    I think that at this point the damage has already been done. It was VERY poorly handled. The cost of this bungling has yet to be determined. I think Papelbon considered this when he left; Ortiz mentioned it too at the end of the year (he said something like "I am not sure I want to keep playing with all this drama around"). A selection of Lamont over Valentine would do further damage IMO in that players will look at this and see that the organization has learned nothing and that, most likely, it will continue to be a nonfactor in October.

    Sometimes people make the mistake of interpreting opinions as intended facts; and sometimes people pass off opinions as facts. As regards this situation, its a FACT that we do not yet have a manager named; and its a FACT that the team appears dysfunctional and disorganzed, at least to many people. I also think its a FACT that players would prefer to play for a team that appears professional and are winners than the alternative. The reasons for the delay are all opinion, obviously. Its hard to imagine why someone would interpret those opinions as intended facts. How could they be facts? None of us work for the Red Sox, as far as I know.

    ALL of us want the team to do well (well, almost all of us). This situation does not aid that goal at all. Perception IS important. Who wants to be a member of a team that appears to be in disarray like this? All other things being equal, I would chose to be on a different MORE PROFESSIONAL appearing team, one that seems to have its act together. You are right: none of us knows what is going on behind the scenes. Therefore, we are limited to offering opinions based on the facts we do know-one of which is that they have not yet named a manager in two months (the Cardinals took what-12 days?). The Red Sox do not need this right now. Its a mistake....in my opinion, of course.

    Still waiting for you to show me where I said that I attend Sox staff meetings or that I KNOW what is going on in the FO... What I DO know is that a manager has not been named. Thats the bottom line. Thats ALL any of us know for sure. They are the laughing stock of the media now. They APPEAR dysfunctional and indecisive. Read the link below from Shaughnessy if you don't believe me. You don't think players read some of this stuff? You don't think a team gets a reputation, positive or negative? Do you think this sort of stuff helps us out when it comes to APPEARING professional? I don't care if they have already decided; they should have already ACTED and named a manager in a prompt and expeditious manner.     Why don't you offer something up with a little thought? If you want more than assumptions and opinions on an issue then get off a message board and get a job in the organization. :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

    Show me where I claimed to know what is going on in the FO. You also have problems reading, I guess. Frankly, I could not care less what is going on in the FO. I care that the team is successful, and the adverse publicity it is receiving diminishes the chances of future success. Thats the bottom line. A team that looks silly (ie is "laughable"), dysfunctional, and indecisive will not look good to free agents who might be considering joining the team. They might still join if the price is higher than it otherwise might be. Thats only ONE example of how this ludicrous behavior hurts the team. For contrast, look at the Patriots. Players join that team at a discount because they have their s*** together. Try thinking before you post what you consider "laughable" in the future.

    Do you not see how dysfunctional this makes our FO look? The candidates are the same; they have all been interviewed. It makes the FO look indecisive and fragmented. Thats exactly what they do not need right now. Perception is everything, and the perception people hold of our FO now is deteriorating daily. Read the posts here, at least some of them. Sometimes if others tell you that you problems being decisive it influences your future decisions. This is a mistake. The manager should have been hired last week at the latest.

    You have trouble discerning what is laughable. To me, its laughable that the FO cannot make a decision despite knowing all of the available candidate for several weeks now. The interviews have been completed, the candidates are unchanged, and still they cannot make up their dysfunctional minds. Thats laughable.

    The word in the media earlier was that Wheeler would not be offered arbitration. I would not be unhappy to see him return.

    Of note: Today is the last day the Sox can offer arbitration to their FAs. Of note is that Wheeler is apparently not going to get that offer. His stats after he came back from from the DL in May are: ERA: 2.54, BAA: .253; OPSa: .567 Why is he not being offered arbitration? He made what: $3m? This is a mistake.

    He hasn't been "reduced" to a figurehead; he was ALWAYS a figurehead. He is a charter member of the "I do what I am told to do" club. Francona was President.

    Valentine or someone like him is EXACTLY what this team needs right now. Hiring him will serve a purpose: it will change the clubhouse and team philosophy. You can bet there will be no video games and beer in the clubhouse during games; you can bet that the team will be more fundamentally sound that it has been in years; and you can bet that the full offensive arsenal will be used trying to win games. I don't think he is a long term solution because eventually he will grate on people too much. In 2-3 years we can hire another "player's manager" because by then the guys in the dugout will have the proper attitude towards the game. Thats when we will become a relevant team again.
