    JBJ is the best we got out there right now. He should be out there right now. He wouldn't be my choice as the best cf that we have ever had but he is the best we have right now. He is a very good fielder if you believe your eyes which I do. Lately his talents as well as his significance to this team's success are being blown out of proportion. If he doesn't hit, at some point in time he is going to be replaced. He would not bring back squat in a trade right now because he is such a streaky hitter. I'll enjoy him while we have him but I won't elevate him to some heroic figure out there.

    An achilles tear would likely have been season ending but a cracked bone in the ankle possibly just 10 days? This is a guy who yes I would hate to see rushed back at all. it really looks as those he is poised for a super year. Here's hoping that Lin can get it done in the field. I think that he can.

    If I thought that it was an either or situation, Hanley would be gone in one of those New York minutes we hear about. Kimbrel is far more valuable to this team than Hanley . Doesn't work like that for me simply because I don't see it as an either or situation. If John Henry said that in 2019 we could have one or the other and asked all Red Sox fans to vote, does anyone truly think that it would be close?

    I didn't really think that you did and I appreciate you saying as much. You did give me a chance to express my opinion which probably has a lot more to do with gathering information to make decisions as opposed to who should be in cf for us right now.

    I would never disagree with the comment that he is the best we have nor would I disagree about him being damned good out there. I like him too but if you believe what the analytics show and you still don't think that he is replaceable then I guess I don't know what to say. Since he is currently on our team, he definitely should be in centerfield but based on analytical information he sure and hell looks replaceable. that is all I got. this discussion for me really has little to do with JBJ being our center fielder right now.

    If that is how you are able to interpret data, then what exactly are the rules? You are telling me that the 12 guys who are ranked ahead of JBJ are all gold glove worthy? You see where I am going with this I bet.

    That's because you have yet to be poisoned by the "seek and you shall find" analytical data to suit your needs. It clearly has been proven by the data that he a slightly above average center fielder and we all know that he can't hit. lol

    And for me there you have it. My eyes tell me folks that JBJ is one helluva centerfielder but the numbers don't lie as I have repeatedly been told. We have some people here who are big time into the analytics and will never allow a moment to pass when they can question any "old school" method of evaluating talent. Many of them seem to think that JBJ is the guy we have to have out there in cf. If you truly believe that then thanks for the validation. All methods of evaluating talent are necessary and possibly equal in importance I guess. It seems to me that the people into quantifying everything are proving that jbj is really not that necessary unless he hits.

    yes - I was talking about pitches per starts. I'm not opposed to pitch counts. Anything that you do to try to keep pitchers healthy.

    I didn't think that you were being sarcastic. If I come off as sounding that way with you, trust me I'm not meaning to be. We do have a group of people here who I think are able to debate, disagree and still be civil to one another. I think that that is the way it should be.

    My guess and it is just a guess is that limiting pitchers to throwing 10 to 15 pitches per start and staying with the regular rotation starts will not give them the rest that they need. I would think that going every 6th day or periodically skipping starts makes sense.

    What, we won in those years? I take everything I said bacK. I'm a historian of sorts but I'm a proud believer in the theory of what have you done for me lately as well. Pretty soon Moon they will have to enlarge those dugouts to accommodate all of the analytic guys and gals. Cora's head might explode.

    I was talking about his skills not the person. I believe exactly what you believe - defense up the middle is vital and we do need that good fielding centerfielder at present - made more obvious by what is so going on around second and short. I get your point. At some point in his career though, if he doesn't hit and he wants a contract that seems a little high, I think that JBJ is certainly replaceable. At the present time of course we need the guy. I'm not advocating to dump him now but I don't see him as being vital to this team's success either.

    It certainly seems as though if you pick the right years necessary to prove your point, anything can be quantified can't it. Obviously the players who play, the coaches who coach, and the old fans who still believe that better teams tend to be more successful in close contests than their lesser opponents just don't get it. lol - too stubborn to change our thinking I guess. I wonder if it is still ok for us to believe and maybe even talk about such things? A little sarcasm there but just trying to add a little humor.

    Hoping to hear from the analytic folk on this one. We all realize that resting pitchers is important. What do you think - Is it better to give that starter an extra day off or maybe even totally skip a start as opposed to say limiting pitch counts from maybe 110-115 down to lets say 90-95? I'm leaning toward the extra day or maybe even skipping starts. 6 man rotation if you have the men? Has a study already been done?

    Well, I'm not going to quote anybody and once again I'm satisfied with him out there - I think that he is damn good. What confuses me is that when our illustrious analytic experts seem to say that he isn't at the top of his class so to speak. I certainly don't know who he would be replaceable by but if he isn't at the very top of the fielding list, sorry but at some point in his career I could certainly see him being moved. I think that he is a very good center fielder but some have indicated that his defense although good is surpassed by others. Kind of messes with my (I really don't care too much about what the analytics say about him) mind.

    SS - the way our team is currently constructed, there is no question in my mind that JBJ is the guy we want in centerfield. I 'm actually very content with him out there if the team hits but I think that I am missing something because I don't see his skill set as being non-replaceable. If he stays in Boston, I'm fine with that but if somewhere down the road the decision was made to trade him for an overall all upgrade, I'd be fine with that too.

    I like JBJ and don't want him to be traded. Need to get that out of the way. But - Do people really not think that what he brings to us is replaceable? He is a very good center fielder for sure but is he so good that he would not be replaceable? Sale - Price (if healthy)- Kimbrel- Betts - Devers - probably Bogaerts. I am not trying to argue with anyone - I like the guy once again - but what about him am I missing here?
