  1. Cards are playing well tonight - if every series comes down to margins like this, as a Sox fan I am still sufficiently nervous.
  2. It's that, but it is also spoiling pitches, competing ... strategy doesn't work if we are swinging at 3 pitches down the middle.
  3. Wish he did that more, because he clearly can ... We have the lead - we have the travel day (so we can bring Koji in early without any qualms). Lackey has been really sharp, but no reason to not quick hook now.
  4. Without a good 3rd pitch, going to be hard to be an ace in the long run
  5. The way Buck read that promo, you'd think BOSTON COLLEGE was in the Big East too ... and yes, Raftery is the best college basketball analyst, not that it's a loaded field
  6. McCarver is sorta right there - hitters often are not aggressive enough on 3-0 count ... but the reason that's the case is that the umps seem FAR likelier to call a borderline pitch a strike.
  7. We know they will adjust - Wacha is not really fooling them. The stuff is good, but the at-bats have looked relatively comfortable.
  8. Cute decoy attempt by Holliday - come on, as if Pedroia doesn't know how hard he hit that?
  9. Sox needed a run anyway. Did a good job keeping the damage to a minimum.
  10. Yeah. Not good, not bad. As noted earlier - the at-bats (at least before the bottom of the order) have been ok ...
  11. Way to fight that off ... obvious steal situation here
  12. He is getting a lot of swing and miss in the strike zone, which is a bad sign ...
  13. Team led the NL in runs - but much more a doubles team than a homerun hitting one (team fits their ballpark more or less). And Kozma is basically about as bad a baseball player as has started on a pennant winner. The lineup is professional, but lot of them can be pitched to. Even Beltran, who is not as amazing as his postseason numbers (nobody is).
  14. I doubt it - that was a razor close series. Just a bunch of coin flip games against a worthy opponent. It's not like when we beat Cleveland in 2007 or New York in 2004 - where I could walk away and say "i think we beat the 2nd best team in the majors". But it's close.
  15. Buck would be better if he were paired with a sentient human being (like a Ron Darling or someone) instead of Tim McCarver.
  16. We don't look confused or fooled at the plate - working counts ok.
  17. I get the hype - his postseason performances have been amazing. But I lived through Tim Wakefield just about being the NLCS MVP in 1992. It's a great time for a hot streak - give me more than 64 IP before I make a more substantial verdict.
  18. fWAR I think is much better than bbWAR for pitchers for sure - for hitters it is at least a little closer. The bottom line is that Drew is a good shortstop, maybe better than that. But he is blocking a guy the franchise (and me) is bullish on. Could the Bogaerts-guys be wrong? Sure - no doubt. There is some risk there, but you make the best decision you can. Personally to me, the risk is minimal - 21 year olds who have progressed up the system the way he has, we are arguing between whether he will end up Jhonny Peralta or Alex Rodriguez (I know, I know) ... barring injury, it is extremely unlikely he is going to be a flameout. You want some depth? You don't spend on a true starter to provide insurance - or a supplement. Drew is too good to be an "extra guy" and the Red Sox would be spending too much money just to carry an "extra guy" of that caliber.
  19. Kozma is one of the very worst players to start on a pennant winner - scrappy mcscrapperson ... really they could do worse than dealing Freese and Kozma, moving Carpenter to 3rd and signing Drew to play SS.
  20. If those defenders could have only caught that 2 run homerun in the 8th ... and thanks for the extra run
  21. Cards offense is good, and led the NL - the Red Sox scored 70 runs more, and even if you normalize for the different ERAs in the league that would still be higher than what the Cards output was. Both lineups are deep and balanced, though only the Cardinals are starting a replacement level player. Not everybody in the Sox lineup is hitting - but at least they all can.
  22. Not lacking at all ... the Red Sox offense is a little better. The Red Sox offense was the best in the bigs ... being a little worse than the league's best is not lacking.
  23. Drew is a good to very good SS blocking a guy who is part of the future plans. Yes Bogaerts is not a sure thing (but then again, aren't we all), but is there any reason for him not to get big boy ABs? Playing twice a week doesn't really cut it - you're better off getting him everyday reps at Pawtucket instead. I am not sure Drew wants to be a part-timer either. He's 30 with an injury history - but definitely good enough to not necessarily want to get into the Crash Davis "grizzled veteran" portion of his career yet. I defended him in the debate vs Iglesias - the Red Sox did the absolute right thing. But Bogaerts has shown conclusively to me - not that he's going to be a star next year, but that he is worth plugging in and having strong conviction about it. And I feel the same way about Bradley (albeit with less confidence) going into next season at CF.
  24. Sox pick it better than the Cards - the Cards pitching is a little more balanced and the Sox offense is a little better than the Cards, but it's close. Both managers are nothing special, but Farrell has done a better job in-game than Matheny has (at least from the analyses I have read and twitter and whatnot, the NLCS was full of howlers too).
  25. Beware using pitcher wins for anything. Wainwright's 2nd half FIP 3.07, first half 2.22 ... he went from amazing to very good. I am impressed certainly.
