  1. Hey-no problem this year with the pen. Bard can close. AND JENKS WILL BE THE NEW SETUP MAN...hahahaha
  2. Bard was overused last year. He faded in September because of that. From April 1 to Aug 31 he had an ERA of 2.03 with a BAA of .164 and an OPSa of .497. Superlative stats until he faded. For the same time period Papelbon had an ERA of 2.80, BAA of 202, and an OPSa of .537. Bard pitched in more games that Papelbon did and got burned out IMO. I think he will do just fine as long as Dave Martinez doesn't overuse him this year.....OOPS! We haven't hired Martinez YET.
  3. Yeah, but they overpaid for it. The ONLY way this deal is worth it is if Papelbon keeps putting up Rivera-like numbers for four more years. So far Rivera has a career ERA/WHIP of 2.21/1.00, and Papelbon is similar at 2.33/1.02. Rivera is one of the very few consistently excellent relievers in the history of the game. Most peak and its followed by inconsistent performances. For that money I would not want to see the Red Sox sign him. Bard will do fine.
  4. I don't really care if you think Fred is a "real fan" or not, but this kind of language is uncalled for on any civil board. If you want to post on public boards you should learn some common decency. Keep doing this and you will be reported to the mod here. Try disagreeing agreeably; it works a lot better than the kind of BS you have posted.
  5. Here's the confirmation: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2011/11/report_papelbon_2.html
  6. Sizemore has been a flop lately. He hit .224 with an OPS of .706 last year and was injured the year before that. We do not need another LHH OF. It would be a mistake to get him on board. Get Cuddyer instead.
  7. I will also tell you that Fred is a passionate Red Sox fan. I know: I have met him and spoken to him many times by phone. It is YOU who looks like a fool if you continue to claim otherwise. Do you know Fred personally? If not, I think you ought to consider that many of us know him a hell of a lot better than you do.
  8. No, there is no "one measure" that tells it all. Look at Drew and how he did with his OPS while he was here: pretty well, but not many people are satisfied with his overall performance here. Still, if there were a single best stat to look at the value of an offensive player, for me, its OPS, and for pitchers, its ERA. Those two stats might only tell half of the story for the player, so other statistics must also be considered. Some of the nonsense out there is just ludicrous: BABIP being one useless statistic that measures simple blind luck. Its amazing to me that some people want to make this relatively simple game something far more complicated than it really is.
  9. No, Theo was not an idiot here; he did not suck in terms of overall performance. His area of success, or at least the area where his management team succeeded, was in developing young players like Pedroia, Lester, and Ellsbury, among others. However, his list of failures in the free agency arena reads like a bad novel. He gets an "F" in this area. Overall, I would grade him a "C". Not a total failure, but not someone I would want as GM for my ML team.
  10. Drew never had more than 78 RBIs in a season. That is simply not good enough. Furthermore, while other guys gutted it out and played or at least tried to play hurt sometimes, Drew refused to do that. I remember one time when he had to be ordered to play by Francona because the team was short of OF (can't remember all the other details, but that stuck in my mind as an example of his softness). I will not miss JD Drew.
  11. Hard to disagree with Elktonnic's theory that in a few years we should expect more compensation from the Cubs in an effort on their part to try to get us to take him back.
  12. I think thats the best solution for now. Don't forget that Ellsbury also has a below average arm in CF for us. Part of the allure of Crawford was his speed and athleticism in the OF. The dimensions of the park the Rays played in suited his defensive style very well. At Fenway he is in LF and not called on to demonstrate his speed out there nearly as often. Essentially, in playing him in LF, we have virtually eliminated one of his most productive qualities in the OF: speed.
  13. Is this a joke? The WAR for Lackey is higher than that for Aceves? If thats true, and I am sure it is, then I can eliminate one additional alphabet soup metric from my vocabulary.
  14. We have no leverage; they have it all. If we stick to our high demands they will hire an interim GM for a year, and then, when Epstein's contract is up and a lot of money is off their books, they get him for free. Furthermore, if they don't get him this year, we do. We get a lame duck GM who doesn't want to be here. Thats why we are taking whatever they are offering.
  15. The money owed Lackey and Soriano are about the same number of dollars, about $50M according to my calculations. This could work. But the idea of swapping OF I do not like. I think an OF needs to play one position except for rare occurrences.
  16. ...the expected agreement will include Cubs minor leaguers, although not top prospects Brett Jackson, Trey McNutt and Matt Szczur, the source said. Cash will not be part of the compensation Like I said, we will be getting a few midlevel prospects for Epstein. The Cubs had all the leverage. Now I hope we can move on and get ourselves a manager with a whip.
  17. 99%? I make that deal in a heartbeat.
  18. No problem at all. The top 10 players are: Albert Pujols, Albert Pujols, Albert Pujols..................and so forth.
  19. If nothing has been resolved by the end of the WS, I agree with you. I do not prefer Cherington, but the main thing is that we cannot have a lame duck GM now. Theo has one year left on his contract. He won't be an effective GM for us this year if he stays. I am wondering why the Cubs don't hire an interim GM for this year and just wait us out for a year until a ton of money comes off their books and Epstein can be had for free.
  20. As with iOrtiz of course it isn't my place to tell you what you should like, so if you like ERA then go for it! Fair enough. And I will. Baseball is a simple game, really. Its just not that complicated. Some of the metrics I have seen are really stretches and seems to have been invented because someone out there thinks the world needs more numbers. If and when my friend Orwell makes it over here he can explain the deficiencies in Bill James's stuff far better than I can as he is a mathmatician by trade and well versed in this area.
