  1. Spring..... last years spring? He definitely was the ace last year the first half. But that was his ceiling I believe hovering just close to a 4 era. I dig Wright as a piece waiting in the wings if or when or when almost surely someone goes down. But I think you have to go with Buch, and Kelly cause when they are good, they have shown they are top notch, not just adequate, they are top 10 of the league starters when they are on.
  2. It's too bad they didn't start him more last year before he got hurt to see what he could do. They had the opportunity.
  3. If Kelly, Buch and E-Rod together fire on all cylinders, we have a crazy good rotation. This team does have some real potential for greatness.
  4. I would say if Kelly does as well as he did the last part of the season, with the addition of Price, this year we would win the ALE. Kelly would be that number two everyone wanted DD to get. Heck, during that stretch he was pitching like an Ace. It's a tough call with him. I was in the camp of making him a reliever, but a 9 game stretch I don't think can be considered a fluke and I think you have to see if you can get that back. Kelly's upside is much better than Wrights...... much much better. I think it's worth the gamble on Kelly. I'm glad we do have Wright though. He's good insurance in case someone falters.
  5. Very low expectations from Kelly then? Can't say I disagree with you though. I wish we got to see more of Wright last year. From what I've seen, if he is our number 5 we are about mediocre. Yea, throwing him in to rescue a starter would be a matter of timing. Probably very difficult to call when you need to see if a starter can manage his way through trouble. I'd think he could do long relief if he knew it was his role. I'm guestimating that his bad relief stats are due to him being thrown in to short relief stints. Which I think he is the wrong tool to use at the time. Make his role long relief and I think he could shine. I guess other than a great long relief you have a number 5 that may or may not be better than other pieces you have, and where he will just linger like the lingering knuckleballer he has been.
  6. This interests me. Yes I agree that a knuckleballer shouldn't be brought in for relief especially when people are on base. The chance of past balls are to great. But a super backup long man role such as Wright seems like a role that could be useful. So those games where you know the starter isn't going to make it, call in Wright to carry the game though with his just about 4 ERA. With our offense, I think this could work. I know that role is unorthodox, but it would be interesting to play around with. And otherwise they are just going to sit him unless a started gets hurt. I don't think they have much trust in him, otherwise we would have seen him more last year.
  7. If I went I'd want to meet Robbie Ross and do an air guitar session with him to Dokken..
  8. What slot is Johnson projected to become? After reading about him recently I was surprised how well he had been doing until injured. I see Wright used for long relief during the season. With him, if our starters falter early in a game, he can be brought in. He's a strange piece. I would be hard pressed to go to him in a relief situation with people on being concerned with a past ball. He's much better than last years first half Kelly, and worse than second half Kelly. I forget, what did they chalk up Kelly's turn around to? Was it arm slot or something?
  9. Hey.... I like reading your posts. I seriously do. You are a poster that makes me think. Maybe it was a bit from the norm is why I commented. Sorry, I'm into watching and not posting during the offseason. I also like people calling it as they see it. I don't think people just post here to sound negative or positive...... I don't. Sorry...... I shouldn't have just interjected on your post while not being part of the group...... but, by all means.......... let s*** fly if you see an issue, or let s*** fly if you see a good thing......
  10. Isn't that true when the match\game is a long time off? Doesn't the odds get closer to what should really be considered just before the bout?
  11. That's pretty crazy. I never would have thought that with the questions marks we have. I guess other teams have even more question marks. For me it just seems like this team as it is has many more question marks than some Sox teams in the past that did or didn't go anywhere. I'm usually fairly optimistic on the team. Maybe last years disaster has changed me. We also won the off season with acquisitions just like the year before. I don't think that ever bodes well for whatever voodoo makes that not work....... Maybe I'm just turning into one of those old guys in the balcony watching the Muppets.....
  12. Did you just complain about people crapping on the team? And then proceed to crap on the rotation? Am I missing something here?
  13. I think it was both. Did Hannigan catch him the second half? And also they did the breakdown of his pitch selection, and it was different from his norm so there is some truth to that. I think that adjusted the second half. I almost expect his pitch selection changed due to him not executing, or feeling uncomfortable. He had nothing that first half. Couldn't hit the corners, and had nothing on it when he found the corner. I hate to say it. The second half he was a hit away from most starts getting put out in the 4th or 5th. The line may look much much better than the first half, but he was dancing with danger most of the games the second half and I don't think made it past the 6th very often. He looked like a pitcher trying to rebound. I don't remember a game he dominated.
  14. I think that is the only option. If Hanley is horrible at first. We bench him, and he waits to take the DH spot the year after. I don't know why I'm coming around to thinking he may be serviceable at first. Maybe because I haven't seen him play for a few month. But dang.... when I think back he just looks so uncoordinated and just flat out confused on D I am probably fooling myself. I still think he can hit like a beast. He was going absolutely bonkers hitting at the beginning of the year, and I think that's the true Hanley when not hurt. I could see him as a great DH. I have the feeling the first two years we paid him is a sunk cost....
  15. Porcello, Kelly, E-Rod, Buch are all question marks with high potential. I'm really excited to see E-Rod this year though.............. from what he showed last year he could be phenomenal, I think we have something there. He makes it look easy. Porcello may be able to hang in to the six inning, and now that our bullpen is strong that will help his case. Buch......... WHO THE HELL KNOWS!!!!!!!!! Kelly............ Hoping for the best......... but think he we will all want him in the pen at some point. Runs will help this staff...... Hanley is the biggest gamble and a major factor........ if Hanley somehow can hold down first and can hit to his average..... we should rake....... but maybe, as we might need some outfield help later on if Castillo or JBJ can't hit.....
  16. I approve this endorsement........
  17. Well said Soxhop........ you again prove you are the most intelligent person on this board....... keep it up........ boomshanka..
  18. You know..... one thing I liked about DD was that he saw H-Ram in left and put an end to that massacre right away. I don't know if I should really give him credit for that........ but as an outsider I guess it was easier to say.......... .WHOA........ this is a massive F..... up......... and let's not do that any more......... Which I think didn't take guts to do............. it was more along the lines of realizing and stating that the monkey on meth was actually controlling the space ship housing the human astronauts hurtling in the trajectory of that massive destructive comet and that the path of the spaceship needs to be changed immediately........
  19. I think the needing a slump stopper stuff is boloney. Unless you refer to a slump stopper as an entire solid rotation that won't allow a slump. We are going into this season with about as much confidence in our 2 through 5 pitchers as last year. E-Rod is the only one other than Price I have much confidence in. The stints of brilliance from Porcello and Kelly the second half last season isn't something I'd bank on. I guess it would be positive to say that if the entire staff did mediocre to what was expected, we would be ok and possibly be battling for a playoff spot. But the rotation right now does not instill confidence, and like last year has many question marks........... All in all....... we are walking into a season again with a very questionable rotation. Which could be great, could be poor, or could be mediocre. We are not walking in to the season in a position of strength.
  20. Good stuff man............ Porcello's performance last year was hard to comprehend............. his pitch selection was hard to comprehend........... was it management, or his idea? His second half stuff was alright............. some of his lines looked good.................. but I saw quite a few of his second half games and he was on the ropes quite a bit and a hit or two would have made it much worse........... and he didn't get that deep in the games...................... I have no idea what we will get out of Porcello next year........... but I wouldn't bet on what I would consider a number 2 performance...... I'd say Kelly has the same odds as being a number 2 next year....... and both those bets would be a risk.
  21. Send the links my way please.... I'm interested and hope to skim them. Defensive catching seems like a skill that would be very hard to build a stat for since there are many factors that would factor in with a past ball, a stolen base, or blocked pitch.
  22. Let's give him a month or two to settle in and get the deer in the headlights look to go away. Then check his second half stats compared to the league.
  23. Interesting...... my eyes deceived me............ not like that hasn't been the first time....
  24. Now if he turns out to be an above average defender, wouldn't he than be the best catcher in the league? I think he was the top offensive catcher last year, or was at one point. I like defense behind the plate. I tell myself I'm a person who believes that defense is what matters in the catching position. But having a catcher who can spray line drives all over the place like Swihart is hard to pass up......... if we do trade him. We better get something really good.
  25. How is that calculated? I'd like to see that stat measured minus the games he caught Wright. I also wonder what the first month of stats look like compared to the last couple of months in the season. Swihart when he first came up had this look in his face of "WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING HERE". Which was totally understandable considering the situation. I wonder, along with his hitting if he settled in the with defense also.
