  1. Bregman went 1 for 9 in the 2 games at leadoff. Bregman went 2 for 15 in the 5 game. Aside from the teeny tiny sample size problem - there is much more evidence that (gasp!) the Red Sox pitched him well than anything else. OUTS ARE BAD ... there was a reason Boston and Houston were both near the bottom in sacrifice hits. Productive outs reduce your expected runs in almost every situation. The game will always change - that's fine.
  2. The Astros were so defeated that both game 3 and 4 were on the table in the 8th inning at worst.
  3. The Red Sox were the best team in the league in 2007 - they got within one game of death. The Red Sox were arguably the best team in the league in 2004 - we know how desperate that got The Red Sox were the best team in the league in 2013 - they were never in dire trouble It's baseball - the best thing about the postseason is that it's a tense exciting way to determine a champion. It has next to nothing to do with identifying the best team. And that's fine.
  4. Bregman was inches away from a game winning double in Game 4. Price was brilliant in Game 5 and that's baseball for you. I did not know the NL switched to aluminum bats.
  5. Game 1 is Tuesday. So Price will have 5 days of rest for Game 2.
  6. Hinch moving Bregman had 0 to do with it. The Red Sox played horrendously in Game 1 and lost. Seriously, 10 walks and 3 hit batters would make it hard to beat Baltimore in mid-July. The Red Sox played better in Games 2-5 and won. The Red Sox were relentless offensively - not giving away outs. The bottom of the lineup - the real weak spot of this team all season, came through. Bradley and Devers had great series, and the catcher position was never a serious drag on things.
  7. The studio show on FOX is pretty good. I expect Boston to be favored in the World Series. At the same time, there is no such thing as a true blue "shocker" at this stage of the season. The Dodgers are probably a tougher matchup - but the Brewers could absolutely win the whole thing. And aside from the Red Sox having to be the ones to lose, it'd be a good story for baseball.
  8. Bradley was the deserving MVP of the ALCS. But Devers had a really good series and has had a pretty damn good postseason.
  9. It's baseball - the opponent will be tough. I think we've learned by now that any grand pronouncements of sweep or whatever is based entirely on expertise that gets pulled out of one's butt.
  10. Verlander has lost 1 career postseason game to an AL team - that AL team was BOSTON
  11. After the first time through the order, Cora will start watching the odometer. If Price gets through the order twice, Cora will do backflips.
  12. And some of it is having a really good opponent who has scouted the hell out of you.
  13. Colome is interesting - and since the Sox biggest asset ultimately is taking on salary, that could work. Diaz is still too good a bargain for Seattle to pass up willy nilly.
  14. that is a good question. It was bad most of the season, but after all the churn - the bullpen was actually pretty good in the postseason. Williamson was fine. The bullpen gave up 4 earned runs in 34.1 innings in the 2003 postseason - a 1.05 ERA. It took a while, but the Red Sox had a workable pen by the end of the season - regardless of Grady's hunches about it.
  15. Cora - for better or worse - laid out to win Game 5. So we have 3 chances to win this ... Barnes facing 1 batter allows him to be available today. Given that Cora clearly planned to get 6 outs from Kimbrel - Barnes being available was probably part of the strategy. I expect Eovaldi is available for an inning tonight - let's see if Price can get through the order twice.
  16. 2013 was a good example. Uehara basically took the job because he was so much better than the other relievers. There is nothing special about the 9th inning - especially with a 3 run lead. Now you need a 9th inning guy - because pitchers like having defined jobs to a certain degree. But spending 30 million dollars or something stupid on it is silly unless it's 2013 Uehara or Mariano Rivera. I always cite Tampa who have been able to find closers by going through other teams' garbage.
  17. Like everything else with the bullpen, throw bodies at it and let it iron itself out. I certainly am not itching to give Kimbrel 3 years or anything.
  18. West is all of those things. But the call was not wrong. As I said, the Sox were lucky to get the call ... usually the interference has to be more blatant.
  19. Bogaerts has 2 hits too. And throw in Brasier and Barnes for good measure.
  20. TBS is pretty clearly the worst league partner that I have seen in any of the major sports. I mean if it wasn't for Brian Anderson it's all terrible.
  21. I don't think the call was wrong ... but it was a break that went out way. Usually I expect umps to call that a homerun ... interference is usually more blatant. We got lucky - to win it all, sometimes you gotta.
  22. some game - great outfield play, some clutch hitting ... obviously the fan interference was a ... well, if it happened the other way we'd be really pissed and not without reason. I'm not saying the call was wrong - but it was not obvious and it's not a call you usually ever see called. Hinch's comments are measured and sensible. (watching the presser) I am surprised Cora did not ask Barnes to get 4 outs. Will see if they can win a bullpen game tomorrow. If Price can get through the order once it'd be a victory
  23. The 2003 Red Sox, for starters
  24. outfield drama - right way for this to end
  25. he's feeling his slider tonight at least
