  1. Lester was insulted by a lowball offer though. I don't think that Mookie has been insulted by such an offer. It appears that Mookie is going for the most money. If the Sox offered him the most money next year, I think he'd come back. However, I don't think the Sox are willing to be the highest bidders.
  2. Signing JD to the contract that he did was one of Dombrowski's better moves.
  3. I'm not sure that 'unethical' is the right term, but otherwise, I agree completely with you. I hope that the Sox were up front with JD in terms of their desire to trade him or not.
  4. I've said it before and it didn't sit well with most posters, but frankly, I'm over Betts' desire to get the most money. Yes, I understand that he has earned that right. I also understand that money isn't everything, especially when the Sox have reportedly given Betts some very fair offers. With that said, we are a better team with Betts than without him. I hope the Sox can find a way to keep both Betts and JD this year, then either trade him at the deadline if the Sox are out of contention, or let him walk. With that said, the best option for the Sox long term sustainability would be to trade Mookie this year. I'm so conflicted. LOL
  5. I think the Sox will find a way to keep JD and Mookie, but JBJ will be non-tendered or traded.
  6. Personally, if we have the choice of only being able to keep one, I'd rather have JD than Mookie.
  7. Exactly. Stat geeks unite!
  8. Understanding the context is a big part of any stat. RBI is a stat that is not only largely dependent on playing time, but it's also largely dependent on the rest of the team. And yet, many of the same people who argue against WAR accept RBIs as a good stat and don't consider it to be flawed. If we say that a player has 50 RBIs, do we not want to look at how many games said player has played in? Why is it any different for WAR?
  9. My understanding is that several strong and fair offers have been made to Betts, and Betts has declined. He's going to free agency, unless the Sox give him a deal so outrageous that he can't say no. Yes, Bloom will have more money to throw around than he did with the Rays, and I'm sure he'll offer some contracts higher than what he did with the Rays. I don't believe he will offer a 10 year deal to any player. I just can't see it.
  10. I also would prefer that JD just DH. But because of playing in NL parks, why not let him get some reps at 1B? Pearce ended up being a bust for this year, but signing a relief pitcher instead would have not made any difference in terms of getting to the postseason.
  11. I think it was a little more than that, but it was still a panic move, IMO. Theo agreed that he jumped the gun on that one.
  12. Not at all. A large part of the value of a player is being able to stay healthy and stay on the field. That said, as with any stat, one must understand the context surrounding the stat.
  13. If JBJ is in fact gone, I echo your sentiments. I will miss him.
  14. As a teacher, I often answer a question with a question.
  15. I have always preferred giving a larger AAV for fewer years rather than the other way around.
  16. Obviously, Bloom will have a larger budget to work with than he did in Tampa. He has been given the directive to cut payroll, however, so I can't see a large contract being given to Mookie. Also, one of his main goals is sustainable success. That doesn't typically coincide well with $300 million, 10 year contracts to one player.
  17. Time will tell what happens with Mookie, but I tend to agree with you. I can't see Bloom offering a 10 year contract to any player, and rightly so, IMO. I will be shocked if he does.
  18. I completely agree with this. I thought it made a lot of sense to do it last year, and I still think it makes a lot of sense. I would rather see JD at 1B occasionally then see him in the OF occasionally.
  19. At least we know he won't be going to the Yankees.
  20. If our starting pitchers are healthy, I don't see anyway that our team is not highly competitive in 2020. We have too much talent remaining on the team.
  21. Agreed. I now just hope the FO doesn't trade him away. That would be right up there with trading Arroyo.
  22. FTR, I was very pleased when I heard they were bringing back Mirabelli. But still.
  23. It's because oWAR and dWAR both include the positional adjustment. Therefore, when you add oWAR + dWAR you are adding the positional adjustment twice.
  24. That was a pure panic move. Exhibit A as to why you don't panic in baseball.
  25. If true, I'm glad to hear it. I hope he doesn't get traded.
