  1. And some of it is having a really good opponent who has scouted the hell out of you.
  2. Colome is interesting - and since the Sox biggest asset ultimately is taking on salary, that could work. Diaz is still too good a bargain for Seattle to pass up willy nilly.
  3. that is a good question. It was bad most of the season, but after all the churn - the bullpen was actually pretty good in the postseason. Williamson was fine. The bullpen gave up 4 earned runs in 34.1 innings in the 2003 postseason - a 1.05 ERA. It took a while, but the Red Sox had a workable pen by the end of the season - regardless of Grady's hunches about it.
  4. Cora - for better or worse - laid out to win Game 5. So we have 3 chances to win this ... Barnes facing 1 batter allows him to be available today. Given that Cora clearly planned to get 6 outs from Kimbrel - Barnes being available was probably part of the strategy. I expect Eovaldi is available for an inning tonight - let's see if Price can get through the order twice.
  5. 2013 was a good example. Uehara basically took the job because he was so much better than the other relievers. There is nothing special about the 9th inning - especially with a 3 run lead. Now you need a 9th inning guy - because pitchers like having defined jobs to a certain degree. But spending 30 million dollars or something stupid on it is silly unless it's 2013 Uehara or Mariano Rivera. I always cite Tampa who have been able to find closers by going through other teams' garbage.
  6. Like everything else with the bullpen, throw bodies at it and let it iron itself out. I certainly am not itching to give Kimbrel 3 years or anything.
  7. West is all of those things. But the call was not wrong. As I said, the Sox were lucky to get the call ... usually the interference has to be more blatant.
  8. Bogaerts has 2 hits too. And throw in Brasier and Barnes for good measure.
  9. TBS is pretty clearly the worst league partner that I have seen in any of the major sports. I mean if it wasn't for Brian Anderson it's all terrible.
  10. I don't think the call was wrong ... but it was a break that went out way. Usually I expect umps to call that a homerun ... interference is usually more blatant. We got lucky - to win it all, sometimes you gotta.
  11. some game - great outfield play, some clutch hitting ... obviously the fan interference was a ... well, if it happened the other way we'd be really pissed and not without reason. I'm not saying the call was wrong - but it was not obvious and it's not a call you usually ever see called. Hinch's comments are measured and sensible. (watching the presser) I am surprised Cora did not ask Barnes to get 4 outs. Will see if they can win a bullpen game tomorrow. If Price can get through the order once it'd be a victory
  12. The 2003 Red Sox, for starters
  13. outfield drama - right way for this to end
  14. he's feeling his slider tonight at least
  15. they didn't really square him up ... the Springer double was a good pitch
  16. I don't read too much into it. The large players the Yankees have are corner players, where you'd expect it. The Red Sox smaller players are up the middle dudes, where you expect the smaller guys to play. I mean Bogaerts is pretty big for a SS. If anything, the Red Sox emphasis on scouting and drafting has been to basically draft shortstops and centerfielders - which makes sense. It's where you play your best athletes (especially at the amateur level).
  17. Every reliever is like this - Kimbrel needs the endurance. But as long as you don't turn the lineup over, there is no reason he couldn't.
  18. Random thoughts: 1. The Garden crowd chanting JBJ in the first quarter was really cool. Hard not to be thrilled for him. 2. It's easy to overlook, and obviously it would have been nice for him to nab that Bregman double (it was a tough chance, but doable) but Devers has been pretty darn good at the plate this postseason. He had a mildly disappointing season at the plate, but he has clearly looked like he belongs facing the best teams he has faced all season. 3. For all the genuflecting about the Astros' greatness - it was easy to overlook that the Sox played like crap in Game 1. The Sox had their first clean performance of the series in Game 3 and whaddya know? The Astros are really good. But so are we.
  19. He's a good athlete with a tremendous arm and exceptional power. The question will be whether he just makes enough contact to allow the other stuff to play.
  20. I don't know - the reports I read this season were that he played 3B pretty well. He's athletic and has a cannon. Dalbec's problem is very simple - he strikes out ... a ton, a much higher rate than you expect from a successful prospect.
  21. https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/1051326344347422721 I LOL'd
  22. Nothing like beating the Yankees four times in a row in playoff games in the Bronx to deliver a feeling of failure.
  23. they were beatable last year too. There is no reason to be scared of them. there is no reason to believe this series is a sure thing.
  24. (it is an ownership choice if this is a real either/or)
