  1. I think I understand what you are saying. In a perfect world, Vazquez doesn't get near that play. Workman to first following his throw. Moreland to Pedroia - Moreland follows that throw to second - Pedroia's forces Hamilton back to first - ether tags him out or should have been thrown to Workman who tags him out. Never more than 3 necessary to complete any rundown. If Vazquez went after that bad throw, one of those other knuckleheads (only said affectionately) should have had a clue and headed toward the plate. Which one? I don't care - Protocol says maybe the pitcher I guess - I would have thought though that maybe a guy with Pedroia's experience would have seen that one developing and headed toward the plate. Kind of a humorous play to develop and I'm not sure that anyone other than Pedroia gets blamed much here. I would not call that a series of mental mistakes. I would call that one an error on Pedroia and that's it. Sometimes things just happen. Farrell is off the hook on that one.
  2. I didn't really mean for my post to sound unfriendly Max. My OCD sends me on my way some times.
  3. I like your post here Max. Sale to me is a great example of a great pitcher who I knew very little about other than the fact that he could pitch when he came to Boston. I think he represents what every team wishes they had more of - Winner. I think that you are right about betts and I think Kimbrel has many of the same qualities that Sale has. They are big time team players who want to win.
  4. Sorry Max - great play Mookie - The discussion I was involved in had something to do with what I really care about - fundamental baseball. The execution on the rundown up until the ball left Pedroia's hand was fine. If Pedroia had executed the play correctly he would have tagged Hamilton out while forcing him back to first. 3 guys in the rundown (in this case you had your ss at second just in case). Pedroia screwed it up but the plate should still have been covered. The play Mookie scored on was a great play by Mookie coupled with a bad throw to first. hamilton has great speed but he took advantage I'm afraid of some pretty piss poor fundamental baseball. It is good to talk real bb stuff sometimes too.
  5. Thank you for this piece of info Moon. I compiling my most important useful statistical data list and this one has to be up near the top. We just need a 3 letter abbreviation to identify it.
  6. You are right. This particular play was a little different. I'm thinking that with a runner on first base, Vazquez needs to see what is in front of him and becomes a traffic cop. There should have been some communication between the pitcher and the catcher on this one. On the pickoff, Workman really should have been the third guy invollved in that rundown. 3 guys should be all you need. 2 throws all you need. It was poor execution by all of them but I'm still thinking that Vazquez needed to be the guy at the plate. I hope they are talking about this one today.
  7. Speaking of Porcello - it was great what he did for us last year but I think that this might be closer to who he really is. A good solid mid rotation kind of guy. In all honesty, I don't think that there really is much difference between him and Fister. Sale - not ours Pomeranz - not ours E-Rod - not ours Price - not ours Porcello - not ours Fister - not ours We've done a pretty good job of amassing players that we did not develop I'd say. No impending cliff.
  8. Regardless of how they do in the playoffs, I think that this team has over achieved greatly. I say that but I also think that they have done it by playing the game the way I like to see it played. They have played with heart, with courage, with grit. The have come through in so many "clutch" situations that it is almost unbelievable. They have contributions from too many players to give credit to. They would be the last team that I would want to play if I was the manager of an opposing team. They could go out early but they could also go all the way. As much as I believe in balance if it boiled down to an either or - strengthening an already good pitching staff or somehow signing Stanton long term, I would go with pitching all day. Historically we have been able to develop our big hitters from within. Not so much with our pitchers.
  9. I was very upset that Shaw was traded. Bit the bullet thinking that Thornburg was going to be key in a relief role and that Sandoval would at least be able to stay afloat at third. Obviously it is behind us now and the hind sighting ******** that gets done here does no good at all. I never expected to see Devers with us this year. Now that he is i'm very glad that he is. I'm still thinking that he will be our third baseman for some time.
  10. 0 quit in these boys. After things started happening late, did you really ever doubt them getting it done. Not me!
  11. Nope - not really questioning the move with respect to either party. Personally if Pomeranz becomes that solid #2 or maybe even the 1- that he might become, it would not matter to me what anyone thought of the trade. I truly hope that Espinoza becomes that guy although I would not bet on him doing it. This trade made sense for us when it was done and if Pomeranz is resigned and continues to pitch at the level he is at, it would continue to make great sense going forward. This was win for the Red Sox the day the ink dried on the minor details.
  12. There is no doubt about the fact that Espi could become the pitcher many have suggested that he might. The point that I am trying to make is that no one knows what the end game for Pomeranz might be. Quite a few people have thrown out guesses based on what he has done over the past couple of years. I don't think that they know. I really think that there is chance maybe even a good chance that his best years are ahead of him.
  13. I'm somewhat of a Hanley convert myself. I hope that he can come through for us as well as for himself. I saw him in Portland and am pretty sure that we at least sort of know why he was traded in spite of the awesome potential that he had. He has matured. He seems very solid to me. We need the throw back Hanley! Let's go.
  14. The latest interview with Pomeranz pretty much sums up how I feel about this big kid. He quite clearly is happy to be here and in no way does he think that we have seen the best of him. he has some solid personal performance goals for the future and I hope we get a chance to see him develop as he moves along. The potential for this pitching staff to be about as good as there is is right there. I would keep as many of them together as I possibly could.
  15. I think that the arguement to not send him back out there for the 8th is valid for sure. Didn't bother me much that he went back out but I think the sensible decision would have been to keep him in the dugout after 7.
  16. Just a question - don't read anything else into it. Are you suggesting that allowing Sale to pitch 6 or 7 innings might have been acceptable but allowing him to go back out there for one more was not?
  17. Now wait - we need to end this little arguement now I think . Never have I said that I think that Sale should have gone back out there just to get to number 300. That was going to come regardless. If I had been the manager I would have yanked him at the end of 7. My primary point is pretty much that if anyone thinks that an obviously heathy and still obviously strong Chris Sale was risking injury and future fatigue if we did get to the playoffs , I'm thinking that they are wrong and are being just a bit overly cautious. Let's just see how it plays out ok. I won't be the one playing the hindsight game. I think that this team will over achieve if they make the playoffs. Suggesting that I might not get your point sort of suggests that you might be condescending just a bit. We have done this dance before.
  18. I clearly get your point. It is a good point. I just don't necessarily agree with you.
  19. trust me on this - you are wrong - I get your point!
  20. I'm thinking that there was more than one conversation with JF and Mr. Sale before he came out of that dugout in both the 7th and 8th innings. I'm just thinking that I have criticized JF numerous times for putting out what I thought were very weak lineups in an effort to rest guys. It is his history. He never has been a manager who has taken many risks at all when it comes to players and their rest and health in general. The spots on that old leopard aren't changing folks. I'm sure that sending Sale back out there wasn't an easy decision. It is over. A 99 mph fastball in the 8th! I think that he was ok.
  21. What it suggests to me really is that we have a team that is getting just about as much bang for their buck as they can get. A few twists and turns and we could be behind the Yankess right now and not up by 3. We are good but not good enough to take anything for granted. If resting to some here means getting Sale out of there after 6 or 7, I get that, but having him skip starts right now if he feels strong and ready to go would be something I wouldn't understand. I'm willing to bet that if you took a little poll that everyone of the members of this team would feel the same way. JF has for the most part always erred on the cautious side. I'm pleased that he understands that it is important to win the division.
  22. With that kind of statistical support, why don't we just forfeit a game or two and give everybody some much needed rest. I do love me some of them stats.
  23. No can do. Too many stats a day might befuddle me. Besides I still haven't gotten past you opening up the series for us tomorrow in Cincy. You give us those 5 scoreless innings thats all I want. lol
  24. Nolan Ryan pounding the crap out of whoever that guy was is still my favorite.
  25. Based on how lights out that bullpen has been, I think that you bring up a good point. I kept waiting and watching to see if he was done even after 6. Because he had to wait a little longer than he had between innings, I thought that he was done after 7. You could see him in the dugout- didn't put his hat on right away and he didn't get right up and out early. I actually thought that he was done. Maddox was ready to go. I'm glad that it worked out. It was the first game this season that my wife actually stayed up to see through to its' end. When I mention the word sale to her, I don't think that it conjures up an image of Chris Sale!
