  1. Wow. Well that sure saves the Farm, doesn't it? And only paying Price $50 million to pitch for someone else? Bean-counters REJOICE!
  2. No, but then, he has cut down on the numbers of those fans, to the more manageable levels he was familiar with in Tampa Bay. You know, with sell-outs every night, it really is hard to keep track of your fan base.
  3. You mean without experiencing it? I think BV was MUCH more interesting than that!
  4. But those 15,000 fans who attend games, their eyes glued to various fantasy-trade apps, will be REALLY psyched!
  5. So your boss tells you "We don't think you're worth more than 75% of what others do." Your boss then, likely without consulting you, ships you off 3000 miles away for a year, not for your own good, but simply to save himself some money. After that year, your former boss says, "OK. Are you ready to talk now?" What would you do?
  6. He was perfectly reasonable. He said he wanted to test free agency to see what his worth was on the open market, and the owner in the best position to pay him that was JH. Now that we know JH values his bank account more than he values the best player in the league and probably the most popular player in Boston, we can act accordingly.
  7. I didn't mind listening to Mendoza and Arod. The only announcer who makes me turn off the sound is Hubie Brown. (Well, of course, there's Don Cherry, but fortunately he's gone.)
  8. Not only does he not have a WS championship yet, he doesn't even have a WIN! JBJ hasn't done s*** since Roenike arrived, and I can't think of one game-time decision he's made thus far that I agree with.
  9. Given that Cora did not institute the elaborate sign-stealing scheme he was familiar w/ at Houston, the rather tame system alleged at Boston was unlikely his. Sounds as if managerial ethos at both clubs was "to let the guys--i.e.,players and bench coach?--do what they want, and stay out of the way." Which if true would mean Roenike was a lot closer to anything going on than Cora. (I admit, I just want Cora back in baseball, so perhaps these idle speculations are a function of tthat.)
  10. Actually, the reason I bring it up is because I'm not really a fan of guys who invite 17 year old runaways to their hotel rooms and do nothing (except maybe hold a video camera) while she is beaten up and sexually assaulted. And as a sports fan, I don't want guys like that on a team I follow. Now maybe you're more concerned with the economics of a baseball trade, and I don't blame you for that. You and I just don't have a whole lot in common.
  11. Yeah, I know. there were even folks who brought s*** like that up during the Kobe deification, or even during the Antonio Brown saga. We really need to stop and focus on the important things in life, like how much money owners of professional sports franchises make.
  12. So was he the guy filming it? How many 'parties' have you attended where your two buddies (I believe there were only 4 people there at the time, right?) raped a drunk, drug-addled teenager and you stood by and did nothing? (Sorry I'm vague on the details here; that story was so revolting I have no interest in going back to it.)
  13. I don't know: one suspected rapist, a minor league pitcher, both with histories of injury, plus paying Price to play for someone else. Seems to me that getting rid of the best player in baseball on a contract well below market value is a pretty small price to pay for a haul like that.
  14. Come on, man. If you follow a player like that on the field, you are no longer a true fan (or at least a true fan as measured by posters on sports boards), whose primary concerns are fantasy leagues, diwx97jacWAR, and competitive GM-ing
  15. I don't think they do. They still have to pay a good amount of Price's salary, and they also have to pay the players who are coming in. To me, what they did is get rid of a popular, MVP calibre player, whom they could have gotten for one year at WAY below market value. But JH is happy--that's the important thing. And, since TB is the model, the 14,000 fans who attend each game will be able to stretch out over a bunch of seats and relax.
  16. Can you build a better one around a suspected rapist with little MLB experience and a history of injury?
  17. Well, so far. But asking fans who have been following Mookie for years to switch their loyalties and cheer on a suspected rapist instead ... not sure that's going to work.
  18. Tampa Bay may have been competitive, but they also have one of the lowest attendance rates in MLB. Is this the model of success the RS want to follow? Getting rid of your best players may be great for 'fantasy-ball' fans, but it's not great for fans who like to watch baseball and pay money to do so.
  19. https://www.si.com/mlb/2020/02/05/red-sox-trade-mookie-betts-dodgers Agree totally with this writer, although we must understand by "fans," this writer means 'those who love watching baseball and want their team to win', not 'those who love competitive GM-ing and look at prof. sports as versions of their fantasy league'.
  20. Wow. Verdugo and ... who? "We're SAVED!"-- (Vladimir)
  21. I don't know about tthat. It worked fine for Socrates (well, maybe until tthe end.)
  22. Any examples of that? I can't think of any, although there certainly are players who were overpaid and did not play up to their salaries. Don't most people pretty much "do what they do" regardless of what they get paid? A competitive athlete will try to win, whether he's paid, over-paid, or 'insulted' by the offer he gets, no?
  23. Just a question: the CBA does not allow renegotiating (or 'restructuring' as the euphemism goes) a contract at any point during the life of that contract, correct? Thus the only way to get rid of an 'opt out' provision in a contract would be to have the player exercise that opt out and negotiate a new contract, right?
  24. I get the fact that (fans? GMs? owners?) don't like long-term contracts. Great. So here's an alternative: you can have the MVP at something below fair market value for a nice short-term contract (one year) w/ no commitments beyond that. Why on earth would you pass that up?? For the 'future'? 2020 IS the future. If I were as enamored of "prospects" as those here, I would simply stay home and follow the SeaDogs.
