  1. I think we have to give him a chance before passing judgement on him. Lets see if he is able to utilize the full offensive arsenal at his disposal (eg: steals, sacrifice bunts, hit and run etc), shows ingenuity, and is tough in the clubhouse. I am pretty suspicious that he is another yes-man, but Sveum deserves a chance. He will make mistakes, but hopefully it will be mistakes born out of aggressiveness trying to win games. If he fails in these regards then yes, there WILL be bitching.:harhar:
  2. Everyone has the same sentiment, but he is going to be in the back of everyone's mind. If he did pitch injured for most of this year I am sure it affected his performance. So part of the blame has to put on the management for allowing him to go on and on and on being the worst SP in MLB with over 100 IP. They should have removed him once it became clear that he wasn't going to improve. Since he was THE WORST SP in baseball, by definition ANYONE would have been an improvement.
  3. The season is young. My negativity is still in its offseason. Here is the link to the forum I was referring to: http://stfunited.com/ You might find it amusing. Totally vanilla; and totally uninteresting. Everyone waving the pompoms and wearing pink bonnets.
  4. Believe it or not, there actually IS a forum for folks who do not like any negativity whatsoever. Complaining is not tolerated there; all is copacetic. Its totally vanilla. Not for me, for sure, but maybe VA SOXFAN would like it.
  5. Sometimes, yeah. Other times I will suggest some concrete solutions that can be tried. I am sorry that you cannot tolerate any level of "bitching" at all. Thats just the way forums are. If you want a forum without any of that, pm me and I will suggest one.
  6. Lets just call it "the acceptance of mediocrity".
  7. How'd you like the last couple of years?
  8. Renteria. Gagne. Smoltz Penny Cameron
  9. Bard is going to be the closer, at least to start the year. Why pay big bucks for someone else? Bard has earned the chance for a shot at that job. Maybe it will work out; maybe not. I would rather spend the money getting other pieces for a run in a couple of years that for a closer who is likely no better than Bard would be. They are ALL a crapshoot, Rivera being the exception.
  10. Whether or not he was worth the money is a totally subjective judgement. In his case there was both good and bad: good OPS, good defensively, but on the negative side, he never got over 78 RBIs in a season, didn't hit many HRs, was felt by most that he didn't fulfill his potential as a ball player, and was soft and unwilling to play injured. He got paid to play like a top corner OF and IMO failed to do so overall, though in some areas he excelled. As I said, I expected more.
  11. Thats your opinion. For $15M per year I expected more. Remember: that amount began five years ago when it was a relatively larger amount.
  12. With luck the FO will realize that this is not going to be anything but a bridge year. And thats fine with me. Its not going to happen overnight folks. There is just too much deadwood on this team for it to be competitive this year IMO. As for the chronic complaining: ignore it. Its ubiquitous. No one is going to change it.
  13. Bard deserves a shot at closing IMO. He certainly has the stuff to do it with two excellent pitches, a FB and a slider. Others are fine too as long as the money and contract length are right
  14. Also two less than you. Why are you bothering to post at all if all you post is this kind of garbage? Do you have anything cogent to contribute?
  15. Bingo! Its time to start the rebuilding process, and you don't do that with long expensive contracts for relief pitchers. Papelbon would have been a good option for fewer years, but four years at $50M? Thats a mistake I am glad we didn't make. Time to give Bard a chance to prove what he can do.
  16. Two less than you
  17. Hey-no problem this year with the pen. Bard can close. AND JENKS WILL BE THE NEW SETUP MAN...hahahaha
  18. Bard was overused last year. He faded in September because of that. From April 1 to Aug 31 he had an ERA of 2.03 with a BAA of .164 and an OPSa of .497. Superlative stats until he faded. For the same time period Papelbon had an ERA of 2.80, BAA of 202, and an OPSa of .537. Bard pitched in more games that Papelbon did and got burned out IMO. I think he will do just fine as long as Dave Martinez doesn't overuse him this year.....OOPS! We haven't hired Martinez YET.
  19. Yeah, but they overpaid for it. The ONLY way this deal is worth it is if Papelbon keeps putting up Rivera-like numbers for four more years. So far Rivera has a career ERA/WHIP of 2.21/1.00, and Papelbon is similar at 2.33/1.02. Rivera is one of the very few consistently excellent relievers in the history of the game. Most peak and its followed by inconsistent performances. For that money I would not want to see the Red Sox sign him. Bard will do fine.
