If it's an essential surgery, by all means. If it's an elective surgery, it can wait.

You are missing the point. It's not just one little TJS. If he is allowed to get it done, how many other non-essential surgeries do you think are being done for the wealthy? Blaine Hardy, a player on the Twins minor league roster also just had TJS. But the main point is that every resource that is used for a non-essential surgery is one resource that is being taken away from critical patients during a time when those resources are greatly, greatly needed.

I don't follow the White Sox closely enough to know what that team dynamic was like or to know who the clubhouse leaders were. Some say that Sale was being the team leader by cutting up the jerseys. Hogwash. Rebellious acts don't make him a great teammate, and they certainly don't make him a great team leader.

I agree, but I don't think selfishness to the point of perhaps costing other people their lives is considered in moderation.

Yeah, I saw your earlier post about this. I would not be surprised if Sale has already had the surgery. If that's the case, that might be an even worse look that the Sox and Sale are trying to be so secretive about it.

Syndegaard did indeed have his surgery today. This seems to bother me more than it bothers most of the rest of you, but I am disappointed in both Syndegaard and the doctor who performed the surgery.

I don't know anything about the guy or the situation, but it doesn't sound like the kind of player we want on our team. Reminds me of when Bartolo Colon disappeared on us.

Thanks for posting this. It specifically states that non urgent orthopedic surgeries should be delayed. Then there is this, from Speier today: "In Massachusetts, Gov. Charlie Baker called for the postponement of elective procedures on March 15. Three Massachusetts orthopedists contacted by the Globe said the state’s prohibition would include ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (i.e. Tommy John surgery), and that the operation shouldn’t be performed here for anyone, including professional athletes. “There’s no question that Tommy John is an elective surgery,” said former Red Sox medical director Thomas Gill, now the director of the New England Baptist Hospital-affiliated Boston Sports Medicine and Research Institute. “A lot of guys try PRP [platelet-rich plasma] injections, try rehab to avoid it, and when they can’t, they end up having surgery. The answer: DOCTORS are the ones who define "essential" -- and this hospital said Tommy John for a baseball player counts. Bogus preferential treatment for the rich and famous, if you ask me.

I am not convinced that we are going to go after him, and I really hope that we don't. Unless we can get him for about half of what he is asking for in both $ and years.

Players will reportedly get a full year of service time for games played in 2020. No decision yet on what would happen if the season gets completely cancelled.
