  1. I'm glad that we aren't getting those accusations. What do you suppose the deal has been wherever Hanley has been? You think that everything has just been made up? Everybody just out to get Hanley? I'm ok with you tooting the flute of optimism here believe me but Hanley's play this year has a great bering methinks on the 92 win season. I'm not particularly comfortable with that.
  2. That fat bastard needs a dose of Jethro's factorin. give me a few of them double oughts.
  3. Good to see Moncada, Vasquez, and Barnes already south getting ready for the spring.
  4. I wonder if that could really mean that he has lost 10 pounds which would put him within the 10 pound margin of error?
  5. My factorin might not be that good, but they way I got it figured there is a 20 game margin of error there. Fairly safe bet!
  6. I hear you here and I think that we all should stay optimistic. Realistic perhaps just a maybe but optimistic yes. Wherever he has been rumors about his attitude and work ethic have come out. My opinion is that we would be better off without him. I hope that he can prove all of his detractors wrong. It is pretty much up to him I think.
  7. they might choose to use the best pitcher regardless of the options. My bet once again going forward is Johnson. My bias(and I am not being a wiseass here) says that he would be as good an option as Kelly and that he is ahead of both Wright and Owens. He very well might become that middle of the rotation guy that we need. Wait - we already have one of those in Porcello. All kidding aside, I see Buccholz and Kelly much as I do Sandoval and Ramirez. Potential, Potential, etc. etc. the back up plans might wind up being the best plans that we have after all.
  8. I think that Wright will definitely figure into the season plan. I also think that a healthy Brian Johnson becomes a full time starting as in the rotation pitcher for the Sox if not someone else this year.
  9. All of the projections are great to see. I enjoy them. A little too much like the stock market for me to place much real faith in any specific projections. It is usually the people who claim to have all of the data compiled just the right way that I tend to shy away from. We all probably want to believe that the Red sox are one of the top 2 teams potentially in all of baseball. Sounds great but once again the games have to be played before I am going to get to excited. I think that we wil be better for sure but a 90 + win season will depend on just about everything going right for us. Starting pitching - Hanley Ramirez- third base - catching - outfield hitting - will Pedroia stay healthy? If things don't go well early, I really will be curious to see how long it will take for them to make the necessary adjustments. If they don't wait long, maybe even eat some contract $, I think that they yard a better team out onto the field later in the season than they do in the spring.
  10. And the good thing about it is that we get to believe what we want to believe. I have not heard anything at all about Sandoval being a bad teammate. A fat slob in decline yes but not a bad teammate. As for Hanley, everywhere he has been there have been "rumors". Once again, I will say that this is a huge year for Hanley Ramirez. Obviously there is a lot of negative sentiment out there about him still being in Boston. He is talented enough for sure. If he views this year as an opportunity as opposed to a negative situation that he has gotten himself into, things could go well. The Red Sox will be fine whether he is there or not. Sadly I think there is as much potential for him to hurt us this year as there is for him to help us.
  11. This is a tough one. In general, I agree - all things being fairly equal - best arm in right at Fenway. Lynn covered a tremendous amount of ground in cf and Evans was just one of the best I have ever seen. I would be very happy with Betts in center and JBJ in right but in all honesty I think that I am happier with JBJ as the everyday center fielder I think. Great problem to have.
  12. I agree with much of what you have said. But, if you know for a fact that Hanley Ramirez causes no clubhouse problems and is not lazy, I would like to know where you get your information. Normally where there is smoke there is fire. I hope that you are right about him. If you have some inside info about this one, I think that we would all be happy. I guess rumors have just followed Hanley for most of his career.
  13. We do disagree. I'm ok with that.
  14. There are a few benefits. Keeps a few people employed and serves to piss off players like Pedroia who really could give a crap about what any of the projections say about how he might or might not perform. A motivated Pedroia is good for us so I hope that he keeps hearing about how he is clearly entering the twilight of his career. Also - even though I am pretty sure that it isn't going to happen - I would be curious to see how Sandoval's overall play would be affeected by his 2 adays as well as a big time weight loss. He might actually present a pleasant surprise as well. You have to think that his weight gain has been at least a little responsible for his downward spiral.
  15. You're right here. Interesting part is that everybody has a theory as to why he wanted to up the K total. Most people seem to want to blame the coaching staff. Porcello is a big boy. He gets most of the blame from me. Hope he settles in and does what he is capable of doing without trying to do any more.
  16. I like to see if the projections agree with my own. They are just pretty much entertainment for me. Just like all of the projected stats. I'm not in a position to have to use them and I'm glad of that. Box scores really are just as much fun for me. I want to watch the games, follow my favorites, and in general be entertained.
  17. We all need to be optimistic I think when talking Hanley Ramirez. If he cannot play first base, I would be very surprised if he stays a part of this team with respect to using him as a dh next year. Unless he is injured, I don't think that keeping him around - pinch hitting and occasionally dhing will work at all. IMO that would be a definite recipe for major team issues. They have the players to get by perfectly well and maybe even better without him. Even though nothing is being really said about what happens if this next experiment does not work, I am betting that a lot of people are at least thinking about what the next step would be. Hope he can at least play an adequate first base. He should be able to. I think that it is up to him.
  18. Wouldn't try that one. Normally you get what you pay for. In Porcello's case, not so much. He may still be a very important piece but I am glad somebody else is paying him.
  19. Just listened to an interview with the current third baseman MVP (not a Red Sox). His comments about Price work for me. Sounds like the kind of player and teammate that any team would love to have. Price is over paid but aren't they all. If you are going to overpay, it makes a lot of sense to me to overpay for the best. This is the kind of player that we have needed. A lot of money- yes- but still a common sense sign if you can afford him.
  20. All I can think of here, is that they feel that they still have a pretty good backup plan. Shaw can play first or third and nobody really knows what he can do over the long haul in Boston. I also kind of thought that we would see one more guy added to the rotation but right now it doesn't look that way. I don't think that replacing Ramirez whether in the field or at the plate is the big issue. It is what do you do with him if he can't play first base? That could create a big problem. This is a Hanley Ramirez opportunity. If he is working and putting in the time it takes to actually learn how to play the position, great. If he isn't and he can't get it done, I feel bad for him because it could be a career ender. I would not be at all surprised to see Sam Travis at first base for Boston before the season is over.
  21. As much as I would love to see them add another starter, what Ramirez does or doesn't do has a tremendous amount of significance. If he can't play that position, I still think they are set up to compete but the question of what do you do with him could get very interesting. I don't see him getting shelved until Ortiz retires. You have to hope that he can do the job. He should be able to.
  22. Interesting - No doubt about the fact that Ramirez's ability to play first base is huge. Not a lot in that projection overall to be negative about. Hanley's play this year will play a major role. Mystery!
  23. Is this suggesting that they might be numbskulls?
  24. Hey- I can deal with old age - traditional - old school but don't be calling me any kind of moron. Seriously though, do you think the cheese could ever slide off the cracker of one of those saber metric folks?
  25. I shudder to think where that Bill James book would be found.
