbrel's continued success. If the Sox do sign him, they need to go as few years as possible. Third, I also think it's possible that at some point Chris Sale transitions to closer. He just doesn't seem to have starting pitcher stamina. He looked great in the last inning of the World Series. Fourth, if Barnes or Brasier does make a successful closer, then we need to give larger setup roles to Johnson, Velazquez, Wright, and Workman. I think it's quite possible they can be effective at middle relief.
  2. I just want to do away with the Collective Bargaining Payroll limit altogether. Teams that finish lower in the standings already get the better draft picks. Teams that sign other team's free agents lose a draft pick. There should be parity enough there. If a city has a team full of great young talent (after finishing last for a few years) and they jump into the thick of the playoff chase, but fans don't show and the tv ratings don't improve, why should they get money from teams located in cities where the fans actually care?
  3. I'm really quite happy the Sox aren't in the market for Harper or Machado. When does Trout hit free agency? That will be something!!!
  4. I'm looking at baseball-reference and it says Bryce Harper had just 1.3 WAR last year; 4.2 offensive and -3.2 defensive. Wow I did not expect an overall number so low for him. In fact his odd numbered WAR seasons are: 5.2 (rookie of the year), 1.1, 1.5, 1.3.
  5. Isn't Steven Wright ahead of Johnson & Velazquez in starter depth?
  6. I have a tough time judging Ben because he made some really good moves and some colossal blunders.
  7. Or sign a closer (if one is still available!), and then make a salary dump trade. I'm not sure who can be traded who would make a difference other than Porcello, and I'd hate to see him go but I still think we could win given our starting pitching depth.
  8. Wow that's sobering. Also neat to see how Orlando Cabrera turned into Jacoby Ellsbury who turned into Michael Kopech who turned into Chris Sale.
  9. Andrew Miller goes to the Cardinals. Also wanted him. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/25587776/st-louis-cardinals-sign-lefty-reliever-andrew-miller-two-year-deal
  10. I think a 6 man rotation is a great idea to start the season with, and maybe also for August to give pitchers a little breather.
  11. 2.56 ERA last season so maybe he's still a young 35 What do you think it would take to pry Leclerc away from the Rangers? 1.56 ERA in 57 innings pitched, WHIP of just 0.85, 85 strikeouts to just 25 walks. I want I want I want!!!
  12. Darn; would have liked to get him.
  13. Was Dave Dombrowski's finest moment getting Chris Sale? I have to say, I remember an exchange a few years back with my older brother, and I said the Red Sox should go all out in trying to trade for Chris Sale and he said they'd never get him. And maybe at the time he was right, that they didn't have the pieces, but I was shocked when Dave pulled that one off. Reminded me of the trade for Pedro Martinez, which equally shocked me.
  14. Probably best he didn't sign that $15 million per year extension.
  15. Oh I see. All I recalled from him in 2004 was mostly sitting out injured.
  16. Ah, I see the whole picture now. The Sox offered Nomar a 4 year, $15 million per year extension and he turned it down. Then got injured. So the Sox looked into trying to trade him away and bring in A-Rod, which hurt his feelings, and his play suffered for it. Yeah, apparently good timing indeed on the trade. I disagree that he could hit up until the trade, because my memory is that from Aug 1 2003 onwards, he stopped hitting.
  17. I remember that now, and I can sympathize. That said, I'll never understand what happened in 2003 to Nomar. He was an MVP candidate up until about August 1st, then he just sucked. He was really struggling in the playoffs. Luckily we had Todd Walker to pick up the slack. Speaking of which, there's another guy I was upset left and didn't return. Now I'm trying to remember who played 2nd base in 2004. I'm tempted to look it up....
  18. I don't even remember what Nomar was so upset about.
  19. I remember those! My favorite is the last one.
  20. Seriously! Manny Ramirez has to be the most common first & last baseball name ever
  21. The sentimentalist in me likes to see our stars retire in our uniform. I wouldn't want to see Pedroia go play anywhere else for instance. I was that way with Boggs. I was fully aware he hit .250 something in his last year here. I also recall he got laser eye surgery and improved the next year because of it. It was just when I started watching the Sox so I didn't care, but I have friends upset that Dwight Evans played his last year somewhere else (Orioles I think). Nomar, however, is an idiot for not taking that $60 million extension. Of course it is up to the player to decide they want to end their career here too. I agree letting Pedro go to the Mets and Ellsbury to the Yankees were the proper decisions. And Jason Bay, good point! His skills evaporated the moment he left.
  22. It's not just the deals you make, but the deals you don't make. Not only did Ben sign HRam and Pablo, but he didn't sign Scherzer and Nelson Cruz that offseason (if memory serves correctly). Of course for all I know, both of those guys had something against coming to Boston, but on the surface it looks like a total whiff.
  23. Of your six, 5 were before my time I've heard the names, but I got into the Sox in the late 80s. I was so mad when they didn't resign Beltre and traded away Rizzo. I remember thinking, "You're going after the wrong Adrian. The one you want is already here."
  24. That's an interesting topic. Here are my saddest organization losses since I started watching the Sox: Jon Lester Adrian Beltre Nomar (but I understood it) Mo Vaughn Roger Clemens Wade Boggs
