  1. I know it was just one game. But I don't like giving the Yankees any hope of getting back into it. How different would things feel today if the Yankees had won last night's game and split the series with us? Thank goodness that didn't happen. They are not that far out from a wildcard slot. For this upcoming Yankees/Rays series, it's still Go Rays!
  2. I'm not sure why you want to trade our starting pitching for PTBNL. If we were out of contention, then sure, but not while we're in the midst of a playoff chase.
  3. If I'm not mistaken, Cora wants him to get up to about 80-85 pitches. Sale reached the desired number of pitches in last night's outing, but did not reach the desired number of innings in terms of getting up and down. It sounds like 2 more minor league starts for him before being called up.
  4. I hate the trade deadline. And the entire offseason. All of the rumors and speculation drive me crazy. I can't imagine what the players go through. It might not be so bad if you're on a losing team and you hear rumors about being traded to a contender, but it has to be awful to be on the flip side of that.
  5. Unfortunately, with the Yankees win last night, they now have some renewed hope. I'm not concerned about the Red Sox losing that game, but I hate that we were not able to deliver that crushing blow to the Yankees.
  6. There is a lot of value in being able to eat innings and take the ball every 5th day. I think that value is often overlooked. Not to mention that his results did not do any justice to his actual pitching. I would do the Porcello contract over again in a heartbeat.
  7. Exactly. Which leads me back to my favorite scouting report about JD Drew, which turned out to be so true. And I'm paraphrasing a bit. JD will easily get to balls that Trot Nixon had to dive for, and he will be criticized for it.
  8. I don't disagree. I never said that he wouldn't trade any prospects.
  9. Fair enough.
  10. The GM always says there is not mandate about staying under the luxury tax. I don't see them going over the tax limit for a rental player. While going over this year, in and of itself, is not a big deal, the future ramifications of going over this year could be a big deal. The longer the Sox can put off having to reset the penalty again, the more flexibility they will have. IMO, we have to look at the bigger picture. This is not the year to do it.
  11. Bloom is likely to pull of a trade that none of us saw coming. Not that it will be a blockbuster, just unexpected.
  12. I do think your two statements are kind of contradictory though. Your post about going over the luxury tax suggests that we should do whatever it takes to win this season because we don't know what will happen next season. Your post about Sale suggests that we should be more concerned about next season as opposed to how Sale might help us this season.
  13. The Sox are being extremely careful with him. They are not going to rush him back at the risk of losing him next season. Again, long term goals.
  14. No, there is no way to know how the team will do next year, much less 2023 and 2024, though on paper, they should be very good. Regardless, you don't jeopardize future and long term goals to be all in this year, especially when you can make the necessary tweaks without doing so. This is technically a 'rebuilding' year for the Sox. Bloom and Henry are not going to suddenly change course on their long term goals.
  15. Stop.
  16. Stop.
  17. I was surprised by this move. Who gives up part of their rotation in the midst of a pennant race? And yet, the Rays continue to win.
  18. The great thing about Bloom is that he is most definitely prioritizing the long term success of the team over just short term results. He won't make any moves that hurt the long term goals.
  19. Despite my occasional criticisms, the bottom line is that we are both good with whatever Cora and Bloom decide to do. They have things under control.
  20. I completely understand where you're coming from. My bet is that Bloom is looking for an upgrade at 1B, whether it be a full time 1B or a left handed platoon. At the same time, I would be fine if Dalbec remained our main 1B for the remainder of the season.
  21. Nice pick up for the Rays. The Sox will and should do whatever they were planning to do before the Rays acquired Cruz.
  22. You don't have to sell me on Perez. As you said, let's see what happens over the next 10 weeks, but as of now, I would pick up his option.
  23. You're welcome. I very much enjoyed your TedTalk.
  24. Max, I don't disagree that Perez' failure to reach 5 innings in many games is an issue. His average Game Score is 48 (50 being considered an average outing.) For the back end of the rotation, that's not bad. I'm not saying he's been great. Just saying that I would be okay if the Sox picked up his option for next year.
  25. They may not have as much financial flexibility after this year, but it was that flexibility that allowed them to sign Mookie and Bauer. Not that I am in agreement with either of those moves, but when you have a strong farm and have recently reset the luxury tax penalty, you can go big on free agents from time to time. The Dodgers may have handcuffed themselves for a few years with those big contracts, but from the time Friedman took over the Dodgers until present, he has done an outstanding job, IMO.
