  1. Spot on post. On a related note, one of the reporters asked David Price if he had talked to a sports psychologist regarding his postseason woes. Price's response was something to the effect of that he didn't need to talk to a sports psychologist about that because he is not mentally weak. In other words, Price does not feel like his lack of success in the post season has anything to do with mental side of his game.
  2. All aboard the Pablo bandwagon! Woot! Woot!
  3. Fooling around or not, you should absolutely thank Ben for the great state of our team. FTR, I don't think that Beni should be considered a prospect, and the fact that he is considered one is a little misleading in terms of the state of our farm system.
  4. I disagree that it is an overdue change. I will go on record as saying that I disapprove of this change. And yes, it will have a very minor impact on the length of the games.
  5. No one is expecting him to be prime Ted Williams. We realize that he is a rookie and that there will be a learning curve. That said, we have good reason to be excited about Beni.
  6. Agreed. His aging curve is likely accelerated because of his weight, especially defensively.
  7. I am glad that we all agree that Beni will handle the pressure just fine. Now, if we could all agree that Pablo will bounce back and be fine...
  8. There was a study done where teammates were asked who they wanted up at the plate with the game on the line. They were given the choice of the better player or the player that was considered to be clutch. One such example was the choice between ARod or Jeter. Most teammates chose the 'clutch' player, in this case Jeter. The better player overwhelmingly outperformed the so called clutch player in clutch situations. The point being, who we think of as being clutch may often be false perception.
  9. They have repeated a clutch hit, but not to the extent that it is any different from what they normally do.
  10. I know that you were being snarky, which does not suit you BTW, but no one has ever said that.
  11. I'm not sure why you and a couple of others keep bringing that strawman argument up, since no one has said anything of the kind. Brady is so darn good that almost any outstanding performance he has can be attributed to his skill and talent, which is quite the opposite of randomness.
  12. In terms of how most people think of momentum, I agree that it does not exist.
  13. There is a lot of hype surrounding him, which could become overwhelming for a young kid. He seems to be handling himself very well. I think he'll be fine.
  14. I don't care how much he weighs either if he plays well. He has always been overweight and he has played well until he came to Boston. I'm not expecting an all star, but I am expecting a league average 3rd baseman.
  15. No. There are many things that are not measurable that I believe exist. I have talked about Pedroia's 'grit' before, as one example. I don't believe clutch exists because there is very strong evidence that it doesn't.
  16. This is the kind of news I like to hear. ERod throws tomorrow, if I'm not mistaken.
  17. I won't be surprised if any of those things happen. It is really difficult to know what we'll get out of Pablo either on or off the field. Even if he stays 'slim', that's no guarantee that he'll play well. That said, I'm going to remain hopeful and positive. He has been working hard and I think his attitude is in the right place.
  18. You are right, I use the word 'clutch' and the word 'choke' regularly when watching the games. I have even referred to Papi as being clutch when he comes up big. There are definitely clutch hits and clutch moments. It is just not a repeatable skill or talent that any player possesses.
  19. Hi Slash. I believe in momentum as far as it is something that exists. I don't believe in it in terms of having any predictive value. For example, if a team has won 7 games in a row to end the season, that team has momentum. If, however, one said that this team has a better chance of winning their first postseason series because they have all the momentum, that would be a false statement. The team with momentum is not more likely to be successful in the future, whether you're talking about one play, one inning, one game, or several series. In other words, momentum is one of those descriptive words of what has already happened, not a predictive word of what is likely to happen.
  20. I do not really disagree with any of this.
  21. One of the difficulties in proving the existence or nonexistence of clutch is that there is no consensus on exactly what a clutch moment is. A hit that one person considers to be clutch might not be clutch to another. However, the baseball geeks are some pretty smart folks. If the Sox are up by 4 runs and Papi comes to the plate, that plate appearance will not be considered clutch. That said, the researchers have studied the idea of clutch from just about every angle that it can be studied from. Regardless of how it's been dissected, the results come back the same.
  22. You make a good point about the fans remembering the plays they think decide the big games. Confirmation bias plays a big part in what we tend to remember in our pursuit of clutch.
  23. It's not only big hits in games that your team loses that are less memorable, it's also the countless moments when a supposed clutch hitter does not come through in the clutch that are less memorable. We tend to remember the big winning moments, thereby anointing players like Papi with the title of "clutch", but we tend to forget the many times that he did not get a big hit when the game was on the line.
  24. I think it is a pretty special feeling, but I did find that particular statement of his to be a little condescending.
